A while back I was talking about MPB. I promised that I would post a pic of the back of my hair, head, whatever it is. Well, about 2 1/2 years ago my hair was thinning considerably at the crown. Now even if I part my hair it looks ok. Also, my hair use to be about 50% gray and I have pics to prove it. I use no coloring agent, however, I do eat a good diet now, actually, too much and I take zinc which seems to keep my hair a darker color. Coal tar shampoo will also help to keep hair darker. The only time my hair looks thin is when it is wet. My conclusion is that DHT inhibitors like Propecia and Avodart do work in the majority of cases, however, for how long only time will tell. So far, so good. My present hair length has taken about 2 1/2 years from a 1" taper cut.
Hi Jeffrey,
Superb, is all I can say!!!!! I see NO sign of crown thinning here! I want Avodart NOW!!! Your hair is WAY longer than mine and I have been growing longer, you also appear to have nice long crown hairs! I don't know if you saw my update on my doctor's visit but he did suggest I have early signs of MPB, unfortunately, the wait to see a specialist is 6 months, I hate waiting that long to get on propecia or avodart, especially after seeing your hair. Do you have a goal length?
Keep it growing,
David
Another question I forgot to ask. Do you really think I should risk the 6 month wait, or should I attempt to get the prescription from my family doctor and forget about the specialist? I frankly don't know how much hair I might lose in those 6 months.
Thanks for any help,
David
Hi there!
Well, first of all thanks for the kind words. Six months seems like a very long time to wait. If your family Doctor thinks you have early signs of MPB then I would opt for the Propecia, if that's ok with him. Propecia has a very good safety profile. Remember that propecia is considerably less expensive than Avodart. The only difference is that Avodart inhibits both type 1 and type 2, 5~Alpha reductase enzyme, whereas Propecia inhibits only one enzyme. It seems that inhibiting DHT to any significant degree greatly slows MPB. Keep in mind that what is generally expected from these drugs is to slow MPB and not necessarily stop it altogether. If a man is over 30 or so, then he is not likely to experience rapid balding, that usually happens in a man's 20s and that's what you and I have going for us, since we are past that age. There are three direct factors that contribute to MPB, androgens, age, and follicles that are genetically susceptible to the effects of androgens. Stress can accelerate hair-loss, as can certain medications. Keep us posted and try not to worry too much about it. I doubt that your hair will make any sudden changes any time in the near future. Well, I'm off again for a few days. Bye for now.
Hi again Jeffrey,
You may already have left, but I was wondering if you have any "before" pictures, showing the crown area before you started taking Avodart? It would be great to see the before/after comparison! It appears it may have REVERSED the MPB in your case, as you now appear to have a healthy head of hair with no sign of MPB! I was also wondering if you plan to grow it significantly longer?
David
Hi Jeffrey,
whatever you are doing with your hair, it works, and the result looks great, including the color! This length makes many of us envious already ... :-)
Happy growth forever!
