Hello all, Just had a question about terminal length. Does terminal mean that that's how long your hair can grow on its own or does it mean that's how long it's going to grow before you decide that that's the length you want it and keep it cut at that length? Long sentence but curious about everyone's definition of "terminal length".
Terminal length means your hair has attained its utmost length. Genetics determine how long one can grow it till it stops. Some people reach terminal length just below the shoulders! I hope I'm not one of them..:-) Hope this helps.
As Chris said, basically it's as long as it will grow. Some lucky guys, (Absalom, Ed G.) are blessed with terminal length hair past their butt, while others will never be able to grow much past shoulders, it's all genetics! Hope I am one of the lucky ones!

"Terminal length" is best understood by considering your eyebrows and your fingernails.
All hair on the human body has a terminal length, not just your mane hair. For eyebrow hair it's about an inch. You can't grow three inch long eyebrows because the individual hairs don't live long enough to do that. You can have eyebrows with hairs just 1/4 inch long though if you cut them often enough.
Fingernails do not have a terminal length. They will keep growing until the day you die if you never trim them or do anything to cause them to break off. Avoiding "things that cause them to break off" is a tough job though. The physical environment causes all materials to eventually suffer fatigue, and if fatigue causes a growing structure to fail before it reaches its terminal length, this "fatigue length" is as long as it will get.
If you provide a harsh environment for your mane, it may reach its fatigue length before it reaches its terminal length. The main evidence of this is split ends. Take care of your mane, and its strands will reach terminal length. That is as long as they will get. You can't grow them longer, any more than you can grow foot-long eyebrows.

fingernails continue growing for a short time even after you die,so I've heard :P
...Nails don't grow. I heard that it's the skin that retracts, that's all. Bacteria will continue to live but that's not your body
Your hair (everything above the scalp) is already dead but on some people
it looks so alive and healthy!
If a cell phone rings in the forest and its owner is dead, does it make a sound?
Thanks guys for the info. All the men in my family kept their hair short(above the ears), so I'm not sure what my terminal length will be. Pretty excited waiting. The back's down to my collar right now. It was a couple of inches long back in September when I decided to let it grow. Since then it's grown about an inch and a half. Right on track. Thanks again and Happy Holidays!!! Mike
