Ok, I had a shower (used conditioner, no shampoo) about 3 hours ago, and let it air dry. I then took this picture, and it looks like my head is surrounded in a wiry birdsnest. Should I be alarmed? Are my dreams of growing it out shattered? What can I do?
thanks,
donjuan
No need to worry. Your hair looks perfectly healthy. Being in the Awkward Stage now will make you hair go wild for a bit, but in the end all settles down and will look great. This happens to every one of us.
no, that's not what I meant; I understand my hair is wavy. But I am worrying about the single stray hairs that seem to be always hovering above the normal hair mass. I was reading here: http://ca.essortment.com/splitendshair_rili.htm
and wonder if the loose 'haystack' hair (as they call it) is what i have.
I think you are just heavy in the "awkward stage"........nothing to do but wait.
(And rember, practice great hair care early to avoid future problems)
Looking great

These are "new growth" hairs which are always part of the normal process of how hair grows. As some fall out from old age, new growth is always continuing to make up for the loss.
In my honest opinion , Your hair looks great. I noticed a few split-ends but nothing severe. I highly recommend that you hang in there. Split-ends shouldn't restrain you from growing your hair to the length you desire. Some agree that trimming monthly is healthy and others disagree. I personally wouldn't recommend it. mind you , it is somewhat beneficial and keeps hair looking neater. I think you should trim the ends once you achieve your goal length. The reason for my opinion is simple ....Trimming only prolongs the growth process and that is a fact. Try some Gel or maybe some sort of natural oil. Hope this helps&Good luck!
Thank you very much for your quick responses! I think I'll buy myself a wide toothed comb.
Well, I was afraid that the 'fly away' single strands you see are those "split end hairs that split all the way from tip to root" I keep hearing about on hairstyling websites. Do you think this is the case with me? If so, won't those weakened strands continue to look bad no matter what I do (snip ends, etc.)?
thanks
The appearance of damage is an illusion generated by the awkward stage of growth. You're fine.
Thats fine, take it from another 'wild' haired person!!
Looks like you need to comb it.

Looks familiar. That's what mine looked like when my wife started telling me it looked bad. As much as you hear about not combing/brushing, sometimes you just gotta! That fly-away stuff will settle down with time. Definitely not haystack hair! Don't worry, and don't think so hard about it. Growing hair is one of the most natural things you can do! It mostly takes care of itself. You're doin' great!
You're hair looks very healthy. As it gets longer, you may find it helpful to run a wide-toothed comb through it while you are in the shower and have conditioner in it. This will get out any tangles. Be gentle with it while washing and conditioning -- hair is not strong when wet.
I don't see any split ends...even if you have some, don't worry:we ALL have 'em.keep it frowing!!
Your hair looks very healthy.
Good luck!
Hi Don Juan,
don't let anyone tell you that there's a problem - your hair looks fine!
You're doing the right thing, avoiding shampoo and using conditioner instead. In addition, you can try any kind of "anti-frizz" gel, the clear oily fluid consisting of dimethicone plus cyclomethicone and not much else.
By all means, keep it growing, and avoid trims!
