Did you wear headbands until you were able to pull your hair back into a pony tail?
No, I just used a gel by Aussie (the exact name escapes me now) and let it be free.
When all but the front few bits of hair would fit in a pony tail I would tuck the front ones under other hairs to make it look like they did.
Good luck man, curly hair has a much longer awkward phase than straight hair

It seems that everyday is a different hairstyle. I have little to no consistency, or rather my hair doens't behave the same way everyday.
Several ways I style after washing (if required), conditioning (everytime I shower), and gently patting dry:
1) Apply some hair product* and gently finger comb all hair away from crown, finishing with a bit of a shake.
2) Apply some hair product*, use wide-toothed comb or pick to create a part in the middle on top of head, and then finger combing the hair to the sides, adding curls that go towards the face (i.e. the hair on my right in encouraged to curl counter-clockwise into curls and ringlets). Hair will be kinda flat on top and seem a bit bigger and longer on the sides. Make sure surls don't go up at the corners or else you'll look like a munchkin from the lollipop guild.
3) Apply some hair product, use hands to pull hair back as though you were going to put it into a pony tail. Wait 5 minutes. The curls will have started to spring back from the original slick look and could use some slight readjustment, but don't fuss too much or it'll get poofy. This will make the hair look closer to the head and you may be asked if you actually got a haircut. I am using this one a lot right now as it is more neat and tidy for my teaching job.
4) Bandana. It allows curls to pour out of the back of it (which is more breathable and comfortable for me than a hat) and it feels nice when my har bounces and joggles whenever I turn my head quickly.
* Hair Products could include anti frizz serum, some extra leave-in conditioner or, especially suitable for the third option, some standard hair gel.
I hope this helps.

9 Months and 3 Days since my last haircut
Nah, I barely even knew what they were for over half of the awkward stage (on that note, I guess I still am in the awkward stage. Sucks). However, the majority of the guys with awkward-stage curly hair that I see around me are wearing head bands much of the time; if not a head band, they're wearing a tam or have cornrowed their hair. So lots of people use them. Just not me.
Nope.
Of course my wife hated every minute of it and couldn't see the outcome. Now it's not so bad. The worst was when it was too short to hook over my ears, it just kinda flopped around every which way.
Hats and bandanas sometimes...but not all the time. I haven't been big on hats since I was a teenager. Last time I grew it out, I did keep it in a bandana & cap most of the time.
