I'm 20 and I've had long hair for several years now, cos I just loved having it. My friends and family were going on and on about how they hated it and I made a spur-of-the-moment decision and relented to the pressure and got it cut short.
This message is a warning to the guys out there: DON'T GET IT CUT OFF! This is the worst thing I have ever done. I feel naked, my head feels light and my neck is always cold. I miss playing with it. It was down to my chest and it's all gone now - fear not, I am growing it back but it's gonna take awhile.
Hairdressers are evil.
Someone please help me, I'm having a really hard time with short hair! I hate it!
Thanks,
Matt.
First of all, Hairdressers are not EVIL. It sounds like you made the decision and told the hairdresser to cut your hair short.
Did the hairdresser ask you if you were sure you wanted to cut it short or did the person just begin cutting after your inital instruction?
Most hairdressers spend a few minutes discussing what is to be done to make sure the client is ready.
I am a long-hair-on-men enthusiast, yet have done many long to short haircuts on guys. I also give alot of guys their simple twice a year trims. I always make sure the guy is ready before cutting their hair short. I will even do more than one haircut in stages going shorter and charge them only for one haircut....just to make sure the person will be happy.
Most guys are ready to go for it by the time they walk into my salon. Perhaps one in five that I have had further contact with regret cutting it short.
I am sorry that you are sad about your hair. DO grow it back (I hope quickly) and remember this as a lesson. Next time, use what everyone on the board calls the two week rule: wait two weeks and if you are still thinking about a drastic cut, then go ahead.
I have to disagree with this. I have gone to hairdressers with very specific instructions (exact lengths, the whole nine yards) and they
still went and cut what they wanted.
I have found alot of hairdressers take your instructions and completely ignore them.
Many hairdressers forget that it is my hair, not theirs.
hope you guys can help
everytime i start growing my hair long it gets sloppy/messy so i get it cut again. i really want to get my hair the way tom cruise had it before his breakup. after that maybe leven longer. i'd appreciate any help.
Hello,
from personal experiences about former haircuts I can approve your comment. The terrible stories about hairdressers I heard were most related to women, so I think there must exist a lot of bad apples in your business. But I don't know if I overestimate statistical exceptions.

Yeah, I know how you feel. I cut my waist-length hair off short a few years ago, and quickly grew to HATE it short! I didn't want to leave the house for a while. I vowed I'd grow it back as long as it was, or better yet, even longer! So that's where I am now... 5 years and still not even close to how long it was before. Oh, well...
Sounds familiar...
Not that long... I'm almost to where I was before I was chopped up by my sister. Got another month or two. Then, I'll be growing it some more.
Worse yet, sister's are evil.
Do what I did. Take Biotin and Fo-Ti. 3 600mcg tablets of Biotin and 2 500mg Fo-Ti capsules. Seems to have done the job. Went from 3/4" of growth each month to 1.5" each month.

Matt,
Don't give up hope. Find a (male) longhaired hairdresser like mine, use the two-week rule, and take heart! The attached pic is after only one year from a military short haircut. A year may seem like forever, but it's not.
Keep it long!

Hi Matt.
Sorry to hear about the pressure and the result. I think something needs to be done to reinforce a guy's attitude towards his long hair, and help him counter the pressure to cut it.
My ride to and from work has been highlighted by the longhaired guys I see. However, sadly, those with the longest hair seem to have ended up cutting it really short.
The first was a guy selling car batteries. Seemed around 22-24. Had thick curly black hair down to the middle of his back. Cut it 4 years ago, and has kept it short since.
The second (whom I mentioned in an earlier post) had lovely straight black hair down to his waist. Around a year and a half ago I was horrified to find that he had cut it very very close. Some consolation is that I saw him a week ago, and it was very bushy, upto his collar.
Just today I had a major disappointment, when I saw this guy (seemingly in his 20s) whose hair I had watched grow from just above shoulder length to waist length, standing around with about 1/4 inch of hair all round! What a terrible tragedy!! Anyway, I hope he grows it back again.
Meanwhile, look on the bright side. You can take it as a challenge and see how fast it grows back. Also, if u really have a problem with the pressure, do what I did and get a token trim to shoulder length. (Which is what I wanted to do, but my hairdresser, bless him, insisted on leaving it a little longer - not all hairdressers are evil!)
All the best,
Rudy
