Hey all - Time for an update. Hit the 1 1/2 year mark last week from a no-guard shaved head. I've had some bad hair days of late but today it was manageable so thought I'd go for it. I brushed it for the photo which frizzes it out so it is actually longer than it looks but that's the way it is for us wavy/thick haired guys. My Avatar was taken at about the 16 mo. mark so there's not too much difference noticeable. I've also been growing the goat lately and sporting some Elvis burns (long live the King.) I'm pleased with how it all looks and enjoying the feel of my hair on my neck and shoulders. Looking forward and committed to keeping it growing! Bruce'ster
Hey man
Looks awesome! I love the elvis sideburns you're sporting. They look great. Your hair has definitely made some excellent progress. It is much longer and has great volume. Thanks for sharing.
Good luck and keep it growing!
chris
Thanks Chris - Just checked your link and you've got some nice thick locks growing yourself man, only without the grey! Well, I guess you can't have everything, Ha Ha. Peace - Bruce'ster
Hey, Bruce, don't fret the gray! Gray hair is awesome on a guy of our age - anything else looks fake anyhow. [grin] It's always great to see another guy with the gray a growin'!
And your mane and beard growth are so thick, and look great, too!
Bill
Hey there Bill - I like the way you put that, "with the gray a growin!" And you're right, anything else would be fake; not the authentic me. Glad to be one of the gray haired guys around here. My hats off to your hair and beard as well brother. Bruce'ster
Hi there Bruce, everything is looking MIGHTY fine there! The hair is so awesome and thick, looks good and healthy. The goatee is looking good as well, any plans for a full beard? We have quite a fistful of guys starting beards these days, I have the first one in my entire life. Do you have a final length in mind for your hair?
Keep up the great growth,
David
Hey David. Thanks buddy. Actually I've been pretty frustrated with the Frizz Factor lately but today it calmed down a bit. I never saw that pic of your beard but read some of the scuttlebut. Maybe I'll scroll down and try to find it. Don't think I'll grow a full one right now. I'm keeping the "goat" but when spring rolls around I'll probably shave it to get some sun on the ole' mug. When my beard gets long (being so white) I usually get the "you look so old now" comments. Still being single (and still looking) I figure I need all the help I can get. (That does not include cutting my hair though)However, in the past I've had some righteous beards and you, Oren, Absalon and some of the other guys have got me thinkin'. Peace - Bruce'ster
If you attract your mate without a beard, you attract the mate who doesn't care for them. If you attract the mate with the beard, you have attracted the mate that appreciates the beard and probably means that she likes them. By staying shaved, it seems you might be setting your self up for an eventual conflict of interests when it comes to beards, no? It seems a little tricky, perchance, to change that part of yourself that you like (and is harmless), attract the mate in your changed state, and then, in hopes of reverting (unconsciously or consciously) to what you were, find that the attractee is thus unattracted.
Good point indeed! Truth be told I'd love to grow a knarly beard. I'd be "concerned" about the reaction at work, being a teacher, though I don't think they could actually force me to cut it off. And dating is also an important consideration, though I've never actually had a woman tell me she wouldn't date me because of my beard. Actually I did have an x-fiance who tried to control me every chance she got but notice I said "X-fiance." Ha! Bruce'ster
Hi again, Bruce, I just posted a 22 day beard picture below. I am not quite in Absalom/Oren territory but maybe SOME day, lol! Jeffrey had missed my beard update 2 weeks back (he specifically asked earlier for me to keep him updated on beard) so I put a fresh one up for him, the picture is just a little ways down the board. My earlier 10 day beard update is WAY down the board, don't bother trying to find that one as it is out of date anyway. I plan to get Oren to change my avatar, perhaps you could use a new one, with beard, as well! I guess I am still single myself, perhaps SOME day to that as well! (But she has to like long hair on guys, no haircuts allowed, lol!)
Let's keep everything growing!
David
Hey David - I found it. Looks great! Seems you will have a really thick mustache. By that I mean the distance between your upper lip and nose is fairly wide. That will make a nice thick caterpillar of a stash! My Dad had similar features. He was a Navy man and only once did I ever see him grow a mustache. It was during a summer vacation and only about 3 weeks old but he looked kind of like a Mexican Bandit. Anyway, I like the way yours "softens" your facial features. Looking forward to watching it grow. By the way, forgot to answer your question re: my goal. I'd like to have a long mid-back ponytail. Hope it grows that long and stays thick too. Bruce'ster
Thanks Bruce!
I am generally happy with my beard and moustache progress and thickness. What is a little puzzling is that the moustache is a lot lighter than the beard.
I was really impressed with your ponytail thickness, I'm seriously jealous! I noticed you only needed two twists of the tie to hold it. My ponytail is much thinner. I require 4 turns of the tie to hold it firmly, if I use 3 turns, the tie slides down. I would die to have hair as thick as yours!
