Righto, basically I've been growing my hair for 17 months or so by not cutting it at all, and in my opinion it's coming on really well. It's about 8-9" now, and the back of it is about an inch below my shoulders and is straight under it's own weight I think (my hair is straight anyway). But here's the problem, from right at the front of my head, either side of where it parts, and to about half way around the side it's not down to my shoulders so it's not weighted down. This causes the ends of it to curl upwards a bit when my hair is down (by that I mean not tied back, and in about 1.5 months I'll have a ponytail without having to pin the front back close to the tying), and I think it looks and feels horrible. Is there any way I can stop it without having to use straightening irons?
Thanks in advance ^_^
There are products you can buy that will turn your hair bone straight, but I think a curling iron may be the only way to go if you want any control over how straight your hair winds up.
Thanks for the very fast replies :)
I don't want to spend too much money on straightening irons 'cause it'll only be like it for another few months ( I know 'cause the back of my hair was like it untill it reached my shoulders)
I'm just looking for a quick-fix I suppose.
If you use a straightener the hair will be badly damaged...
Hi Kanden,
Chemical straigtening has been used to straighten, but it can be even MORE harmful than a straightening iron! Speaking as a chemist, the strongest forms of chemical straightening contain sodium hydroxide which is an extremely corrosive chemical that is the chief component of Drano. This chemical actually alters hair by dissolving it and can literally destroy hair (think of what it does to the clog in your bathroom sink!), it may straighten hair but it will probably be damaged beyond repair. The other forms of straightening listed in the site that Nyghtfal mentioned are less harsh, but even the second one involves a base, a milder form of the sodium hydroxide that is indicated in the strongest method. I don't know about how harmful the final one is, but remember that anything that forces hair into an un-natural state will probably cause damage.
Why not just let your hair be natural? The curling ends will smooth to some degree as hair gets longer, but there is really nothing wrong with them, not everyone has perfectly straight hair. Remember, if you want REALLY long hair, it has to last for years.
Hope this helps,
David
Yea thats like straightening your hair with sulphuric acid. If you get Sodium Hydroxide on your skin it burns you... if you mix it with certain metal it produces hydrogen and when it hits a spark or a source of ignition... BOOM!
Perms are perfectly safe as is relaxing hair curls. As long as you do not have any metallic salts in your hair, or very very damaged hair. That is the only time it should not be carried out.
You could try blow-drying these sections straight - if necessary, dampen them down each day (just put your brush/comb under the tap - that will provide enough water) and dry them straight again. Hair takes its shape in the drying process and blow-drying won't damage your hair as long as you keep it moving and don't overheat your hair. A small squirt of hairspray might help once you've dried it.
My bangs are almost chin length at the moment and I have to do this to them often to stop them going their own way even though my hair is naturally straight.
Alternatively, if these bits are nearly long enough to go into a pony tail are they not long enough to simply tuck behind your ears?
I will have to for now, untill they straighten themselves out. When my hair is tied back, I use bobby pins to keep my bangs out of the way, else all of my hair tied back with those hanging down the side of my head makes them look silly.
Thanks for the all the info, guys :)
