my hair is about 4 inches long at the moment, too short to part it down the middle i think. instead, my hair is just a bit of a top-heavy mess. it's starting to grow down but it's still very top-heavy; its very thick and straight. i eventually want it to look like this

my mum says i should get it 'thinned out', without taking any real length off, but i'm very confused about everything to do with my hair. do you agree? if anyone could give me any tips on how to achieve this overall look i would be very grateful. thankyou for your time.
The look you are talking about shouldn't be any problem at all. If you are at 4" now, then DON'T CUT IT for about 8 more months and presto! You're there. If you trim your hair then it could realistically take you years to get there. You shouldn't develop any significant split ends in acheiving the length in the photo, therefore, you will need no trims, furthermore, you can do without the trims anyway if you take good care of your hair. Good luck and don't cut.
dont get it thinned. i dont think that is a good idea.My mom also tried to get me to thin my hair.I'm glad i did'nt, it would be VERY thin now if i had done it.

I dont even know why thinning shears were invented... I suspect its for girls who wants to feather their bangs to suit whatever style they might be after. Do not thin hair because it will damage existing hair and it will also make your hair look like crap then you will want to cut it. I think alot of parents tells you to thin with the intention that you will want to cut later on. Do not underestimate the power of people with long term goals in mind!
Thinning = cutting! Don't fall for it, and you'll be fine.

If it aint broke dont fix it! Just leave it alone. it will even itself out with time. stay the heck away from the evil invention called scissors. treat it with extra care and thats about it! good luck to you
You are going through the "awkward phase" right now. Don't thin the hair, it will make the awkward phase last that much longer, and you will want all the thickness you can get when the hair is longer.

thanks for all your help people, i really appreciate it. does anyone know ways in which i can achieve the texture in the picture aside from the length? my hair is very thick and straight. at the moment i don't use conditioner (!) because it makes my hair go too straight which looks weird at the back and gives it no depth, which i rely on at the moment as my hair is not too long. can anybody help?
