I saw on Ripley's a long while back that there is this barber who cuts hair with a flame...Out of curiosity what on earth happens to the ends when their singed off rather than cut?
Ewww. Nothing is worse than burnt hair. Some african Americans singe their hair to tighten the braid but that is different.
I have seen footage like that too somewhere. Certainly something to be done by a trainde professional. While a rather smelly process, it might help hair by melting the tip so it is less likely to split than it would be if cut. Of course going uncut for years eventually gives you that protection and for free too. Less chance of accident as well.

Really? Please do tell more, Elizabeth. So, if I understand correcty, going without trims for a long time will eventually give you more resistance against splits? It's definitely an intriguing concept.
A hair shaft that has never been cut - that has grown from the scalp after the longest ends - will have a pointy end which is almost never going to split - so the theory goes.
Yep, that's it. Don't know how much of a bonus there is but from experience cutting off splits they predominantly look unpointed, either boken off or cut for an earlier split. When I catch a split in a pointed hair it usually begns higher up the hair shaft, a side split rather than on the end so I do see a benefit. Back when I had one side of my hair cut and the other uncut a comparison the amount of splits would have been interesting.
The number of splits is going to vary from person to person anyway depending on their hair treatment or thickness of strands so leaving hair uncut might not make a difference for some. Hair can be split resistant aleady or hopelessly trashed beyond any benefit a pointed end can provide. Unless the uncut look is desired (and it would take years to have a head of never cut hairs) there are other was to reduce splits in hair that can be utilized at any time such as oiling hair ends to provide moisture or using silicone hair care products.
