i was just wondering if there is a negative side to getting hair thinned?

Hi Jack,
I'd say, DON't thin. Post a picture if you feel comfortable doing so and ask how it would look if it were thinner. In any case, give yourself a LOT of time before you do anything irreversible.
Thinning means randomly shortening lots of hairs so that the long hairs only look thin and much less spectacular in the end. Thinning also promotes fly-aways, unruliness, and other problems. If you have thick long hair, I'd say, by all means, keep it that way. Certainly, thinning your hair does not make it grow thicker.
Often, the effect of thinning cause much frustration so that people later decided to hack it shorter in order to "undo" the thinning, got even more frustrated, buzzed it all off, and were STILL unhappy, because the "underlying issue" was a lack of self-acceptance and appropriate self-love. - Of course, I have NO way of saying that that applied to you, please don't be offended. Ultimately, only you can determine yourself what's right for you.
By the way, is there a girl friend who wants to talk you into "thinning" your hair? Hope no-one has been feeding you toxic lines all the time, these lines sometimes have delayed effects on our psyche, including a phenomenon called "delayed compliance".
I think it's normal for long-hairs to be frustrated from time to time. Again, it's best to wait a long time before doing anything irreversible and drastic - that should be several months if you have had long hair "for ages", because it's probably part of your identity. What if you simply let your hair do its thing for a few months, don't even think of it, or, better, simply decide to accept that your body grows this kind of hair in this way - and post again in another while?
By all means, take your time to make a decision, and make sure it's really YOURS.
All the best to you, whatever you decide.
