One of the accused in the Aqua Teen incident that took place in Boston used his hair as a foil to rebuff reporters. He was doing it because he's a "crazy performance artist", but I think he actually said some things that this board might find relevant. He kept forcing them back on his desired topic--hair! In particular, hairstyles of the 70s. Sorry for those of you who don't have broadband. Maybe you can get somebody to burn it to CD for you (there are ways of doing this with flash vid, left as an excercise for the reader).

Yeah, I saw that today on The Feed. It's a tv show on G4 that talks about the latest in tech and pop culture news. When I saw him say that, I figured someone on the board would mention it. That guy is so hilarious :)
On a side note, I think the whole Aqua Teen incident was rather profound. It goes to show how terrorism has gotten into the psyche of Americans in big cities. Those little things seriously did not look like any sort of explosive devices...or maybe that's just because I watch Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and I recognized that they were depicting Ignignokt.
Sadly... the terrorists have won the war on terror. The terrorists would probably stop if we act like we're not scared.

You hit the "Nail right on the Head" with that statement !!
I have to inteject here since I live in the Boston area.
I'll start by pointing out the guy from Belarus changed his
tune today, he was all apologitic. That probably had to
do with a poll yesterday showing that 95% of respondents think
he should go to jail for a long time and then be deported.
I'd point out when you're on the bomb squad and something like
this comes along job #1 is to get home safely to your family at
night. So you approach something like this with the idea that
it is an explosive device and it will explode and take
out a 12 block radius. That is how you stay alive to see your
family tonight.
I'd also point out the old phrase from Kris Kristopherson, "Freedoms just another word for nothing left to
loose." These guys had no job, no family, they coudln't identify
with the poor slob who has to work for a living and got stuck
in trafffic for five hours on the highway.
These two clowns give us long hairs a bad name.
Oh and I'd add when they found these devices they also
found two real pipe bombs at NEMC and Longfellow bridge.
These cartoon figures were on a black box, if you're on the
bomb squad you must assume that black box will explode and
take out a dozen city blocks. To do otherwise would be suicide.
Unless you know these guys personally, that's some rather harsh statements to make. Meh..to each his own I guess. Personally, I wouldn't have minded waiting for 5 hours in traffic, because these guys are awesome. They took the media's out of control sensationalism and reversed it on them. Not to rag on your hometown dude, but I think it's a good possibility that the authorities in Boston are just trying to cover their asses. They are obviously a laughing stock right now, seeing as these ads were in multiple other cities and did not cause a hoopla. From what I understand, many of these ads were taken down by law enforcement agencies in New York City and Philadelphia with no mass hysteria. You would think that NYC would be the most paranoid city, eh? Well, apparently not.
Once this guy was caught and his placement of these things
were shown on his website we learned on the news everything
about this guy. He was paid $300 for this, had no
job, and did this with his roommate.
And as a working slob who at that time had to pay for this
(before Turner came forward to pick up the tab) I was not
at all pleased with the attitude they took.
If you were stuck in traffic for five hours you wouldn't be happy with these guys.

I did. Especially where I was on my way to work. (My boss
was not happy.)
I have to wonder how many got fired as a result of this.

I'm not a fan of Menino but he handled it well.
I'd have been even more ticked off if my house burned down
and someone died because the fire department couldn't get there.
Uhh nick last time I checked Boston does got a subway use it. Public transportation mostly skips all the traffic jams.
Until something like this shuts down the subway, all bus lines.
The first incident at Sullivan Square. It also shut down the
subway line, a number of bus lines. (the place where they found the device under Route 93 at Sullivan Square...it was at right
next the Sullivan Square MBTA station.
A number of the devices under various bridges led to the bus
lines being shut down.
The devices were put up by different guys in different cities. One of the reasons Bostonians freaked out was the guys in Boston chose a lot of terror-sensitive places like bridges. Not much has been said about where they were found in other cities, but one here in San Francicso was mentioned in the news, and it was just stuck to a building.
I agree with Nick that there are proper and improper ways to advertise. These devices, as well as posters which we see in most cities, junk mail we get from companies we never asked to mail us, and telemarketing calls, are really nothing more than spam.
"Publicity stunts" are a valid way to advertise when they don't inconvenience others. Here in San Francisco, we had one that definitely inconvenienced others. Two radio station DJs stopped on the Bay Bridge one morning while one gave the other a haircut. This blocked traffic for over an hour for many thousands of people, and their lost wages were several million dollars. The court settlement worked out well and was creative though - the radio station paid the money to the bridge and it was used to give everyone free tolls until it was gone! The money actually got back to the people who were harmed.
Bill
I understand that. Anytime a murder happens or an accident happens in the NEw York Subway they shut that line down, but not the whole system unless there is a terrorist threat.
That is hilarious, but he was following instructions. He was instructed not to discuss the details of the case by his defense attorney, who was standing next to him. And he did'nt, he talked about hair instead.

