Today , I was standing outside waiting for a relative when this suspicious looking man approaches me. He asked me if i had pot.. I told him no. Then he asked if i smoke pot and i still said no. He apologized and told me he figured i did(both) because of my longish shaggy hair and my glasses. I just ignored him. Afterwards when he left.......I laughed my butt off. This experience is completely off topic but i just felt like sharing it. By the way..Has something similar happened to anyone in here??
hahahaha..I can sort of relate. Last semester a guy in one of my classes asked if I wanted to go smoke some pot with him after class. I guess he assumed that a long haired guy with a beard and sandals just had to be a druggie. I told him I didn't smoke pot, and he looked sort of stunned. It was pretty darn funny, to say the least.

Hi Chris,
I have had stuff like that happen before. Some guy even thought that I was gay just cuz I had long hair. A lot of narrow minded people just assume that longer hair guys are on dope or gay.
Or maybe he was a Narc looking for a bust.
That thought crossed my mind after sitting down and thinking about the incident.
I get it all the time. Like several times a year.
Bill
you? no way.
A good portion of the support that we all receive on this board is through sharing some of the negative stereotyping that narrow-minded (read; "ignorant") people show towards long-haired men. I do not laugh it off nor find it funny; it is blatant bigotry!! It particularly disturbs me to hear over and over that you younger guys are harassed and discriminated against in school and on the workplace. Hopefully, folks who visit this site and meet people like us will become more aware of their shortcomings.
Whew ! Sorry about the Soapbox
Walter
You are absolutely correct. It is stereotyping and bigotry. These narrow-minded people seem like they cant treat anyone who looks/thinks differently with respect and decency. It is a shame that the vast majority of people in contemporary societies all follow the same trends and beliefs.
this hasn't happened to me...yet!!I guess it's just a matter of time :((
Yea... It'll happen..eventually. Maybe not..Who knows.
OH! so how about the tattoo? Are you still getting it or what?
I say go for it!! BUT! Make sure it is not visible. I think it'll look great on the shoulder area.
Brother..I'm still thinking about it.I'll probably give it a month before I decide.besides that,I don't have the money for it right now...and I still need to find a certified shop.after all,the last thing i want right now is to catch AIDS from a needle.well, thanks for asking!!
My friends do it, but you'd never catch me toking. I did it before but I never cared for it. Weird how I'm the only one in my close group of friends with longish hair and the only one who can't stand the stuff. lol Luckily, they understand and never offer me any.
Haha yes!! I was downtown (toronto) with my friend, heading towards the subway station after a concert, whcih was just this past weekend! It w as about 10 pm and very few people on the streets, and this homeless man goes "Any of you guys got pot?" we answered "no "
then we were laughing. it was pretty funny.

Marijuana's bad mmmkayyyyy... :P
HA! Thats messed up. A homeless man asking for pot. Marijuanas bad..well.. To each his own , I dont really criticize people that use it. I have tried it before(YEARS AGO AGE 15/16 MORE OR LESS) But personally dont like it. In my point of view, Its a silly "drug" that causes excessive laughter/appetite/stupidity/laziness..etc...
I like having a clear head all the time thanks to all the bad experiences i have had.
I second that chris

Anyone from Washington to the average hippy smokes pot. I know tons of college students who get straight A's and still smoke pot. Pot is a far less harmful drug than alcholol but guess what's banned.
I don't smoke it but have tried it. You are correct , It is less harmful than alcohol. Alcohol leads to violence , and fatal accidents. Despite all these bad things about alcohol , The government keeps advertising it and selling it to the masses. Marijuana induces happiness and peace(Why Is It Illegal..I have No Idea) Marijuana has its medicinal purposes as well. Marijuana also has its bad effects but not nearly as bad as alcohol. Despite all mentioned above , I dont really enjoy it much. Keep in mind that i dont criticize anyone for using it because THERE ARE responsible smokers out there. I just have various reasons for disliking it. Laziness , I have to work so i cant smoke and manage to work. Work , Sometimes they hand out random urine tests so i wouldnt risk cheating and getting fired. Extreme appetite and thirst , I will end up eating too much and gain weight. I am already overweight. Imagine on pot. Law , Police , Narcs ,etc.. You know how silly laws are aginst pot and drugs. I can risk going to jail and ruining my record. You know how picky jobs are about your rap sheet. I have no choice but to stay pot free....
Yeah, it's really sick when governments allow and even encourage cartels to grow addictive drug crops, and then their products end up in the hands of youth in other nations. The most addictive and lethal of all such crops is, of course, not cocaine, nor heroin, nor marijuana, but tobacco. And guess who grows the most of THAT crop!
Bill
I think tobacco is far worse that marijuana. I actually think marijuana should be legalized.
I find it ironic that cancer patients can be given drugs with horrific side effects, but marijuana is denied to them because it's an illegal drug. I also find irony in kids getting high off of over-the-counter cold medicine. Pretty much everything is a drug in some way, it's all a matter of how our government chooses to view it. I mean, heck, I've tried one of those (quite legal) energy drinks and felt just sick. But for someone else the same drink might be a god-send for staying awake.
Mouse
It seems relatively harmless to me especially compared to the ravages that alcohol abuse puts upon the body. When it comes to patients in extreme pain, I think it's downright immoral to deny them something that could provide a measure of relieve. Oxycontin certainly has its own issues. You can't overdose on marijuana.
I have been saying this for years, but with all the B.S. government propoganda our government says they actually convince people pot is extremly marful, and catagorize it with meth, heroine, crack ect, but is not a very bad drug at all.
I'll support legalizing pot as long as no one threatens to take my beer away from me. :-)

