Recently, someone asked what shampoo/conditioner people used.
In this post, I am wondering what everyone's typical hair care routine is? I'm not looking for the brand of shampoo or conditioner, but what people do in the following questions.
1. How many times a week do you use shampoo?
2. Do you condition every wash?
3. On the non shampoo days (if any) do you wash with water, conditioner only, or not at all.
4. What about deep conditioning?
5. What about leave in conditioner?
6. How do you dry it? Totally air dry, towel, blow dry, etc?
I currently shampoo twice weekly, condition after every shampoo, and do conditioner only washes on the off days. I also have one day where I give my hair a "day off" and do nothing. I deep condition once a week (after one of the shampoos) I use leave in every time I wash. I gently towel dry (hair is still pretty wet) then air dry the rest of the way, takes around 2 hours, then comb with wide tooth comb, checking for tangles. I occassional brush with wide bristle brush, which seems to increase shine.
I was just looking for an overall "feel" of how people do things.

No, still haven't tried that.
Not at all, I try not to.
Nope.
Nope.
Towel dry - sometimes only to stop water from pouring down
Air dry - always
I shampoo whenever I shower, which is usually 1 - 3 times per week.
I do now (I started with shampoo about 2 weeks ago after being shampooless).
Water (when I was shampooless).
Not sure what you mean. I usually leave the conditioner in for longer than the 1 minute or so that is recommended on the bottle.
Never tried before.
Air dry.

1. How many times a week do you use shampoo?
-Every third day, so 2 or 3.
2. Do you condition every wash?
-Whenever I shampoo and the day after.
3. On the non shampoo days (if any) do you wash with water, conditioner only, or not at all?
-Second day is with conditioner, third is simply rinsing with cold water.
4. What about deep conditioning?
-Never tried the real stuff. I do use the 5-10 minute stuff once a week. Might try hot oil treatment sometime in the near future.
5. What about leave in conditioner?
-Not usually. Sometimes I use a detangler, but only if my hair is really dry.
6. How do you dry it? Totally air dry, towel, blow dry, etc?
-Sometimes I'll let it air dry, but since it's winter and I have to go to class in the mornings, I'll blow dry it with the heat-free setting. It's better than having my hair freeze. =)
*twice
*yes
*warm water/shower in the a.m. or my hair is "way big"
*I use a 2/1 shampoo/conditioner and then condition
*tried it but don't like it - leaves my hair "flat"
*light pressure with a towel then drip dry
Every other day. Sunday, Tues, Thurs etc.
Yes
Non shampoo days I do nothing
Nope
Nope
Light towel patting, then air.
-once a week, provided I don't put too much gunk in it. If I have to, then 2 times a week.
-no. I shower every day, but condition every other shower. However, I do condition on shampoo day, as well as the day after.
-alternate between water and conditioner from day to day
-never done it
-I didnt use it before, but just recently I have found it helpful to put in just prior to combing hair. I only comb using a shower (extra wide tooth) comb now.
-towel gently, just to remove excess dripping. and then air dry. I gave up blow drying altogether.
good questions,David..
I feel that my hair care routine up to this point has been sorta "random".I think my hair care routine needs a complete revamp...after all...you can't treat mid-back hair in the same way you do with, say, chin length hair.here goes...
during my first few months, every day. Now,about 2-3 times every ten days (it varies according to whether I feel that I need a shampooing or not).
oh yes.conditioner is a must if you're gonna have long hair!!
sometimes I condition only, other times I don't wash at all.I NEVER do the water only thing,it gives me extreme frizz. :P
hmm..is that the thing where you leave conditioner in for 30 minutes or so? If so,then..I've never done it lol..should I start doing that?
I've tried leave in a few times...I beleive it added volume to my hair, which is good.I'm hesitant on using the pantene leave-in that I have now,as it contains cones. However, i'm thinking about switching back to the cone method.I've heard that cycling brands does wonders for the hair.I'm gonna buy products from 2-3 brands one of these days and start cycling them :P
here too, random.I've been blow-drying a lot more lately though..*evil grin*
a lot more lately though..*evil grin*

1. How many times a week do you use shampoo?
Every day
2. Do you condition every wash?
Yup, and only rinse enough to leave a little in there.
3. On the non shampoo days (if any) do you wash with water, conditioner only, or not at all.
N/A
4. What about deep conditioning?
Never
5. What about leave in conditioner?
Never
6. How do you dry it? Totally air dry, towel, blow dry, etc?
Towel pat, then air only.
I also take quite a lineup of supplements, my supplement lineup includes lots of biotin, a multi, B-complex, Flax oil, and a few others. I consume large quantities of green tea and soy as well, and no caffeinated coffee.
I've tried various washing methods, including every other day, every day, water only, etc. Right now I shampoo very gently each day and then slather in tons of conditioner, and then rinse about 3/4 of it out. I always keep it down, let it naturally air dry and remove any tangles once dry.
I've been using Aussie Mega shampoo and conditioner, though I'm going to try Bioinfusion Hydrating shampoo & conditioner, which has no Ammonium Laureth Sulfate or other harsh chemicals.

