I know I'm at the awkward phase now that people are asking me why I don't get my hair trimmed, why I let it look so bad, etc. Though I'm happy that I've arrived so quickly (I started with a high & tight back in October having been in the USMC and liked it for so long) I'd like to ask some advice from those with similar hair type to mine. Mine is moderately wavey so in the mornings I fight a 10 minute battle trying to comb with a wide-tooth comb without pulling or breaking strands, which I usually lose despite having combed through with my fingers first. If anyone has suggestions they are most welcome. I currently use a Biosilk product because it makes things a little more slippery and it does seem to help a bit. I won't ask about styling help because frankly there's not much I can do because I hate using product. Besides, I'm usually indoors away from people so I really don't care how it looks. I do have a rant though (sorry). My parents insisted I at least sit down to let them make it look good for the Christmas party because I guess parents know best and I relented. They used a hairdryer and comb to straighten out my hair and ended up snapping and pulling strands like I said they would, but the worst part was they actually burnt my right side because the dryer kept getting snagged. I didn't realize it until our friends played with my hair commenting on how long it's gotten and hair actually crumbled off. I had no idea dryers got hot enough to do that kind of damage. I ran off to see how bad the damage was and now it looks like I'm a sheep which has just had its wool badly removed. Do you guys think this is salvageable, or should I start over? Though the rest didn't break off I'm not sure if it's damaged or not. One thing is for sure I'm never taking advice from people who have completely different hair than I do (how in the world did I inherit hair no one else in the family has anyway) because I told them repeatedly my hair type isn't like theirs so hair care would be different. I don't just jump into growing hair without first researching what would be involved. Sorry about the long rant but it's a little irritating knowing that I'm finally right about something for once.
It would really be nice to see a pic of your hair. Hopefully you won't have to cut any off. I blow-dry my hair once in a while and I can't see any real harm in it, but if you, or someone else, held the dryer very close and kept it there for a while I'm sure that damage would result.
Hi Chih-Kuang Chen,
sorry to learn about that incident. I wouldn't cut anything right now. Instead, I'd only use conditioning lotion instead of shampoo and some "anti-frizz lotion" after it has dried (a clear oily fluid with dimethicone and cyclomethicone and not much else). That way, most of the damaged hair probably can probably be saved.
Did your parents possibly WANT to burn your hair in order to force you to cut it off? (Just a question)
All the best,
Hans-Uwe
-Are you having a shower right before you go to bed (i.e. laying wet hair on the pillow)? If so, that might be the reason why youre hair looks so bad in the morning. If this is the case, you might want to get your shower done with early, so you can go to sleep with a moderately dry head. Also, in the morning- Something I have just recently found VERY helpful when styling is to apply a leave-in conditioner beforehand to prevent damage from combing/blow drying.
-I think a picture would be very helpful to determine the extent of the damage. But jesus, just by the sound of it, at the very least, you're going to need a little trim just to renew the ends (some board members recomended this to me -I went out and had it done- and I found it VERY helpful).
take home message: can we see a picture?