Lots of times. Don't buy marijuana from a stranger. It might be a cop. It should be legalised, given that the United Nations classifies it as safer than both alcohol and tobacco, but it probably won't be. Governments most likely keep it illegal just to discourage long haired hippies!!!
One of the funnier incidents occurred one time when leaving a motorcycle show. This guy tried to sell me cocaine powder when we were surrounded by at least a dozen cops! Of course, none of them could have heard what we were saying, but you'd think their suspicion might have been aroused if money and small packages changed hands! I wouldn't consider doing cocaine anyway. It's funny how gatherings of bikers are always monitorred by the cops, when IME there is never any violence. Is that stereotyping or what?
At one time I used to work with this girl who every Monday would regale me with tales of the acid trip she had taken over the weekend. It doesn't take much to figure out why she trusted in me. Rightly, as it turns out. Tripping is not for me, but I would aid enforcement of the drug laws sometime after hell froze over. She was super efficient and always finished her work ahead of time, but got fired for allegedly not completing her work when she had not only done it but finished the next task as well. Her boss (also female) just didn't like her, AFAIK.
Hi Chris,
This certainly sounds like typical stereotyping to me, I had really hoped these attitudes were wearing off in this day and age. I haven't had this happen to me yet, maybe I'm just lucky or something.
David
Hi Chris,
Yeah, I am the biggest (non) drug dealer in our town - i get asked by random strangers almost every other day. Ive never smoked, nevermind done pot, its good to be drug free : ) Must be some stereotype that came from somewhere.
Neil
HAHA! Thats funny that i read this, because something like that happened to me the other day...
Someone i barely know came up to me randomly and asked me "where i get my stuff." I was like...... ummmmm i dont? Of course, at first i was a little taken aback, but later i laughed about it.
Austin (sinergy22)
Yup. But the curlier your hair, the more they think you're a druggie (a law of proportionality to add to the very few hair equations out there). I think this particular stereotype comes from Rastafarianism, as many of its followers (the ones who grow locks, anyway) have very tightly curled hair to begin with, and many of them smoke the "herb" as part of their religion. So if you have dreads, you'll be asked a lot more if you're a druggie, particularly if your hair and/or clothes are untidy. This goes back to the foolish idea of long hair on a man being unkempt and unnatural.
However, the stereotype about glasses is just plain weird.
Peace
Thanks for sharing this interesting story.
Indeed something like that happened to me last year, too.
I was sunbathing at the river and a boy, about 18 years old, approached me and said "they forgot their -grass-, if I could help them out..." (well, I am german, I cant guarantee the correct translation for "drugs" in english "slang" correctly...)
well, I was friendly and answered "no, I am sorry" and he said "OK, thanks, goodbye" and went away. I also considered that as a very funny experience...
on the other side its a proof that the mental connection "longhaired boy/man = drug user/seller" is still alive.
best regards
Hi Leto,
That's weird. For the last 15 years or so, I've had a pony tail, and NO-ONE has ever asked me whether I do drugs. However, with or without drugs (can't smoke ANYthing), maybe I'm just not mellow enough ;-)
Maybe that equation about hair length and drugs has to do with the movies some people watch...
Hans-Uwe
Yes. It's happened to me a few times. Once a car pulled up beside me when I was walking and a guy asked me where he could get some hash.
It happens to my bf at least once a year, he is always the one approached in the street by people looking for a place to buy a pipe or where to get good stuff. We laugh.
Hahaha. That's great. People have asked me if i could get them some drugs because of my Long Hair and hippish clothes.I don't really take it offensifly tho. Only when i get confused for a girl. One time some guy tried hitting on me at a party. So i gave him what he wanted. I turned around, kissed him on the lips and grabbed his arse and then walked away. He was really embarassed and kept apologizing all night. lol
