Is it a good idea to keep the hair in the back trimmed more until the sides and top grow out a good bit? I really don't want to have people thinking I'm trying to grow a mullet. :)
Nah, just let it grow, dude. The stuff in the back is what gives you the end of your "length" - makes your ponytail or mane look its most awesome later. Also, length over your ears is more noticeable than in other places, so that area is going to look overdone rather than the other way around (the mullet look) anyhow.
I second that. Just let it grow.
third it. also if you grow it all the same length and have blond hair(mines brown) you look like the young Hanson. Thats a bad thing to me. Other people might like that look, but I don't.
Fourth it. I'm sorta lucky, in that I also have brown hair, so it won't look that way. It's also somewhat wavy, so it'll look much thicker than just straight hair.
Well I'm gonna go against the grain here and disagree. Unless you have the "perfect" hairline I have seen on some blonds, it starts looking messy, especially if you have a hairline like me where there's a big chunk of hair at the nape that forms a ducktail when it gets to be around 2 inches or so. Also the sides in front of your ear can get to looking quite janky. The solution is to get a little cut off at the back and sides or do what I do and trim your nape every few weeks with a electric trimmer, and maybe the sides too if you want. Once your hair in back is 2 inches or so, you dont even need to worry about keeping up with this, because the hair above where you trim some off will cover the curls or the ducktail, since it will be 2 inches longer than it, and will be combed down over it. Problem solved, looks nice and neat. If you plan on wearing your hair in a pony tail, let the offending hair grow again after it is no longer visible so that you can put it in the tail. It wont matter that its an inch or two shorter than the rest of the back, since the back is the first hair you can put in the tail.
well...
When i first started to grow my hair out, i had it long on top, and short on the sides. I started to let it grow, and it all eventully fell into place. But you should Let it grow, and see if it needs to be altered later... If you have to get it trimmed to look right, thats ok, just as long as YOU like it.
What you did is what I consider to be ideal, in an earlier post I recommended 2-3 inches longer on top than the back and sides before you stop getting it cut. That looks so much better (if you have hair that lays down) than growing out a buzz. My nape always needs altering.