I don't do it.
Every time I shampoo, and sometimes again on the off days if my hair gets frizzy.
Gently pat off and squeeze out the excess water after shampooing, then air dry.
Hi DavidN
Through the years, the longer my hair has grown the less wash days seem to be needed. So, here is what I am presently doing at 4+ years of hair growth. (I had to re-adjust your 1st question in my case.)
All.

All the best-

I probably should have explained my so-called "deep conditioning", I'm not even sure if it should really be called that. I simply use the Pantene Intense Restoration Treatment for dry/damaged hair. They suggest leaving in for 3 to 5 minutes, then rinsing out. It is probably just a stronger form of regular conditioning. I have never used things like hot oil, etc., or those products that are left in for really lomg periods of time.
David
3-4 (every other day)
Yes
Usually just water, but I lightly condition if the hair feels dry.
Tried it once or twice, but didn't really see any benefit.
Haven't tried it. I do like using a bit of oil though if the hair seems dry on shampoo days.
I pat it dry with a towel and then let it air dry.
Very good post Dave. :)

Does Infusium 23 count as a leave in conditioner? If so, then yes.
Pat dry, then air dry.
Hi Chris,
My leave in is the same as yours, Infusium 23. I just put on palms and massage into hair after showering and lightly towel drying, then combing GENTLY with wide tooth comb, then air dry the rest of the way. It tends to make the tangles easier to get out (the comb slides through easier).
David
--------------------------
Hey David,
I noticed about the comb sliding easier with Infusium 23, It seems to work well for me also, but I ended up buying a small spray bottle. It helps with applying. Do you notice any less frizziness with Infusium?
Later,
Chris
Hi again Chris,
That's what I use, it comes out of a spray bottle, I think it does cut back on the frizz factor, although not so much the last two days due to the recent really mild, windy and humid weather here-- I had BIG hair yesterday after my walk LOL! (with frizz thrown in for good measure!)
David
I could not find it in a spray bottle, for me it came in a 24 or 32 oz squirt bottle.
The size I found is 225 ml, which for Americans not on the metric system would be around 8 oz, I guess it is actually a squirt bottle, called "Infusium 23 Leave in Treatment", says on bottle "corrects, restores, structurizes". (It is a rather thin solution which I put in palm of hands and massage into hair, trying especially to get to ends, which tend to be dry in my hair)
Hi David,
This is my routine:
generally 2 or 3 times, depeneding on amount of exercise done.
Yes - without conditioner i couldnt untangle my hair, it would become frizzy too.
Not at all.
Never tried it but maybe I should.
Tried some frizz ease stuff, i dunno if i applied it wrong or something but it just clumped my hair together. Never used it since.
Depends on the time got ive got or not. I always blot excess water out with a towel til my hair is semi dry. then i gently finger comb my hair, then i either blow dry it or air dry, (i do the later most).
Neil
me (I'm female with long hair)
1 once a week or less if i can get away with it
2 absolutely
3 dont touch it
4 never tried it
5 never tried it but I'm not that fussy about washing condition fully out at the ends
6 comb out tugs (conditioner always helps) then leave it alone
my boyfriend (he's male with waist length hair)
1 2/3/4 times a week (although he doesn't have to which drives me nuts)
2 when he remembers (which drives me nuts, always condition guys, it helps get rid of tugs)
3 dont touch it
4 never tried it
5 never tried it
6 comb out tugs (or tug out tugs in his case, drives me nuts, be gentle!!!) then leave it alone
and I get mad at him if he washes it too often because he doesn't need to but he thinks he does, washing every day destroys the natural oils in your head and isn't good for you
we use baby shampoo (awwwwww, it's gentler on the scalp) and any conditioner we have lying about the house (which we change now and again)
now that I think of it, he's a lot fussier with his locks than me :)
1. How many times a week do you use shampoo?
Once, at the end of the work week.
2. Do you condition every wash?
Deep condition after shampoo.
3. On the non shampoo days (if any) do you wash with water, conditioner only, or not at all.
Conditioner
4. What about deep conditioning?
Olive Oil !! Wonderful stuff
5. What about leave in conditioner?
Lousy stuff
6. How do you dry it? Totally air dry, towel, blow dry, etc?
Air drying in the desert is about the same as using a blow dryer on "HI"
During my work week, I tend to keep my hair tied, put a tad of pomade and/or hair spray on the sides for frizzies, top the whole mess off with a ball cap or hard hat and forget about it. I rinse my hair in conditioner during my evening shower and let it air dry.
When I know I will be off for a while, I shampoo (with a diluted shampoo), deep condition with Olive Oil. I will "fuss" with it a bit (lightly blow dry, add a tad of jojoba wax and a tad of spray, lightly brush) then wear it loose. After a few hours of outdoor activities (hiking, gardening, stalking the cats, etc.)...it settles into sort of a rustic, natural wavy, curly look, which I enjoy.
Good Questions...thanks for asking David
Walter White Tail
Can i use the same olive oil that my mom use to cook with in my hair?
it says 100% olive oil on it.

