And I bet you can guess why. They told me not to come back until I get it cut. They want me to come cowering back like a scared dog would when he disobeys his master. They want me to throw away who I am and comform to a social meme. I'm not a rebel by any sence of the word, but this is exactly what they want me to do. Well #$%^ them. Wish me luck on finding a place to work where they allowe people to be themselves. Any suggestions for a recent High School grad?
where do you work?
I was working for a security operation. I enjoyed the work for the most part and didn't hear a peep about it until they stuck me in the state's capital where I was suddenly treated like a little kid in sunday school. I would just try to get on at another account but it was the head slave driver that told me not to come back.
This is insane... truly insane. Are there any women with hair as long or longer than yours?
When one door closes....another opens !
There are a million opportunities out there for you, so go grab one of them. Best of Luck and let us know how you make out.

I dont know... I guess security is also one of those jobs where "image" is important like law enforcement so they dont like long hair. Try finding a job where you dont have to deal with people like maybe auto mechanic... but do tie your hair back if you are going to work on a car because those moving part is deadly for loose hair.
I hope someday an employer fires a longhair with enough money (and desire) to pursue a "lengthy" lawsuit.
Nothing to feel bad about E.
If your boss cannot accept you for who you are then to hell with him! Try applying at best buy. Thats where i work and my boss dosen't seem to have a problem with my hair. I work as a cashier and get along great with customers. It is a cool job but can be hectic at times. Especially during the holidays and weekends! I recommend you drown your hair in "hellspray" or gel if you are going to an interview. Remember, First impressions always count. Well good luck to you pal
You'll find something that will work for you. Just remember, you can always over dress for a job. Good clothes and hair neatly tied back says more than a buzzcut and a t-shirt ever will.
Good luck,
Bruce
Good Luck Finding a new one then shouldnt take very long with a high school degree !
Indeed, you probably won't have much trouble finding another job. Good luck =)
Sorry about that. I know you are upset now, but give it a few days and start looking for a new one. Just dress neat and present yourself well; you'll be ok.
I imagine lots of people here would have lots of tips and suggestions if you want to ask.
Hi Emmerich,
sorry you had to go through that experience. Can they really terminate you ORALLY - and "for a cause" at that? Did they have a written company policy? They may have broken one or several laws, depending upon the state where you are. How conservative is West Virginia?
I'm still utterly surprised - your hair is coming along nicely, but as of December 2006, it wasn't THAT super-long yet if I remember correctly (it will get there, that's certain).
Of course, you don't want to waste time over that lost job, but it can't hurt to check with places like ACLU and GPAC - both in regard to find out whether there was blatant disregard for applicable laws ("blatant" disregard sometimes makes it easy to give that company a hard time - and often, you'd feel better just by knowing that you COULD return the harrassment they meted out), and to find out about potential new employers.
Now some constructive ideas: As a high school graduate, you should be interesting for libraries, and, perhaps, radio stations - of course, I don't know what they would pay. Also, it's worth while to check with bookstores, both independent and chain stores. They just need to be big enough so that they can commit themselves to paying you a reasonable wage.
Did you learn any foreign languages in High School? That would be an asset as well...
In any case, all the best, and sick with who you are.

I wanted to say:
In any case, all the best, and stick with who you are.
Unfortunately, my keyboard ate the "t" in "stick", and being yourself is healthy, not sick, of course.
Hans-Uwe
hey Hans,
the library is indeed a good suggestion.I currently work at a library, and there are 2 other longhairs that work here!!
Thank you all for the support and suggestions. I've actually thought about working for a library when a family member suggested it a few years ago. I have a vague idea of what kind of jobs are performed there though or even how I would go about applying. I guess I will look more into it. :)
I can believe it. Security firms, law, military, etc. are all about their members conforming to management requests. I am sorry you had to go through a firing. There are many places that will accept long hair on men. (Equality of the sexes? Not where long hair is concerned....)

Emmerich, if it is of any help, talk to and network with other long haired men in your area. DavidN's thread above about our occupations may give you some ideas, too.
Best of luck with the job hunt.
