9 months 16 days but its got to come to an end. I'm going to get a hair cut soon. I am just plain disapointed in how it looks. Its been bugging me for the past couple of months. I am shedding all this hair. Like I would say I shed 90 hairs today. Not good at all. Eh it was a good journey, and this board is great. One more pic before I'm out.
Hey Sean-
To myself your "Awkward Stage" long hair looks absolutely fantastic. Just great! It appears that you have given this Hair Cut quite enough thought...........much more than the "2 week rule." The main thing that counts is that you are happy within. Just a few points to think about:
1. One is always their own worst enemy in how they think they look. The rest of the world doesn't see you as you see yourself.
2. The loss of 90 hairs per day is LESS than the average! Average is usually 100. So, in that dept. you are ahead of the game.
3. Long Hair is not for everybody...............nor is short. And some NEVER throughout their entire life find what they like.
My best to you for happiness within.
Justin
Shedding 90 hairs a day is within the normal range. If you leave your hair alone for a bit longer it will start to weigh itself down and look really good. It's your choice though...I think it would be a shame to cut it. IMO it looks good how it is already.

If I were you, I'd give it another six months or something to see what happens. When I was at your stage (first time I grew) I didn't like it very much, but then came a point where the hair decided to play nice.
Of course, it's your head so it's your choice, but I wouldn't want you to give up based on false ideas :)
unless you give up and cut it.
Hey Sean, your hair is coming along well. Curly hair is the hardest to grow, and requires the most patience. With added length, things will get better.
Take a good look at Neil. His hair is similar to yours and is quite long. Losing 90 hairs per day is normal at your current length. As it gets longer the loss rate will decrease.
At least think about it for a couple of weeks before cutting off what took 9 months to grow.
Absalom
Just took a look at neils hair myself, haven't seen it before and just had to reply to say his hair looks so amazing!
a shed rate of 90 hairs per day is absolutely normal.shed rate depends on how often you wash your hair.If you wash less often, you'll see more hairs clogging your drain than you would if you wash more frequently.it's totally normal.besides the shed rate,is there anything else specific you don't like about your hair?like Absalom said...curly hair tends to be unruly during the awkward stage.give it some time...even in the awkward stage, your hair looks awesome...I'd be sad to see you cut it.think LONG and HARD before you do anything.take care!!
Hi Sean,
your hair DOES look fantastic, and the color is great, too! This is an intermediate length, and that's where a certain look is a bit harder to maintain. Just how it will look once it's at shoulder length, with gravity doing its part to control it, or imagine yourself with a cool pony tail...
And, I concur with all the others, 90 hairs per day is LESS than average.
Did anyone else give you these ideas? Girlfriends? Parents? Is there "delayed compliance" at work, with regard to ideas, instructions, or judgements that were thrown at you many years ago?
By all means, give it more time, the way it looks will change a few more times.
All the best!
Hans-Uwe
Hi Sean,
I do not see ANY problems here! You have a really nice head of thick, curly, red hair that will look truly awesome with added length. A shed rate of 90 hairs a day is not abnormal at all, and looking at your hair, it is not thinning in the least. Shed rates can vary from around 50 to as much as 150 per day.
As you are only 9 1/2 months into the growing process, you can be expected to experience an "awkward" phase, with added length, gravity will take over, which will cause the curls to smooth out into long waves. Just scroll down to the section where people were posting their short hair pictures and have a look at Gylfi's hair, this will give you an idea of what your hair will look like with more lengthh. (He posted a current length picture in this thread as well as a short hair picture.)
Hope you give it some thought. Please, don't cut it.
All the best,
David
Sean,
I hope you reconsider, but in the end the decision is your's and your's alone. I think you have absolutely wonderful, thick, beautiful hair, and I agree with the post below that we're our own worst critics. I was getting all frustrated with the back of my hair and even contemplating a trim about a month ago. But then I started really looking at everyone around me, and I saw that most people have stray hairs, scruffiness, poofyness, random curls, etc at least part of the time. What seemed like a big deal to me really wasn't a problem at all.
You also face a choice between a "known" and an "unknown." You KNOW what you look like with short hair. There's no mystery there, no great discovery to be had. But you don't know where the longhair journey will take you. If you stop now, will you ever wonder, "What if?"

Straighten your hair, even though everyone here will say it's bad for it, i've been growing my hair for 15 months now i would have cut it over half a year ago i hadn't used straighteners, who cares if it apparently damages your hair a bit if it makes u feel more confident with the way ur hair looks rather than just having a mop on your head then i don't see the problem.
You got to hold out for it, man. I know it sucks right now, your hair looks ~very~ similar to what mine did at that point, I had to put up with "rooster" comments from my family. 8^)
But if you hold out, probably in three months you will be able to pull a high tail. That in itself makes it easier. The worst is almost over!

You're nearing the peak of the awkard phase. You need to give your hair at least another year or two to get long enough for its own weight to start holding it down.
The awkward phase has never been synonymous with looking good. That's part of why it's called the awkward phase.
Actually, that's pretty good. Even short hair sheds an average of 100 per day. You're only noticing them more because your hair is getting longer.
You are just slightly ahead of me in the awkward department. I deal with clients onsite (different places every day) and I feel pretty bad about how mine looks right now too, I feel like everyone is staring.. even laughing at me behind my back..
However, I would hate to throw away the time I have already spent on this, when I know it will eventually (sooner than later) get to a better stage. Yours will too.
As someone else said, you will never know how it WILL look if you don't give it the chance. I personally think that your hair looks great right now, and I can envision you with longer/curly hair.. and that you'll be one hell of a looker with THAT!
Good luck to you.. Stick it out, you'll be glad you did I am sure!
Dude I'm right there with, I'm thinking about cutting it myself....I say we both hang in there. Your hair looks fine.
Oh, No, Sean! The Other Shawn! The other first-time hair growing, curly head named Shawn! I had noticed you were conspicuously absent for a while.
Ah, your hair is so similar to my own, surely, we can push through this akward stage together! I will post some new 9 month 4 day pics above so you can compare for yourself. I am hoping you are just being overly critical of yourself, otherwise, I already know what you think of my growth so far. XP
I really hope you don't cut it, Sean, but it is your hair.....I just know that it isn't easy to grow it over and over and never getting through to the good stuff. Better just to muscle through it once than to tentatively go at it a dozen times before success.
best of luck, whatever you choose.
Shawn (Mr.Crow)
I mean , Its your choice but in my honest opinion it looks great. Imagine hair like that at mid back length!!!
Great comments. I really appreciate it. Knowing me I procrastinate very easily, so it may be a couple of weeks untill I cut it. I think its enevitable but who knows. It really sucks cause I remember last june where I was so anxious for my hair to get longer. Oh well :)
Hi again, Sean.
Hopefully those two weeks before you cut will become two months, then two years, hopefully, NEVER! You mentioned that last June you could not wait for your hair to get longer, hopefully you will wait a while longer, just remember, the awkward phase does NOT last forever!
David
