Welcome to the board, Joe! To answer your questions... The awkward stage is when your hair is at a point during which it may stick out funny, be rather shaggy, etc., and is longer than you would normally wear it, but not yet considered "long hair." If possible, I'd recommend not using gel at all, as alcohol-based gels tend to damage hair. If you comb your hair when it's wet, be gentle when doing so as hair is much weaker when wet, allowing for stretching, breakage, and other damage. Look forward to seeing some photos! =)

Hello Joe and welcome to the board. Great to have you here.
If you click on "Links" at the top of the main page you will see a variety of things having to do with Long Hair. Perhaps the best to start with in answering any questions you have right now is to be sure and read the wonderful Thesis in 4 parts by Bill Choisser.
Good luck to you in growing out your hair.
Hi Joe,
Welcome to the board! James explained the awkward stage very well. Its the stage where your hair goes where it wants to and not where you want. Somedays you wake up and your hair is ok and other days you wake up and your hair's in a terrible state. A good example of my awkward stage is in the post "Days of old...for your amusement". In future ask any questions on this board and people will gladly help you out with problems. : )
