I made a post about getting my hair thinned out b/c of it's extreme thickness and the fact that I can't brush it anymore without it hurting plus my straightening iron won't straighten it anymore. If I get it thinned out by my hairstylist, who understands what I want; will this affect my length? Thanks.
Carlos,
It depends on how you want your hair to look. If you want it all one length like Johnny Depp, then you should not thin it! Usually thinning hair is done by using layers. Layers are hair that is diffent lengths. You have been growing your hair for almost a year now right? What I learned to do, is to buy a large comb or pick with wide teeth that is made for longer hair. Use this pick or comb on your hair to remove tangles. Do not brush your hair when it is wet! Always use the comb. Getting layrer will decrease the length of your hair slightly. I personally prefer hair that is all one length. I have found that it is easier to take care of, and in the summer you can pull it back in a pony tail. Also, use a spray detangler with the comb to help get out the tangles. Good luck! and hang in there!

Hey Carlos, you didn't mention is your hair is really curly...I assume that using a straightening iron that it is...I would stay away from the "thinning" solution...and yes, it will affect the length...the thinning scissors cut some of the hair shorter and you may end up with a "bad haircut". Many years ago I had this done because of the same problem and I can tell you the results were a disaster...I ended up getting my hair cut short to the same length. There are many posts at this site on how to manage long curly hair...I can tell what I manage my long curly hair if you want to email me.
Carlos,
thining is removing some of the hair about 1 and 1/2 inches away from the scalp. If your stylist is carefull and removes only a little (he/she may cut into few, about 3-5 sections and he/she HAS to USE SPECIAL SCISSORS for this technique), then you will be OK. You will keep your length. Layering, as someone mentioned, IS NOT thinning the hair.
As your hair grows longer the weight will keep your hair from being too bushy. So you may not need to do a repeated thinning. I have a site that I talk about this thinning technique, including pix.
