There was a bit on the news this morning about doctors, saying that they were dressing too casually. Now, personally, I couldn't give a damn what my doctor wears under their white coat, but they seemed to think that most people do??
What does this have to do with long hair? Well, they found some ***BALD*** bow-tied doctor who proposed a dress code for doctors, including 'no long hair on men'!!! Will these people never give it a rest?
They also interviewed a slightly fascist woman doctor who had sent a resident home for wearing jeans on hospital rounds.
To be fair, the male reporter said that doctors dressing casually was just in line with chnages in the rest of soceity, but then he spoilt it by saying "we should dress properly on camera".
Personally, I hate the fact that male announcers in the US always wear a suit and tie, never mind the fact that they always have short hair, and that the female announcers always have shoulder length hair as an absolute maximum. Why can't we have announcers wearing a nice sweater? I'm not at work when I watch TV, so why the hell would I want to have the news read by some git in a suit?
This was on network news in the US, probably channel 4 in Washington, possibly NBC? Sorry, I should have paid more attention to what channel I was watching.
The irony is that I'm 49, so I'm hardly some youth protesting that the old folks are too stuffy. The phrase 'young fogies' comes to mind.
Is there a doctor in the house? Or a TV reporter? I'd love to know what you think.
It's just more BS from radical conformists. Watch some medical shows on TLC or Discovery Health and there are doctors dressed "more casually" than others, including some with ponytails, but they are also some of the best doctors/surgeons/nurses around. It should *ALWAYS* be performance over style.
Hello,
About two years ago, the issue was brought up in Quebec, however, it was about piercings on medical staff, and jeans. A policy was written up in some hospitals, requiring male interns and doctors who have long hair to tie it back.
What is weird, is that it is often stated, that "the general public" is not comfortable with self-expression.
It seems, that after 40 years of seeing men with long hair, people should be used to it.
Have a nice day,
Georges
That's the part that dives the lie to all this, I think, Georges. I don't think it's even true that the general public doesn't want the people they deal with to express themselves in their appearance. Or maybe that's just me?
I stopped watching television sometime in the 1990s and got rid of the TV altogether in 2001. I haven't missed it.
Television showed me things that I didn't want to see. The Internet is much better at having content that matches one's interests.
Ed
I also stopped watching TV... in the early '80s and I don't miss it a bit. Our TV is only used for videos and even that is on a rare basis. And to think... I was planning on going into broadcasting [production and engineering side of it] after high school. Glad I didn't... :)

I would ditch my tv, but I like Sci-fi shows way too much. There is still decent stuff on tv, you just got to look for it. Don't plan on getting decent programming on Fox, or CBS anymore.
The late 90's was pretty good on fox, the 00's awful. As much as I like AMerican Idol, I don't think it is as good as the X-Files or SLiders.
I agree with Ed. by the way, it's good to hear from you Ed. I confess I have a tv, but as with others, it's about 98% for watching films. when broadcast tv goes all digital, I'm taking down the antenna (yes, no cable here--just POA, plain old antenna) and doing without. broadcast tv is like a drug. It rots your mind but is so insidious you don't realize it unless you quit watching it for a year or so. When you go back to it, (this happens when I'm in a hotel room--i turn on the tv and flip the channels, always verifying that nothing has changed; just the same old crap) you'll wonder how you ever watched it, and find it idiotic and intolerable. There may be a good show--this happens every 40 years or so, but you'll find out about it sooner or later without having to watch tv and filter the garbage. Let others do that if they wish to, while you read a book or engage in a hobby. I was at a commencement ceremony at Dartmouth College in 1989. The speaker was Joseph Brodsky, the late American Poet Lauriate and his address to the graduates was about boredom. In his thick Russian accent (I'll never forget this part) he said, "Avoid television, especially the flipping of the channels. That is boredom incarnate."
My wife (then girlfriend) and I killed the television 7 years ago when we first moved in together. It's been one of the best decisions we've made. Having peace and tranquility in the home is absolutely wonderful.
I don't watch TV at all, but it's just because it doesn't interest me. I'm on the Internet all the time, though. For the same reason you stated... the Internet is better for matching your interests. I've never really cared about TV. I don't watch it.
I'd be happy for them to set such standards for doctors on one condition: fix everything that's wrong with healthcare first.
Kidding of course. It's really nobody's business what the doctor looks like as long as it doesn't harm the patients. To that end, I wonder if those guys know about the tie study. Tie study? Yep. That's right. Turns out that neckties on doctors harbor germs, and may harm patients. I don't recall if they concluded that it was actually having an impact; but to be on the safe side, docs shouldn't wear ties I think. Now, let them put that in their fashionista pipe and smoke it.
I did read about how doctors' ties carry germs and they shouldn't wear them. In fact that was on TV too. For all I know it could have been on the same channel, as they will generally air anything to fill the time. Ironic, isn't it?
Ties are going the way of the dodo bird. It's about time really. I work in a law firm, and we don't wear ties. The only thing is, the tie is usually the brightest part of the traditional male office outfit. Sports jackets and smart trousers tend to come in various shades of dirt (earth tones to use the common euphemism). However, I wear shirts in bright solid colours, like shocking pink or bright red, or just a deep blue or a dark red, or green, or brown. I don't have any white shirts.