Get his book and read it. Tons of good information. Everything about hair care....you'll come up with your own best routine and products.

No. Never.
My goal is to do a Water Only wash every 3-4 days...typically I go 5-7 because I am lazy.
Never.
Never.
Roll it in a microfiber towel for a half hour or so...damp but no drips afterwards, then air dry loose.
Finger detangle when dry, then comb with a fine toothed wood comb when totally detangled.
Most days I only use conditioner. Once a week, I shampoo and condition afterward. My "deep conditioning" is to leave the conditioner in for about an hour once a week (sometimes this is done on the same day as the shampoo). If I don't use leave-in conditioner, my hair is too puffy for my liking. When drying, I dab my hair with a towel so that the water is not pouring, then I let it air dry.
About twice a week.
Yes, in fact i HEAVILY use conditioner after rinsing out all the shampoo!
"All of the above" (in other words... it depends on my mood, how much time I have, how itchy my scalp may be, etc. etc...)
Haven't ried it yet, that I can recall...
Yes. Although I usually prefer beneficial oils massaged into the ends instead.
I wrap it in a towel for about 5 minutes (looking like "Carmen Miranda" - lol); then I shake it loose and let it just air-dry!
I do apprtoximately the same as you do, David, --- except that I never use a brush on my hair whenever it's still wet.
Take care, David!
- Ken
Hi Ken,
It's true I never use a brush on my hair when wet, only when thoroughly dry. That makes us have pretty identical care routines, then!
David
Thanks for all the great feedback! Obviously there's no "right" or "wrong" way to do things, as there are a lot of great heads of hair here.
David
I am happy to answer (as well as to read the other answers) to your questions, David.
Once, maybe two or three times if I am feeling really gross (or used products that leave buildup)
Yes. EVERY wash.
With conditioner.
I use as one of my two usual conditioners (and it is my preferred brand) "Infusium23 3Minute Deep Conditioning Treatment, Anti-Frizz Formula". I use it like a regular conditioner, a 3-Minute Conditioner on some days, and...
... I also use it as a styling product/leave in after showering.
I am finally long enough that I can simply squeeze out most of the dripping water, gently patting away and last drippers with a towel, before letting it airdry.
I hope this helps.

Hi!
I wash my hair every other day, about 3 to 4 times a week and I always use shampoo and conditioner. When I get out I headbang a little, so to speak, and then I comb+fingercomb my hair slowly removing all the tangles while still wet (I NEVER comb my hair when dry..it works for me that way). After that I headbang a little more (not too much otherwise I'll get a little frizz) and give it the final touches with the comb. I let air dry
and that's it. I don't use anything else in my hair..other than shampoo and conditioner..ever. I've learnt a lot about my hair and have certainly found out what works best for me..thank god. I found out that some shampoos work MUCH better than others..for instance..I can't use pantene in my hair cause it leaves my hair way too dry but I know a friend of mine who uses it and her hair looks gorgeous and shiny and silky... so my advice is: try several brands and find out the one that's best for your hair..it really is that important.

Yes, I apply and leave it on hair for at least ten minutes
Not at all...
On the non-shampoo week I wash it, then condition and wash again.
rarely I put baby/olive oil - Jojoba is almost impossible to buy where I live ;)
I do that every month or two
Never tried it
Towel + blow + air, in the summer I just do total air dry.
Moreover :
I wash my hair using a vinegar or lemon juice wash after shampoo and before conditioner. I do that just when I don't forget to buy lemons or don't forget not to eat one :-P.
I do finger combing (or Flinstones comb when in a hurry).
I do combing before wash, not after.
I cut split-ends every 3 months or so
IMO good condition is a key to success. After came across the MLHH and picked up a good routine, I have almost no split ends in spite of the fact that curly hair is fragile.
No hairsprays for me. Sometimes I use moderate amount of mousse, just to reduce frizziness and keep these ringlettes more defined for longer time eg. if I'm going for a long business trip.
Good growth,
Adalbert
1.How many times a week do you use shampoo? Depends where I'm going or what I'm doing but I use KMS shampoo usally 2 or 3 times a week.
2.Do you condition every wash? I use a leave-in conditioner after every wash.
3.On the non shampoo days (if any) do you wash with water, conditioner only, or not at all. I do nothing on the non-wash days I give my hair a break.
4.What about deep conditioning? I don't do it very often.
5.What about leave in conditioner? Potion #9 by Sebation
6.How do you dry it? I wrap it up in a towel while I dry off and get dressed. Then take it down, put Potion #9 in it and comb it out with a pick, starting at the bottom working all the tangles out. Then let it airdry. If its cold outside and I'm going somewhere I'll bend over and blowdry upside down.
I only use a brush when my hair is dry. I use a wide bristle brush. Brushing your hair when it's wet breaks it.
