I want to start growing my hair long. How do I let it start growing? Should I let the top grow even with the bottom first? And what is the best way to let it start growing, I don't want it to look bad. Any information would help.
Is it all the same length right now? If so, what you can do is either let the top grow even with the bottom first, or just grow it out. You'll still go through the awkward stage, but, it'll grow out and get to how it should be.

I have some hair in the back (enough to catch most of it and
make a micro-pony tail of ~3 inches.) Elsewhere, on the top, front
and sides, it is about 2 inches. Are there any precautions/steps
I can take in my process of growing hair ? What is a maintanence
cut ?

Okay, so where I started in February. I'd just let it grow. Maybe stop using shampoo so often (go to once every 3-4 days and use warm water to rinse the hair between). That will help it become more controllable when you hit the awkward stage (which I'm officially in). A maintenance cut, from what I gather, is when they take off the split ends and trim the back so it grows more evenly. I will probably have one done once I've had about a months growth over what I want to have before everything is fully grown (basically want my ponytail to be 10" again - currently is about 7.5-8"). After getting everything evened out so I have a very thick 10" ponytail that contains every strand of hair, I'll then grow it another 6-8 inches to my final preferred length.

Thx for the tips. The problem is, my hair is CURLY. so already at this
stage where my top hair is about 2+ inches long, it looks a bit
bulky. Considering that I have a long way to go, can I put some
thing on the head to keep the hair down...I was thinking applying
one of them hair gels on wet hair and combing it down AND hope for
the best...
Also, how long is a typical bad hair phase ? I need to
mentally prepare myself if I am going thru with this...!

Lasts typically between month 2 and month ponytail (anywhere between month 9 or 16, depending on how fast your hair grows).
That should work... I have pretty thick hair myself that tends to get bulky when washed. If I let it go a few days between washings and just rinse it with water, it lays down pretty nicely.
Depends on your hair growth rate. In my case, since I have been using Biotin and the Fo-Ti, and have witnessed about a 1.3-1.6" a month growth rate, I've another 2-3 months before the hair at the front is long enough to reach a ponytail tie - probably another 3-4 months before it'll be long enough to blend in with a normal ponytail. If you're just doing it naturally, then it'll be more like 9-16 months...
