In the Friday (I think it was Friday, maybe Thursday) wall street journal under "Tricks of the Trade" there was a brief account of an expert's way to wash hair. The featured expert was Frederic Fekkai......

A Salon Owner Washes His Hair
In his 28 years in the salon business, Frederic Fekkai has become almost as well known for his wavy locks as some of his A-list clients. The 48-year-old Mr. Fekkai, who owns four eponymous U.S. salons and has a high-end line of hair and body care products, says his secret to beautiful hair lies in his regular cleansing routine.
Mr Fekkai washes his hair every other day--he believes it is unnecessary to shampoo every day unless you sweat a lot or your hair is prone to becoming greasy. He avoids shampoos that contain alcohol, which he says dries out hair, and favors ones that contain naturally based ingredients such as olive oil and shea butter because, "it's very nourishing to the hair" and can soften it. He also alternates between two shampoos--one with a conditioner and one with a shine enhancer but without conditioner. This changes up the PH balance of the hair, he says, and prevents it from looking dull.
When cleansing, it is important to avoid using too much shampoo, which will make it harder to rinse out, says Mr. Fekkai, who only uses a quarter-size dollop each time. (He suggests using a tablespoon if your hair is below the shoulder.) He gently works the shampoo through his hair for 40 seconds, occasionally using the balls of his fingers to gently massage the scalp and activate circulation. "Make sure you do not rub the scalp too much or you'll irritate it," says Mr. Fekkai, who adds it potentialy harms the roots of the hair and could result in breakage. To rinse, he runs his hair under water that is "as cold as you can stand" and uses a wide-tooth comb to comb out the shampoo. Hot water will open the hair follicles, he says, and possibly trap some shampoo, which could then make the hair look limp and greasy.
Twice a week, he uses either a hair masque with shea butter to soften his hair or soaks it in a vinegary rinse that he sometimes makes on his own. (The home-made version involves mixing a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 8 oz. of water and a quarter teaspoon of conditioner.) He pours it over his head, massages it in for 20 seconds and rinses it out with water and a comb. "It gets rid of residue and impurities," he says.
When styling, he avoids using hair products that make his hair "too stiff or hard" or have high alcohol contents, which will dry out hair, he says. He tries to avoid using a hair dryer--if he has to, he only uses the dryer on "cold" or "warm" temperatures, making sure to hold it five inches away from his head.

hmmm...interesting!!no wonder my hair is so dry...my conditioner has alcohol in it!!do you know of any brands that have olive oil/shea butter, and don't have alcohol?? :))
I have no idea, sorry. I don't even know what shea butter is. i just transcribed the newspaper story.
Hey Jacob.
I remember that no-cones issue that was pointed out to us. We decided to try the Alberto V05 brand. Well , I personally hated it. at first it was great but then...... it all went downhill. Im not sure if you are still using it but if you are...Get rid of it. It is terrible. I remember reading the bottle and it contained alcohol , Ammonium , and many other harmful ingredients. Maybe thats whats drying your hair. At least thats what vo5 did for me. I am now using "Straight Arrow Mane N Tail" shampoo and conditioner. The straight arrow brand aint got any cones but the regular mane n tail does. Im not sure if they are the same brand... Well anyhow this mane n tail seems to be working fine....for now....Lets see how it works after a few more weeks.......
heck yeah I'm getting rid of it!!!I don't know what next to try though..I might try what you're using now :))I might go back to cones, who knows, maybe it's not the cones that are the problem, maybe the alcohols and sulfates..
This is what I tried posting, but someone didn't let it through

Hi Chris,
I can't seem to find Mane and Tail brands in Nova Scotia in the places I normally buy hair care products. Did you get them in a regular store or did you have to get them from a salon? Thanks for any info.
David
hey David,
sorry to go a bit offtopic here..but good thing you reminded me where you're from.you're probably close to a place called "money pit" (if you've heard of it).
btw, there's mane N tails at my local grocery store..
Hi Jacob,
I don't think I've ever heard of Money Pit, doesn't ring a bell (what is it, anyway?). (I'm from Halifax, Nova Scotia) I had another look in my Wal-Mart, as well as my grocery store and couldn't find the Mane and Tail, guess it's not available in Canada.
David
gaa,I guess it's not as famous as I thought it was.supposedly, there was a treasure buried on oak island,if I'm not mistaken, that's close to nova scotia.
Oak Island is about 50 miles SW of Halifax, there has been a rumour floating around for years about treasure there, perhaps that would be a retirement project for me, to find it, lol!
Ah, the money pit. Read this (see link below):
lol...I've read everything that's to read about money pit (except the books),I think it's design is ingenious!!stories like that fascinate me for some reason :))

I used to use that stuff.I may try it again. It was originally developed for horses hence the name.I've seen it at Wal Mart.I used to get it at a chain store called Tractor Supply.Probably don't have that where you are.You might try a feed store or a store that sells horse supplies.I live on a farm in Texas and grew up around live stock.
