The flip side of this issue is: As a long-haired guy yourself, have you ever personally mistaken ANOTHER guy for a woman? I mean other than just a real quick "hey is that a guy or a girl?". I'm guessing probably not. Having had very long hair for most of the past 15 years, I'm a pretty good judge of other people's long hair, and I don't ever recall actually guessing someone's gender wrong, not even the guy I saw at a video-game place, who had hair completely covering his butt! (usually I don't ever make comments, but for that guy I said something like Hey, Man! Your hair is awesome!)
Funny you should mention that. I was out drinking beer with the guys after work a week or so ago. Two guys walked past our table, and one of my coworkers commented that he thought the one guy was a girl at first. I took a look at him, and I didn't see anything feminine about him. He did, however, have long, blonde hair, about to his waist.
When my hair had grown into a blunt-cut bob almost touching my shoulders, I noticed an older man´s voice saying "Excuse me, Miss" behind me in a supermarket, and at first I didn´t react, but then somehow I sensed he was meaning me. Letting him pass with his cart I turned around to find that he was obviously embarrassed at having mistaken me for a girl; he quickly apologized politely. In fact, there was no need for an apology - I had taken it as a compliment for the length and beauty of my hair then, and I don´t at all mind looking feminine. I know that I am completely straight and admire very long shiny hair on a woman, and at that time I wanted to create that feminine look for myself. As I could see, I had been successful. It was one of the nice little episodes in my long-hair life (I used to have hair almost to my waist later).
Yep, happened to me first time this summer, and the guy had short hair! It was at the US Air counter in Toronto, and the guy was bent over forward with the super-greasy spiked hair and all I could see was the top of his head. I had always considered this a woman's style, but I know better now! (Guy had a moustache even, how embarrassing!).
So that brings up another possible kind of gender confusion that we have now, so many women are having these ugly short haircuts.
you are so right i think both men and women should have long hair it would be so cool.
oh oh, now it's just vice versa, now you trashing down short hair, that makes you not much better than the short-hairs that trashes down long-hairs.
I think everybody must do what he/she wants to do

I wish I would be mistaken for a woman! LOL But thats because I'm transgendered. Wear your hair long because you like it and one should care less about people that make negative comments for they are the sort you don't need to be friends with anyway. This stuff with long hair being fem is nuts and fearing being identified as a female is too. There are many ladies that love long hair that is well kept and that is more important than a guy thinking one is a lady for a brief moment. It's their problem. Sometimes I'll say "I don't think I'm your type" but be careful for there are real idiots out there. Should I grow a beard just to make idiots happy and be a little more acceptable being less fem? I don't think so! I may grow a beard somewhere down the road for a while but only because I want to. bob
