Hello,
I have entered a very awkward stage of growing my hair. It is nearing the end of the nape close to the shoulders in back and the sides are finally covering my ear. My bangs when combed down my face reach past my mouth in the middle but still above on the sides because I have a small recession. My question is should I cut the back up to a length close to my sides and bangs or let it grow then at another time I may need a bigger haircut. I am very confused right now. If you e-mail I have a pic I will share thats a month old I would appreciate anyone that can help me link this pic to my name . I am 40 and I want to grow my hair out and if someone can help me deal with this stage I would appreciate it
I think it's best to just leave it, getting bits cut off while growing it is kinda contradicting yourself.
Welcome
there is one very simple rule of growing ones hair. do not let scissors or clippers (arghh) near it for three years.
there will be moments of despair but length is not born of cutting.
Just let it keep growing, and do what you have to do to keep it out of the way. I wore baseball caps. Lots of sympathy for this worst annoying hair stage.
Cutting it just makes the stage last longer.
Men's hair, if given time to grow and kept neatly will eventually reach a naturally long state.
And that natural state is incredibly sexy and attractive, the way we were meant to be seen.
The following was taken at random from a discussion board about long hair. Lots of BAD advice! I posted it just to show you how much
misinformation is floating around out there.
(By the way...Undercuts, thinning out hair and frequent trims are the WORST things
you could possibly do if your goal is to grow great-looking
hair as quickly as possible.)

Hi,
Reading the post below about styling products I realise that
some of you guys are doing the same with your hair as I want to
for summer.
I'm currently trying to let it get into a bit longer style like
I've seen a lot of guys with lately from a previous
short/messy style, but as I haven't had it cut for a couple of
months its getting pretty thick and annoying at the sides/back
and there's really nothing much I can do to style it properly
if I'm going out.
I'm thinking about going somewhere to get it cut a bit next
week but not too sure what sort of thing to ask for in the way
of a decent style without them cutting it really short again?!
Was just wondering what sort of thing other folk asked for or
how they style their hair to make it look decent for going out
etc?
Cheers for the help! ~Paul M.

Trying to go the old long hair style? I have semi-long hair at
the minute (used to be past shoulders, then the school I go to
MADE me get it cut or get suspended...)
If your trying to grow it long, it'll take more than a couple
of months, even maybe a year to get proper length, this is the
best way to get it cut/trimmed for the best look:
When it starts growing, the back will grow the fastest, and
it'll look like you will be sporting a kinda of mullet look,
except after a few weeks, it'll start growing outwards and
getting thicker, this is natural, just when it becomes a bit
too "otwardsy", go in and ask them to cut it in and to "thin
the hair out". They will simply take a few layers off of it,
leaving it the same length, yet less puffy.
The sides of your hair will be the 2nd fastest at growing,
these dont really need to be cut as much.
The frindge is the worst, and takes ages to grow... I had to
get mine done up past my eyebrows (used to be down past my
chin), and that was around 3 months ago, now its just a tiny
bit down past my eye brow... go figure... When you start
growing your fringe, make SURE to part it in the middle,
otherwise, whenever you go out, it will take more work to get
it parted if you just kept it straight accross when growing it.
Get it thinned every maybe 4-5 months, use Head and shoulders
and a good conditioner and you hair will be silky as mine in no time!

I have been thinking the same. I am bored of having the same
short, spike messy hair as I have always had (and everyone has)
so I have been growing it in for a while.
Its a good idea to go to a decent hairdresser and tell them you
are growing it but you want it styled/tidied up.
I had mine done yesterday. My hair is really thick so I need it
thinned otherwise I cant do anything with it. I just said I
was growing it longer without any particular style in mind.
She then did her thing and im pretty happy with the result. ~Jock19

I'm in the same club of growing hair longer but only to about 1 1/2
inch over the ears. Thing is it really hard to style it in the
morning as my hair is thik & wavy.
I'm after the hairstyle with the side swept fringe and wavered
back & sides but the top is getting really dense now. Can i get
it thinned without loosing any or much length on the back &
sides especially. ~Johnni

Hi, may be I can help, my hair is almost to my chin, used to
have an undercut at school, since I left grew my hair from
undeneath too. An undercut is so teenage schoolboy.
With long hair you have three options; undercut, small undercut
and same length all around.
1) With the undercut, they trim the hair on the sides, this
means your hair can go yet not be messy around the ears. You
can grow the lower part once your happy with the length of the
long hair. Do not bother with it, takes too long
2) With a small undercut, means they only trim a small part
above the ear to the neck line, this keeps it clean around the
ears, while most your hair can be left to grow. About an inch
above the ear is enough, do not go for anything more.
3) Get it cut the small length all-around but you will need
to visit your hairdresser often to clean the ear area. ~JustThe5

I would just leave it alone. I have a receding hairline that is so advanced that it looks like some kind of a grinder went down the sides of my head, but I didn't cut my hair and it turned out ok. It just takes a long time. As the hair gets longer it will hide the receding hairline to some extent.
