Interesting, true enough --- but there always the extremist nutjobs out there with their wild views in this day and age and Baptists are a classic example of that.
Chris, pay no attention to these Pharisaic literalists, who in fact interpret Scripture to justify their own prejudices.
I am a retired pastor in a mainline church with an honours degree in New Testament and Church History from the University of Sydney in Australia.
While it is not my personal point of view, a case can be made on the biblical texts that it is improper for men and women to deliberately seek to look like the opposite sex and confuse others as to their real identity.
As for the charge about the reasons for a supposed increase in sodomy! They obviously have no understanding of the factors determining a person's sexual orientation. Long hair is NOT one of them. BTW I'm straight & married.
One of the features of this site I appreciate is its inclusiveness - straight and gay, hippies and rockers, teens experimenting, even a couple of transsexuals let alone a great bunch of female admirers.
Congratulations on maintaining this open acceptance of all with the one interest - long hair.: http://www.solidrockfaith.com/long_haired.html

Should that be a sin?

Don't ministers find it rather ODD that Paul--who uses the word "sin" many times
has, in this quote, chose to use the word 'shame"?
Many things can be 'a shame' without being a sin. This quote has been misunderstood for centuries.
I guess thats why they are called "rock solid faith" because its like a brick wall... all it takes is an earthquake and they will all crumble.
all it takes is an earthquake and they will all crumble."
I like it!
I think those people are banging their heads against that wall. They're dazed and confused:-)

This is an example of a bible passage lifted out of context and used to advance a social agenda.
This happens often. The quoted passage is taken from the apostle Paul's first letter to the Greek Christians at Corinth (1st Corinthians). The letters (epistles) of which 1 Corinthians is one, are the earliest texts that were eventually incorporated into what became the new testament of the bible about 3 centuries later. The letters were written at various times in the few decades after the death of Jesus, usually thought to have been in the 30s. The first gospel, Mark, was written around the year 70. the first letter to the Corinthians is full of advice on behavior, including how to behave in assembly. One must understand that the early Greek Christians (but the term Christian came into use later) faced the task of living with the wider non-Christian Greek society. Paul advised them to conform wherever possible in order to achieve some degree of harmony. The quoted passage that is used to attack modern day long hair is part of a longer passage of advise on existing with other Greeks. Short hair was common in Greek society at that time. Paul was merely advising the fledgling Greek Christian community at Corinth to do the same to avoid needless conflict. To lift this out of context and use it to bludgon men today into getting their hair cut is mindlessly ridiculous and absurd.
What the quote says:
"Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?"
What it does NOT say:
"Doth not God teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a sin unto him?"
BIG DIFFERENCE!
By the way, doth not nature teach that if a mancutteth not his hair...
...it WILL grow LONG?!
Paul was definitely referring to something longhaired men were doing in certain countries under certain situations that were
taking place IN THOSE DAYS.
Jewish men of those days--according to the best research--indicates that they wore their hair in a braited tail that was
kept tucked up in a turpin--except on special holidays.
No doubt Jesus also had such a hairstyle, so Paul was not referring specifically to the hair itself.
try turban...
This article is awesome.
This is my favorite part:
"The unisex trend is a device of Satan to break down and blur the mark of distinction that God instituted between the sexes. Satan means to make women ape men , and men ape women"
Satan is all about the ape people.
"Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have
long hair, it is a shame unto him?" (1. Corinthians 11:14)
HOW and WHAT does 'nature' teach?
I can only think of two things that nature "teaches' us:
1. That about half the men on this planet go bald.
2. That if a man doesn't touch his hair, 'nature' will grow it down to who knows where.
Now, if God had intended for a man's hair to be short, then WHY
doesn't it just STOP growing at a certain length and then
only "freaks of nature" would have long hair??
Okay, so let's keep this going...
1. In Biblical times it was a SHAME for men to shave off their beards.
So WHY isn't it still a shame today? WHY? Tell me WHY!
WHY isn't shaving off a beard considered "feminizing"???
2. Isn't it also considered a SHAME if a man doesn't cut his fingernails
because in many societies it's considered feminine. So is that a sin too? Tell me true.
3. Oh, and how about body hair? Is it a SHAME for a man to remove any of that?
So let's see if I get the whole picture, sir...
A man should NOT grow the hair on his head because he might look feminine...
but it's perfectly okay to shave off his beard? (But wouldn't
that make him look more masculine?)
Did you forget that in Old Testament King David sent his men
into hiding after the enemy had shaved off their beards?
And that they had to stay in hiding until their beards grew back out?
So being 'beardless' was definitely considered to be a 'SHAME'
back then...but not now? Why?
And I suppose you would also agree a man should also keep his
toenails short because having long toenails would be a SHAME
but not necessarily a sin, because you think it's just plain yucky?
And what about body hair? Is it a shame--or a sin--for a man to remove any of that? Inquiring minds want to know.
And one more thing: would I be mistaken in claiming that most murderers,
rapists and thieves happen to be short haired, clean shaven men
with short fingernails?
I would appreciate it if you would take the time to point out any false
assumptions I may have made...
and let me know what is right or wrong, what is a shame or a sin
and what is okay and what is damnable.
Thank you.
Your logic is demonic, you must be one of Satan's ape people, be gone! lol
Life........The cosmic joke..
I don't get why they made up these silly rules in the first place. It must be a horrible way to live your life, following such nonsense.
My mom didn't seem to mind it much, but I never was able to accept the concept of believing that some deity existed according to some people and that it is important to acknowledge said deities existance, and that this deity made up strange rules pertaining to things that don't affect the natural order adversely.
Making a species of animal go extinct is A-OK, women can run around with their heads shaved and wear mens clothing, but a man with long hair should be shunned and beaten! o_O
Yeah, I'm probably not the first to tell you that humanity has chosen to damn themselves. At least I can see through their pointless ruse and live life by my own code of ethics. Earth was probably a wonderful place until humans came to town and brought war. :P
I've always said that these religious fanatics are very dangerous. If they ever attain enough power, life on earth will be a living hell. That is for the people that they let live. I think that many of these "religious" men are gay and they have repressed feelings concerning that. Actually, there are some studies that strongly suggest, or, even prove as much. I think that they find long hair on a man attractive (as I do) and they don't know how to handle that and it confuses them. My advice to these religious quacks would be this: If you see a guy with long hair and he turns you on, then talk to him and if you feel that he is gay then ask him out! Gezzzz...Why don't these guys just get over it.

Where does it state in the bible that a "Man's" haircut shall be: short and squared off in the back, short and above the ears on the sides, and short on top??????? Do we have to assume this is the haircut God wants for guys?