All the best,
David
Mornin'David - If you want to talk about lightness just look at my hair (and beard.) My hair is many different shades and colors. And as my hair gets longer more of the natural color comes out. I wonder if that is true for other guys with gray hair. Anyway, guess that is part of the fun of growing out your facial fur for the first time. You don't exactly know yet what it'll look like week by week. Thanks for the remarks about the ponytail. You are very observant to notice the tie was only wrapped twice! I don't like it tight cause if feels like it is pulling and thus breaking the hair. My tie will eventually slide too, like yours. When it does I just (gently) rewrap it. As it gets longer is doesn't slide as much. The GOOD NEWS is that I'm finally at that stage in my growth again after (the mistake of) cutting it last time. The best is yet to come! Bruce'ster
This is a good update. You have definitely come a long way in a year and a half! The goatee looks excellent too. I have to say that I like the multiple colors you have going on too. Blond, silvery white, and darker brown all work well together to create an over-all favorable appearance. It's so great too that you have had no real problems with your school administrators - that's a blessing. Cool shirt and necklace as well.
Here is to another year and a half! Skaal!
And, you resemble, just a little, Kris Kristofferson. It came to mind just now - reminding me of him in the "Blade" movies.
Bragi
Thanks Bragi - Funny you noticed the multiple colors in my hair. One of my students last week was standing behind me and she said, "did your hair used to be brown?" Actually it used to be reddish brown and my beard had a lot of red too. The longer my hair gets the more color comes out. My administrator has never said anything negative about my hair but it's getting pretty "wild" now that it is longer. We had a parent night recently and I tied it up so as not to "rock the boat" too much. And yeah I've heard the Kris Kristofferson thing many times. Ci- Bruce'ster
You look a lot wiser with a beard.
looking good there, nice mane and beard you have there.
hope you keep it all growing.
Bruce'ster
And what an update it was. Fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!
The long hair and beard look great!
Looking fantastic and I love the white "highlights". The bread suits you.
Try just a drop or two of Jojoba oil (which is apparently a wax). Just a small amount rubbed on you hands, then on the surface of your hair. Brush it through and you will be amazed at the control over the frizzies.
Good Luck and Thanks for Sharing

WHOOPS
bread should be beard
Hey White Tail - Thanks for the advice. I've been using olive oil once a week as a treatment and then washing it out. I looked for Jojoba oil today but being Sunday the usual stores weren't open so I settled on some carrot tea-tree oil. It is a blend of too many oils to list here inc. olive, castor, salflower, cucumber etc. I tried some and like it so far. Bruce'ster!
Hey, your hair, goatee and sideburns go really good together and look really great! Keep 'em growing
-Mihnea
Looks great Bruce! You're blessed with a nice full thick head of hair. I think the sideburns and gotee make you look distinguished. I try to let my burns creep down but my wife prefers them higher. She also prefer shorter hair so I give in on the burns to be at peace.
Take care,
Bruce
hey bro,you look a lot better with the beard IMO.and the hair is lookin ace..love the different shades!!take care :))
I really love your hair, man. You got an old school Ric Flair thing going with it and also with the beard you look a lot like Kris Kristofferson, which is awesome.
You have really wonderful hair, Bruce. I hope you never consider cutting it.
Mouse
Hey Bruce,
Awesome hair, dude. I hope mine is as thick as yours when it turns gray. You have a totally cool look with the goatee and your long hair. I hope you grow your hair as long as possible.
Jason
Looks very nice Bruce!
I like the goat too!
- Oren
Damn! Bruce Almighty, that is a great look! Anyone who, 6 months ago, was giving you grief about your long hair MUST, by now, see the light, right? The facial hair is also highly complimentative and rounds out the look. I think you have come a long way in the time I've been here, at least, and I think that more is yet to come.
I wonder what you hair would look like with a wet, shake, finger style, air dry routine.... the thickness of it is very reminiscent of my own when I finger comb it while it is straight and then use a pic or wide-toothed brush on it. It will eventually go straight-ish (longer hair will assitst gravity in this, for me) and when it does, it has the same thickness as yours. So, what does yours look like before the brushing?

Hey Shawn - BTW I love that movie! Thanks for the support. It sure helps to hear it since, as you know, we often don't get it (or get just the opposite.) Yeah I feel the last 6 months have brought on many changes. And just by coincidence I bought a new wide tooth comb yesterday having lost my last one. When I dry it as you suggested and use a comb it has more ringlets. They're not as tight as yours but much more obvious and curly compared to when it is brushed. I also tried some carrot tea-tree oil this weekend and it makes the hairs "bind" together into small curls rather than frizz. I didn't really like the feel of the oil but it was my first try other than treating it and then washing it out. Actually I wasn't that happy with that post picture. I was trying to get it looking good but once I brushed it, it started getting out of control and at that point you've lost it. Maybe I'll post a pic without brushing. Hopefully the camera resolution will show the detail. Yes, the best is yet to come for us all! Bruce'ster
Wooaaahhhh Brucie Baby!!
You look fantastic, really, really cool!!