Well my mom works at the hospital as a chemist. She always wears a white robe because of sterilisation. I think doctors must wear robes because of viruses that may be on their clothes:
When a sick person caughs his cells may get on doctors clothes maybe he has a flu?
So to continue I don't think doctors must wear their hair short it doesn't have anythink to do with sterilisation. Besides for the ones that watch "Dr. House" one of male doctors has shoulder lenght hair.
Sorry for my bad english...
It seems 90% of the people out there dont like to think, they let the TV do their thinking for them. Its like sheeps, you know if you lead a sheep down a cliff the rest will follow...
Many of us here talk of feeling more ourself/normal/at home having long hair. With short hair something is missing: we don't feel quite right. I think the same goes for clothing. I have a knee length Mexican "sweater" similar to a serape. It buttons up the front and kind of looks like something you'ld see in an old Western and would wear cross chest gun belts with. I love it - I could wear it everyday! I wish I lived in a culture that dressed more relaxed: i.e. Hawaii, Mexica, Peru, Guatemala. That type of "ethnic" clothing is comfortable, practical, earthy. Granted, there are business types in all those societies that put a suit and tie on when they go to work but I think that is due to pressure from our Western culture. (sad) As for Dr.s with long hair, there's a guy from the SouthWestern region of the USA, I think Arizona, who's specialty is snake bite venom. He has a long ponytail. I guess, conservative or not, if you're bitten by a Diamond Back Rattler you wouldn't much care what the Doctor looked like who saved your life!!! Bruce'ster
The snake bite doc can be seen on "Untold Stories of the ER" on TLC. Cool doc!
I dont mean to diss Americans or Westerners in general, but I think the Western culture is one of the most unaccepting culture in the world. Think about this: If Americans go to a foreign country they expect that country to conform to the American way, and if they come to America, we expect them to act American. Like even the Chinese culture is more accepting, probably because they dont care about what their neighbor does as long as it does not affect them. Back in the day the British and the Americans used to go around to less civilized nation and practically force western culture on them. Alot of the countries today are "conservative" including the Greeks, is because of western influence. For example a truely traditional Chinese or Japanese would never cut his hair, but yet in China, Taiwan, or Japan, or any other Asian countries we are expected to cut our hair if we are men because of Western influences.
hmm..I would think that America is a little more "laid back" than the other eastern cultures regarding hair length...anyway,I'm not sure, you've lived in both cultures,so you know better than I do,but...
I know for a fact that Greeks are much more conservative than americans.I'd shudder to think how my relatives in Greece would react to my long hair. But that's not the biggest problem I have with my fellow greeks. The problem is,a lot of 'em are hypocritical.Greeks incorporate a lot of Western ideas into their own lives (for example, they copy lots of American things, including Big Brother, who want;s to be a millionare, they drink coke, etc).Yet they HATE Americans (because of the whole "Irak" issue).go figure...that's entirely hypocritical. Now, don't get me wrong,I'm a proud Greek, but this particular thing that the Greeks do pisses me off!!I'm sure the Greek media are to blame for this..they're the one that are painting a "bad guy" image for the Americans :((
I dont think the Greeks are the only one guilty of such hippocracy. I know guys like Arabs and Middle Eastern would go around saying how they hate Americans yet they would wear Jeans or other American things and desire American stuff. I mean half the flag burning guys out there they wear American things. You know another thing is even Americans hate America... or at least what America stands for. These days you can't even display the American flag in America cause it might offend someone...
-------------------------------------------------
America is in it's last days and we (Americans) can only blame ourselves for not seeing this when voting bush into office,
although some say that he stole the election. Don't get me wrong, I love America but I despise our stupid leaders and am really pissed off at the nearsighted idiots that supported and voted for him. Can we say WW3?, If it wasn't for this A hole, we would not be in this predicament. I was even thinking about moving to Canada but decided that I won't be pushed out by these neocons! I will stand and fight against this fascism!
A big problem with the American mindset is that most think that they are better than others, a big mistake.
Well now I feel better, but it won't last long... :-(
I want to move to the USA though because you know, its where I grew up, but they wouldnt let me in, so I have to settle for Canada.
---------------------------------------
I think you would be better off in Canada as opposed to the USA.
I believe there might be wars in the states, there is a lot of problems brewing and almost anything could set it off unfortunately.
I dont know... when most the people lets the TV do their thinking for them... dont see that happening. But it would probably not do the world economy any good if the USA falls into a civil war because world economy depends so much on the USA. However I felt that Canadian government seems reasonable enough, I mean they dont make it impossible to immigrate... like the US.
I always feel slightly awkward as a foreigner in your country, but WTH. Millions of people demonstrated their patriotic duty by voting against the neocons in November. The sad thing is that the Shrub still has two more years in which he can screw things up even worse. If I could vote I'd vote for any damned fool before I'd vote for him.
I just hope that the Democrats can reign in this fool before its too late if it isn't yet.
I thought my rantings would get flamed for sure.
Ok, can someone explain what this political rant has to do with long hair for men?? How about we keep the politics out of it?
Jim
When I had to pick a doctor they all seemed alike except for the man with shoulder length hair. Haven't needed to go see him yet but I look forward to meeting him. While all the choices had similar credentials his long hair made him stand out from the others and I'm going to make sure he knows it worked in his favor.
