Hi,
When I work on my car, I'm not sure how to keep my hair from getting messed up when I'm working under the car. There is always some sort of puddle of oil or antifreeze when I do a major project.
Looking for a good way to hold it out of harms' way. I've tried baseball caps, bandanas, plastic bags, and no matter what I do, it will fall off when I'm under there. Worse case was getting it caught in a creeper roller one time. It's somehere around a foot long, (depending on how you measure it) so there's enough to get in trouble.
Thanks,
Scott
braid or tail it then wear it inside an overshirt when you're under your car.
Wear a winter hat, you know, the ones that cover the ears and some of your neck. If its long enough that it would stick out just grasp the tail, turn it up, and put the hat on while you hold it up. The hat should be snug enough that the hair will stay in the hat. It may be easier if you put a rubber band or something at the base of the neck and then turn it up.

I found the best solution was to tie it in a pony tail and tuck it
inside my shirt. I my case this workded because the hair was down to
my waist.
As well as the usual road grime that falls off into your hair and into the face.
Sounds a bit familiar. When my hair was around 10 or so inches long when pulled back, I kept rolling over my tail or, worse yet, as I was under a friend's car, having another friend step on it when he was working on replacing the timing belt. So, I guess I'll be suffering again. Another thing that worked was to put it into a bun that was worn high. That kept it off the ground, but didn't get rid of the crud falling down.

Would taking a cue from the food industry by wrapping your hair around your head and wearing a hairnet (same color as your hair) under a cap solve your problem?
Use bobbie pins to pin it up, and wear a snug-fitting painter's cap. Painter's caps are made of paper and designed to be pitched when they get soiled. They can be had for free (or nearly so) from any paint store. These caps have a short bill, so if you're going to be working under the car, you can turn it around and still be able to lie comfortably on a creeper -- or if it's a problem, you could just cut the bill off. If you've ever seen any old movies that depicted a "greasy mechanic" type, you've seen the hat-without-a-bill solution. The hair net idea is also a good one, presuming you wear a hat over it to keep it clean. Good luck.

Better be careful Scott. I recall some years ago a guy whose eighteen inches of hair got caught on something while working on a car and he was scalped!!! Surgeons successfully reatttached his scalp but you could imagine the disfigurement and pain so keep it tied up and knotted under a cap.
Opps, hit the button before I added the message before. Sorry...
Today I'm working in the garage. I used a hairnet for the first time, took a baseball cap and cut the bill of, put it on my head backward, and wrapped a bandana around the exposed part below the cap in the back. Result... I stayed on perfectly and provided some shielding from dirt and goo.
Thanks!

Lots of experence here Scott. My hair is mid-back when braided so that is how I wear it under the car. BUT, putting it inside the shirt works only half the time, as it has the natural ability to crawl out for some reason. Caps get in the way..period..even held it(the braid) in my teeth a few times. What I have found to work the best is 2 things. One is to braid it then use a scrunchie to double(or triple) loop it so it is only a few inches off your head. The other is a bun which, depending on your position under the car, can also serve as a handy head rest! Your gonna have to wash it no matter what when you come out from the "black-under" no matter which way you do it.

Thanks for everyone's input. What a wonderful, supportive place. I bought a hairnet, and will go out and find a painters' cap. Time to go clean out some carburetors!

Most white boys don't do the do, that is to say the Doo-rag. That is the silk or nylon skullcap rag you see a lot of black men wear to preserve waves while they play sports or work out. It kind of has a gangsta conotation these days and it is available in many colors. A plain old black-colored Doo-rag can be found in the African American hair care section of the hygine products department of Wal/K mart. I use them in the gym and after a shower since I don't use styler/dryers. A Doo-rag can hold a pony out of the way because it ties around the forhead and keeps the pony up above the tie-strings. It is also good for deep conditionings where you leave the goop in for 1/2 an hour and watch TV.
