I got tired of free service because I need sendmail and free services wont offer them unless you verify tons of ID (which is impossible for me because who in America understands Chinese?) so I decided to sign up with a pay host. however my domain wont be available for about 2 days so in the mean time use the link below to access my site. The site is www.rawfisheaters.com
I plan to add guestbooks and a way of sending email without my addresses being compromised by spammers... maybe someone who is well versed in perl could help out...?

Good idea!
Good luck!
you know I want to set up a guestbook but im not sure how to do this, I want to be able to say if certain words were posted it gets red flagged for analysis. I dont want to just have it where the guest book is open posting to prevent spammers from posting random stuff...
They have blog programs that allow you to control what gets posted to your blog.
I have seen programs that need your approval for each and every post. If you look around you will find them.
If the program does not e-mail you whenever a post is made, of course you can modify it so that it does. That way you don't have to check it all the time. This makes sense if you get a few posts a week or less. If you get lots of posts every day, it's less of an imposition to check your web site than it is to get the e-mails.

Hostgator appears to give you all the features you need. A lot of hosts don't, so you're in good shape there. Now you just have to learn to do stuff. [grin]
If you get packaged scripts you will likely not be happy with them completely, so you'll need to learn how to program anyway. Get a good Perl book if you're going to use Perl.
Keeping spammers out is a cat and mouse game. With a mail form they won't get your e-mail address, but there are spammer programs out there that will automatically fill out the form. If you can't morph the program as years go by, you will eventually be getting spam. We really have the same issues here with the MLHH web board. I've probably made a dozen software changes over the years here to keep spammers out.
You will need to know how to program in Perl and also how to use the SSH shell, so get a book on Linux or Unix too.
The good news is you're in no hurry. You can track down and install free packaged scripts. Just go into the project knowing that you won't be fully happy with them, and that you'll be wanting to learn how to modify them as time goes by. You can learn as you go.
Have fun!
