i was just thinking about Red Indians and other tribal people throughout history,,,i dont think many of them were told apparently negative comments such as "Queer",or whatever, strange how attitudes change over time!..i was just reading MrHistorys bit that was all.
Byseps, you must remember that many Europeans wore long hair when America was "discovered." Also, the word "queer" had nothing to do with sexual orientation back then. It meant "strange" or "out of the ordinary." In that respect, a European explorer might definitely consider a Native American as queer. Yes, attitudes do change. Long hairs of the sixties and seventies faced much more negative comments. TLH
I'm going to get really boring here but people had tribes all over the world and they lived their lives with whatever fashions and tribal cultures they had. All of this was handed down verbally.
When xtianity arose, along with it came printing and those holy bibles were printed out, distruted and some people took it upon themselves to write about men and women having certain dress codes etc (and with that went the length of hair)
that stigma is still here in the west and was transported to the new world, you will find that bible-thumpers (as they are known here in the uk) have very strict dress codes for males and females (xtians, jews, muslims)
fashions come and go but for some people the printed ancient texts are what sticks in the mind, no-one can forget or ignore them because they are no longer verbal but are written down. In some peoples eyes that legitimises them
I suppose its just how you see it, personally i always look for the bigger picture :)
