You must think I am the pickyest person in the world by now lol... I'm sorry I'm always posting about this combing, brushing thing, but I'm trying to figure out if I'm not harming my hair...
I eventually notice my hair gets really softer and wavier (a sign that my hair is healthy) when i comb... Also, I get less frizz and more shine.
Now I STILL here some snaps... not much, just like 4 to 6 in the whole combing process... My wondering is if this is normal and if it would happen with the brush as well... I wonder if the brush also snips some hair but doen not sound like it does because all the noise it does when geting through the hair...
So what do you think? =P I do believe I still have to master my combing technic as well so I won't hear those nasty sounds so much, I believe combs are much more healthy than brushes, but I'm trying to figure out... erm... why... hehe
Thank's a lot guys, and sorry if I sound to picky =P
Hello David, I also have wavy hair and I only use wide tooth comb. (and I mean WIDE). Couldn't find a picture of it but it's similar to this one in shape: http://www.thebodyshop.com/images/accessories/products/pd_detangling_comb.jpg
Mine is one piece and plastic. It's very important that the teeth are smooth and rounded and not thin or sharp. I wash the comb once a week in hot water and ACV, and then oil it with 2-3 drops of olive- or coconut oil. My hair *never* snaps anymore. Brushing out made it look "sort of" straight but it only created more damage and frizz in long term.
By the way, your hair looks nice. It's good to be picky! :)
hmm...interesting..I'll try that!!!(what is ACV,btw????).Also, can you do the same thing with brushes? :))
If you have a plastic brush you can safely use the same technique. Just dip the brush in a (medium sized) bowl of hot water, add about 50 ml ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) and leave it like that for at least 10 minutes before rinsing it thoroughly. ACV will remove any build-up on the brush or comb. Only downside is that the brush can fill with water and trying to get it out can be annoying. :/
I dont know how a boar bristle brush would react to water though. I have one, but used it only once or twice since it made my hair so static. But yes, I also heard that it distributes oil quite well. Maybe it would work for your hair.
ok,thanks!!one more question though:when you say olive oil,do you mean the olive oil that is actually being used in food?would my hair smell funny if I applied olive oil to it?Thanks!!:)
I was wondering that also.
Yes, regular Extra Virgin Olive oil. Doesn't smell much if it's good quality, especially if you only use two drops to oil the comb or the brush. But if you're still worried that you'll end up smelling like salad dressing, then you can use coconut-, almond or jojoba oil instead. (Almond doesn't have any smell.)T he point is to make the comb smooth enough so it goes easier through your hair without causing damage. :)
Hey Joao
I am not sure, but have you ever tried "Finger Combing?" This is the SAFEST way of all because the second you hit a snag you can work on it to free it. Go real easy starting at the bottom and working your way up and this just might end the snap problem for you. Some longhaires use this technique only. (EdG to name one.) I do it all the time.
Then, if desired use the wide tooth comb (again starting from the bottom and working your way upwards.)
I hope this might solve the problem of the snaps.
Justin~
Ya know. . .dreadlocks don't have to be combed/brushed at all ;) That way you can stop worrying about damaging your hair, lol.

yeah,well..I;m not a big fan of combs,I like brushes better.I just bought a brush a few days ago, before then I was just fingercombing (I'll post a pic of the brush later).well,I think you should detangle ONLY with the fingers, and THEN use a brush/comb,that's gonna reduce the snapping drastically. Also, don't even think of using a brush/comb on wet hair :)).
I had a question...whoever can answer it?I have no idea what a boar bristle brush looks like, can someone post a pic?I've heard that it distributes the oil much better than a regular brush :))
Thanks.
Gave me a reason to break out the camera before my next update, lol! It even has a wooden handle (ooh! ah!)...
