HI,
I was curious to know, is hair straightening good? I was planning on getting my hair straightned once it gets to like a shoulder length. Any tips will be appreciated..
Thanks guys
Shyam
Hi Shyam,
Personally, I would AVOID the straightening, I got into that trap for a year and a half and did a LOT of damage, only now is my hair recovering after sworn off straightening for 4 1/2 months. It does have to be your choice, but if you want really long, undamaged hair rather than only semi long, damaged, hair, avoid the straighteners.

There is a thing i dont understand, straightening DO damage hair , but how munch ?
most of my female classmates use straightener regulary but they have shiny and healthy looking hair, even their hair are not vey long (about shoulder).
so maybe modern straightener use with low setting wont damage hair that munch ?

Heat from the straightners will damage hair over time, making it rough and even break off.
Used with heat protector spray and not used every day it will be fine to use them.
Use moderation and you should be fine with them.
Straighteners are like crack-you don't notice the damage until you STOP using them.plus,I'm pretty sure these girls aren't telling you that they have to get frequent trims cause of the split ends caused by straighteners...:((
I totally agree with Jacob that straighteners are like crack, all you want is that perfect, straight look, but the price is high. In fact, I was sure I had reached terminal length last year while using them, I think I was causing so much damage that the ends were breaking off and my hair didn't seem to grow. (I ALWAYS saw broken hairs in the sink, I was so hooked on these things that I didn't have the sense to stop even when noticing this) Strangely, you don't really notice that your hair is being damaged at the time you are using them (the damage is hidden somewhat by the straight look), it is when you stop using them that you realize how much damage has been done. I do admit that I knew very little about long hair care for the 1 1/2 years that I used them, I did not used protective products on my hair and I used fairly high heat. I stopped using them in September when I discovered the MLHH.

I don't recomend them, your hair is amazing as is, your hair has so much volume, thats what makes it so awesome, and when you straighten your hair it kills the volume and alot of time makes it look "stringy".
David's correct in saying that it will damage your hair. I straightened mine quite a bit throughout most of late 2005-early 2006 when I tried growing it out the first time and that was a big mistake. I had to cut it because of such bad split ends and overall dryness. Even though it may seem like your hair is a mess or overly curly, it'll only get worse if you use a straightener.

I have heard and read about this straightening method called the Yuko system. Apparently it doesn't damage your hair at all. All you need is touchups every 6-8 months. I have read a lot of reviews and everything suggests that it's not that risky.
Straightening can do damage but a lot of people I know straighten regularly without any issue. I think we're a little paranoid here. It's your hair. There's no point in NOT straightening it, if it will make you happy. If you straighten it and love it, then go for it!
Don't let your hair leave you unhappy just because it could possibly be damaged. If you're unhappy with it (not-straightened), you're just going to waste your time. Even if it became damaged - which IMO is a pretty remote possibility unless you're excessive about it - it will grow back if you cut it.
Do what makes you happy. life is too short. If curly, unruly hair isn't your thing, STRAIGHTEN IT.
