I'm just getting frustated. My hair seems to be taking forever although yes it's growing, and fairly straight so I'm thankful. Still, how do you weather these long, boring awkward phase days? My hair is dull, huge and hideous, and it takes lots of brushing and hairspray to look decent.

I know how you feel. I have very thick hair, so as it grows out it seems to be huge and wants to just "poof out" more than anything else. Around the house, I usually don't do much. But if I'm going out, I always wear a hat (even when I have my hair buzzed), so I just tug it down snug to cover the mess up. If I get hair sticking out above my ears (my dad and I call it "Captain America wings" lol!!), I just tuck it up under my hat. The back will still show and sometimes look a bit askew, but some brief combing and maybe a slight wetdown seems to do the trick. :) That's how I deal with my mess of a hair when it grows out.
I recommend going for a hat, that´s what I do. Though you can´t use them at work or in school. :/
Hats weren't allowed at my middle school, but that was fine because I hadn't gotten self-conscious about my hair yet. That happened in high school, and I wore a hat for all four years and during college, too. And occasionally you can find a job where hats are allowed. Just the other day at Target I saw several male employees wearing biege Target hats. Just one of the reasons I keep trying to apply there more than any other place. I keep telling my mom, "If only I could just find a job in a warehouse moving boxes, nobody would care what I looked like." Haha!!
In the words of Tom Petty, you've got to have "Rhino Skin!" There are some things we can control (kind of) like wearing a hat or using gel (sparingly) but the 1 thing we cannot control is TIME. In the end, that's what it takes, and lots of it. So, be tough brother and you'll get through it...we all have or will. Peace - Bruce'ster
My favorite thing to do on bad days it to wear a beanie. They don't constrict your head too much and they look pretty cool. They are the best kind of hats for long/ish hair in my opinion. I had a friend in high school that wore one all the time.. I had no idea he was growing his hair out until after he already passed the awkward stage :P. But of course school and work sometimes have hat policies. But theres another option for you. good luck!
