Hey guys, I go to school at Pepperdine University, which is in Malibu and very close to the beach. I love surfing and just going to the beach so my hair is obviously subjected to plenty of salt water. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do to my hair in the shower after I get back from the beach? should I shampoo and conditioner? conditioner only? neither? Thanks
Why not just put a thing like those swimmers do ? A rubber hat or whatever it's called.
I'm getting one coz I'm gonna be swimming this summer. It keeps the sun and salty water away.
Peace
Leito
First,
Sea water contains chlorine, some in a free state and some bound with sodium. In time chlorine aided by the sun will bleach your hair. This is the California Surfer look, and for young guys with lots of hair it is most likely harmless. Chlorine is also a dysinfectant. It helps wounds to heal.
To prevent the bleaching, guys can add oil from most any source to the hair before going into the drink. Afterwards they can use a good quality conditioner, and even shampoo if there is too much oil left. Shampoo is not necessary to get rid of the chlorine, for cholorine is water solubable, and clear water will wash it out, however, a good bit of natural oil has been washed out as well. Depending on your hair type you may wish to replace it.
Mr. Fakkai's advice was interesting, partly useful, and scientifically quaint and indefensible. When he did not know what he was talking about he punted.
I have no evidence to prove or disproove any of his suggestions, but neither does he. This is the sort of research we need, to know what does and does not work.
We as a long haired group of men dedicated to supporting each other, also constitute a data pool to test products, and report results. Our group contains the skills for data gathering and analysis. In fact, we could even sell the results to the cosmetic makers if we could demonstrate reliability and honesty in reportiong.
Speaking as a scientist, however, this can only be useful if we carefully define terms. In the articles and follow ups for Mr. Fakkai... several people condemned VO-5, because it contains "alcohol."
My dear friends. Lets be clear. I do not and never have used VO-5 shampoo or conditioners. I do not know what they contain.
But for 247 years, I have used VO-5 "Conditioner Hairdressing," in small quantities, after shampoo. Let's be clear. VO-5 is a brand, not a product. Let me warn you. Never drink VO-5 wine, but the hair conditioner without alcohol is OK.
When I first started using it, it claimed to have lanolin as a primary ingredient, however, I think the animal rights lobby has moved away from featuring any animal byproduct, so it is very possible that it now only contains synthetics, thus depleting our petroleum reserves, but hopfully sheep derrived lanolin even if no longer admitted.
fter all, it is only marketing, and we can not presume the intelligence nor the informational status of the buyer.
However, I find VO-6 "Conditioner-Hairdressing" to be a most depndable product. After shampoo, I towell dry my hair, and carefully comb it straight back carefully removing tangles, and using a little spray-in detangler, if I encounter such a beasstie.
Then I use a little of the VO-5 conditioner, like 1/3 inch out of the tube, putting most on the ends of my hair but some on the top and front, and comb it again. I disocver that the oil has emulsified with the water, and towell drying my hair again removes even more water, Then I comb and style my hair as my public desires.
Bottom line. I think there are about 10 different products out there being marketed as 250, to confuse the public. We need to categorize them, develop a cadre to test them and report. The products need to be grouped by purpose and ingredient, not name, etc. etc.
Let's do the research! I'd design the reserach protocol. We need one team to categorize all the products currently on the market, but stated purpose, and by cluster of ingredients, then we need a group of +/- 24 guys dedicated to using these products and reporting on their results: the 24 need to be divided into about 8 groups, depending on fineness, curliness, thickness, etc. and a variety of other characteristics.
Six months of reaserach would permit removing unreliable correspondents and redefining categories of product, frequency, etc,
Bottom line, men's hair is not that diffrent from women's hair, so we become proprietary owners of an immense amount of information which the larger hair industry wants.
The programmers, theoriticians, and monitors of this site should be monitarily rewarded for the work from the royalties, not to mention the reserach protocol designer.
