I bought a boar bristle brush, but it doesn't seem to distribute oils from my scalp. I just use it like a normal brush. My hair is moderately thick and slightly wavy. Am I doing something wrong?
I also have a boar bristle brush, but I have to say I don't like it... For us with thick hair, I don't think it would be a good idea, but it always depends on how you use it. Boar bristle brushes should only be used on perfectly detangled hair, having long strokes from top to bottom: that should distribute the oils. I have used it as a normal brush once as well but all it did was damage, for if the hair is not perfectly detangled it will break it =( Anyways, I've got an imitation of a boar bristle brush, and it is great because it detangles my hair really gentle while is also distributes the oils. I have recently discovered that if you are really gentle with the brsuh it won't break your hair, no matter the brush I guess...
And here's a hint: if you've got thick hair, don't brush it all at once (I used to brush all my hair, lying it on one side of my shoulders and stroking all of it). It's better to separate it in two, bringing it to the front, and then starting at the ends of each side, working your way up...
I wish you good luck with the boar bristle brush... if you find it doesn't work for you, leave it... I did the same =P
