Hi there,
Here's something that you might like to think about.
As most of us that regularly post and visit here alot, of the people that do visit the board are a good inspiration when it comes to growing out longhair.
One thing I've noticed about the celebrity world they are not very un-inspirational when you it comes to growing out hair for a long term. I suppose the only exception to that must be Johnny Depp as he's had longhair for quite a few years. Alot of them grow it out for the film they are in and then cut it. It's a good job they don't have a longhair category at the oscars!!!
It's so nice we have a positive oasis here and not ruled the world of hollywood thats for sure or that strange world of reality television (don't get me going on that).
Cheers,

Well, it could be worse. I've heard of actors gaining weight for a role. Nevermind our aesthetic bents. That's just downright unhealthy. And then there's the whole plastic surgery thing. Accent on the word surgery. Any doctor will tell you no surgery is 100 percent safe. Maybe Hollywood ought to have rules against this stuff, the way sports leagues (at least some) have rules against drugs. I'm not holding my breath on it, though. Bottom line, these people want success bad. Bad to the point of it being very unhealthy. I don't envy them one bit.
Thats cause celebrities are owned by the mega corporations that tells them to grow or cut their hair even if its against their wish. I bet Johnny Depp will cut if he is to cast in a movie that has short haired character, in a blink of an eye.
...well thats his job
I couldn't agree with you more. And what is "celebrity" anyway? Who decides who and what is popular? The people paying the bills, ala. advertisers and their cronies. Tom Petty has a great song called The Last D.J. In it he exposes the corporate influences behind "popular" music! Unless you fit the image, have the right agent and/or are willing to sell a particular kind of beer you don't get a contract. It's all BIG BROTHER MAN!!! O.K. I'll lighten up, L.O.L. But seriously, your point is well taken. Johnny Depp, BTW, has spoken frankly about having to break out of the image Hollywood tried to create for him early in his career. He said he had to be true to himself. I'm sure keeping his hair long was part of that equation, as it is a HUGE part of mine, and, dare I say, most of ours here.

Hi John,
Brad Pitt comes to mind.
Personally, as a youngun in the '80s rocking out to the likes of Bon Jovi and Poison and wanting to have long hair like that, I've always kind of envied those celebrities who seem able to grow their hair out, cut it after awhile, then sometime later have it grown out again, all seemingly within such a short amount of time. When I was little, I always wondered how they did it. Haha!!
I've always wondered how many wear wigs. I often thought that the "Lord if the Rings" films were great for having lots of longhairs, but I think most of them wore wigs (maybe someone could correct me if I'm wrong), although I think Orlando Bloom's hair in its natural state is reasonably long (nothing like his in the movie, though). It's true that Johnny Depp comes to mind as the most consistent longhair, although his hair is short by the standards of the guys here. Brad Pitt is extremely inconsistent, and I still wonder if his very long hair in "Legends of the Fall" and that vampire movie he was in(was it called "Tales from the Vampire"?) was a wig.
I know that at least all of the hobbits wore wigs. I have a feeling that for some movies it's just easier to put a wig on than to style the real long hair. Much more consistant, and the constume people don't have to worry about natural color coming through a dye, bad hair days, etc.
I figure the movie at least LOOKED like it had a bunch of longhairs in it...Aragorn being the coolest in my opinion. :-)

Aragorn, Eomer, Legolas, Theoden, and the hobbits all were wearing wigs. Although some of the Rohirrim, or Riders of the Mark, or Riddermark looked like their hair was real (they were all the blond horsemen of Rohan). Faramir's hair may have been his own, though most of the soldiers of Gondor wore wigs as well.
I always thought Vigos hair was real, as it was the same length in interviews etc. (pretty sure it was anyway)
IIRC I believe you are correct. I remember seeing interviews around that time and his hair definitely wasn't short.

Too many people put actors on a pedastool just because they are popular. There is not a lot of intent to be a role model anywhere in the Hollywood world as they live in their own domain which is so different from that of the rest of us.
The same can be said for professional athletes. People expect such a high standard just because of their profession, and most don't meet the expetations.
I really like your statement of this board being a "positive oasis". It stands out amid the hollywoods, the athletes, and the vast other negative entities here on the internet.
Thanks for the post.

Celebrities may not inspire long term hair but that is not what they are trying to to. However, long haired characters they play certainly have had an impact on styles. They look great on screen and that is enough, they don't need to have a hairstyle they don't want.

Well, being an actor, if that's what you call being a celebrity isn't exactly the kind of job where your long hair is safe, since you wil generally be called upon to play different roles, including some in which you're not supposed to have long hair, so it's kind of off and on with acting and especially if you're an up and coming actor, you can't afford to turn down jobs that require you to have short hair.
I don't know how Johnny Depp manages it but maybe he relies on the jobs where he can have long hair to cover the income lost from jobs where he would have to cut his hair.
Compare that to Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, who's less well know whose hair length varied from short back and sides as Michael Collins assassin to respectable length down to his shouldder blades in Ride With The Devil, and it was somewhat in between in his other movies.
Better chance of keeping your hair long being a musician, artist or computer worker of some kind.
