I had hair down to the middle of my back- nearly 3 feet of it. I grew it for about 6 years. I decided finally to go for a change. My hair is really thin and straight, and boring : ) So, I got dreadlocks. It was a 4 hour process, about $200. I couldn't get my hair wet for a month (a tremendous act of willpower for me).
It's been a year now, and it looks really cool. What do people think of white boys with dreadlocks? With the number of guys in metal and punk bands with dreads, it's acceptable enough, though I could never move up in my company because it's against the appearance standard.

Hi Dan,
Dreadlocks can look great on anybody!
Do you have pics of yours?
I know what dreadlocks are when I see them, but what is done to the hair to get it that way? Someone told me that happens when curly hair is not combed. Is that true? Sounds strange to me.
Also, once you have them, how can you wash your hair? Can they be un-done? As you can tell I have no idea about dreadlocks.

I think its great and beautiful(not in that way, lol) that you can actually resist the norm and do what YOU want to do, not what society thinks you have to do. :)
On a related note, I had a friend who tried to put dreads into his own hair, and it was awful. He braided his hair into tiny little braids and then put a super-strength perm in it while the braids were still in. He got this off a website. Well, the perm wrecked it because he left it in for an hour and a half, and the braids weren't all the same size, so at the end he looked pretty weird, like Marge Simpson. After a month, he cut if off and is now going to go to a salon next time it gets long enough. Good luck with your dreads and keep us updated!

Dreadlocks are basically locks of hair knotted up permanently. It can happen naturally if you don't comb it, but it looks best if you do them deliberately. I had mine back-combed into knots, and rolled up in curlers and permed. Yes, they were really curly for about a month!
I CAN wash them now, but only once a week. It's actually healthier for your hair since it doesn't dry it out as bad as daily washing. As time goes on, they lock up tighter, so they don't friz out. I also roll them in hair pomade sometimes. I get maintenance every couple months to dread up the new growth. They tie thread around the locks at the base to hold them together, and it knots up well.
Even tho it's expensive, I recommend you get them done professionally. Otherwise, you'll probably get them done wrong.
When I want to get rid of them, I have to grow it out an inch or so, and cut it to that length. They don't come out, that's all there is to it.
I don't have a pic, but Im working on it. : )
How can people stand not washing your hair for such a prolonged period of time? If I skip ONE day washing my hair, I can't stand it.