i love how these guys handled this. the case was a joke from the beginning. once confronted about the ads featuring the Mooninites, nothing was kept secret from authorities, yet the authorities escalated the situation out of control. it was just one of the many gorilla advertizing campaigns which are taking place these days. I hope the case ends here; turner agreed to pay the ~million dollars for the man hours applied to get the situation under control, i think that should be enough (and i think it might have been a great deal for them as it resulted in huge advertizing for ATHF.)
I followed the story quite a bit, while watching Anderson Cooper i heard them joke that the police should hire some "pot smoking" and "fig newton eating" collage students to be able to identify icons from such "awful shows" I found this hilarious! Offensive! im in my final 10 weeks of school and have only smoken pot once (which i found makes me really paranoid, not relaxed like i was told lol) and fig newtons are delicious... come on! (im just kidding.. not offended at all, in fact the stereotype holds for many ppl i know) anyways my point is that they too were joking around about this case as well and i really hope nothing happens to those two lads.

I have to disagree. As someone stuck in traffic for hours as
a result I think this guy from Belaruse should be in jail for
a long time and then get deported.
I was not amused.
I think they mayor and governor handled the situation the right way.
you were stuck in traffic because of a response to their actions that they did not intend to cause. is this your only argument behind why this guy should be jailed/deported? seems like kind of a harsh punishment for unintentionally slowing traffic flow. so whats next?.. the death penalty for double-parking?
I took lots of marketing clases in college. There are legit
avenues to market stuff. This ain't one of them.
Seems to me this a sorry excuse for marketers who are too
lazy to create a good marketing campaign through legit
channels.
You want to adverise to me? Buy ads on TV, on radio, in the
newspaper. Keeep your ads off my bridges, off my computer,
etc. Want to place ads legitimately at Sullivan Square? Buy
ads in the subway/bus vehiclle, on the buses, etc. But keep themn off the bridges which the taxpayer paid for.
Just because you want to advertise something doesn't give you
the right to put your ads anywhere you like.
I hate double parkers. They shoudl have their cars towed.
As someone who has had many a close call in the accident department i'd confiscate cars that are double parked.
I think the underlying problem is an age difference. From the comments I've heard and read, it appears that if you are < 30 you know all about the whole aquateen-moonite-whatever-they're-called cartoons, and if you are like me and around 50, which probably applies to the Boston "authorities" also, you are completely ignorant when it comes to current cartoons. The hostility seems to stem from one group taking offense at the other group's lack of appreciation of current cartoons, while the cartoon clueless are offended at the other group's seemingly lack of consideration for security.
Unfortunately, the real loosers will be the residents of some city where bombs go off (as in Madrid) and lots of people saw them but didn't do anything for fear of winding up looking foolish. And that could happen anywhere; not just in America.
I would have to agree. If you're under 30 you know this
cartoon but if you're like me you're 50+ you've never heard
of this cartoon. Also when I did marketing years ago
we had were very mindful of what was legal and ethical
to do. Geurilla marketing gets into an area of questionable
legality. When I first entered the field they used to cite
you illegal stuff like this.
Heck many cities/towns have very strict laws on size/shapes/
placement of ads/signs.
The video was awesome haha. I think the past is repeating itself. First there was the red scare and how everyone who did something questionable was a communist. Now we're having a terrorist scare where anyone who does something questionable is a terrorist. They handled that well, and managed to add some humor to the news lol. And Aqua Teen Hunger Force is pretty much one of the best cartoons ever IMO
People around here are on edge....maybe that has to do with
two of our planes crashing into the WTC.
Two of those planes took off from Logan.
They handled that well, and managed to add some humor to the news lol. And Aqua Teen Hunger Force is pretty much one of the best cartoons ever IMO
That maybe but I will flatly refuse to watch it or the Cartoon
Network.
Besides the last good cartoon I saw was Road Runner.
