Hello ,
I am growing my hair out and pretty new to this board but today I received 3 different reactions 2 good 1 bad and I want to know how everyone deals with the reactions that are negative. I wantto know if family or friends gave negative reactions or still give negative reactions to your hair. I also do not know how to link a pic to the site so if anyone can help me I would love the help because I want to give updates.
On a seperate subject that was on the board was smoking and hair. I read that when people smoke the blood gets thicker and will to facilitate circulation cut off non necessary circulation which means the capillaries to the hair shafts arte cut off first. I also read that smoking leaves hard metals in the hair which will cause shorter life span .
Hi Rich,
Every now and then I still get negative comments, anymore I just say "if you don't like it don't look at it". I am at the point in my life that I just don't want to hear others opinions about my appearance. It is none of their business.
To load a single picture, you can upload it by using the last box "Upload it: If the photo is on your computer:" when you post a message. If you want to upload multiple pictures you can use a free pic hosting site like photobucket.com.
The smoking stuff, I now nothing about.
...yeah right!!!
I appreciate the advice
sorry if I came across as rude, didn't mean to..
as far as comments go,I only remember receiving 2 comments from people in real life.:((one from my supervisor, saying she liked my curls, and one from my former roommate, who said I look like a "hippie" (although that's more of a slur than an actual comment about the hair,I don't mind being called a hippie even though I'm not one)
my family hasn't seen me yet with long hair,I started growing my hair out when I relocated from Greece (they live in Greece).
I don't really know how I would react to negative comments,I guess it depends who's saying it and what they actually say!!
as far as the smoking goes..I was told it triggers MPB..
...yeah right??? You no believe me brother?
Hey man - Well, as Tom Petty says, "It takes RHINO SKIN." You can't worry too much about the negative crap. My family is split; some dig my hair, others don't. What bugs me is that alot of people make comments without being asked. For some reason people seem to think they can just blurt out their opinion. It's just plain rude. One thing is for sure, it will test your resolve, and in the long haul develop character. Meanwhile your hair will be growing longer and longer and those negative comments will be a distant memory! I tell you what man, it takes a weak person to criticize someones looks and a strong person to not take their remarks to heart. I have found that the longer my hair has become, the less negative and positive remarks i have recieved. The reason for the much smaller amount of remarks is that people realized that my hair is not a "fad" and that it is now part of me. People (including myself) picture me with my hair when they think about me.
Just keep your head high keep on growing to your desire.
peace

I get all sorts of comments on my appearance and my attire, and the hair is only one cause among the others. I have had to put up with these things for a long time and I have grown a very thick skin (well - much of it is fat anyway...) and they don't bother me any longer. The most important thing is that my SO likes me as I am and would kill me if I would cut my hair...
If it is your family that give you flak about your hair then try to reason with them. If you are over 18 then they should have no say in it.
Years ago my parents were nagging me about my hair (and beard); eventually I emailed to them Bill's essay on "Being a Longhair" and had them understand that this was not something that I was willing to make any concessions on.
With strangers it's much easier - just ignore them, or throw a stinging reply to them.
Smoking does so much damage to virtually every part and system of your body that hair damage is the least of a smoker's concerns.

A Linux Longhair
Well I was lucky enough to generally have great support growing my hair. My mother is probably my biggest supporter as she seems to really like the way I look with long hair. In fact the majority of negative reactions I get come from people I would never expect it. I was once made fun of while standing in line at a rock concert (go figure) some friends of my family give me the occational grief about it (though more in a joking manner) and most of them had long hair most of their life.
On of the best reactions was from my room mate who constantly gave me negative reations towards my hair, until one day she completely reversed herself and decided she really liked the way my hair looked one me.
For the most part I just brush off the negatives (and after a while when people become used to seeing you with long hair they stop caring, or voicing their oppinion as much) and I try to embrace the positive. I'm not sure if I actually get more positive reactions then negative, but they're the ones I remember the most.
I just don´t give a damn. So far, the only good reaction I´ve got about growing my hair out is from my bro and a friend. So far, they don´t mention my hair but it´s still short.
If they´ll start commenting on how bad it looks in the future, I´ll just tell them straight up that I don´t want to hear their oppinions. They are of course allowed to think whatever they want, it´s a free country, but I don´t want to hear it unless it´s something positive.
Hi Rich,
Welcome aboard, I'm so glad you have discovered us, you will find a great community of very supportive people here.
The best way to deal with negative comments is to simply ignore them, all of us growing our hair deal with these comments from time to time and have to deal with them. It is a small price to pay for what can be a very rewarding experience of growing long hair. It's great you're getting positive comments as well!
Smoking is definitely not good for long hair or health in general, I have never smoked myself so I don't have any first hand knowledge.
To post pictures, there are two methods. When you make a post, you will notice a box which is labelled "upload it". Simply copy the location of the picture you want posted and paste it into the box, this will enable you to post ONE picture per post. To post multiple pictures, you will need to set up a location on the internet (such as Photobucket) where you can store the pictures, then you can copy the URL's of the pictures to your post, this is explained better in the technical FAQ's, as you will need to use some codes on each side of your URL to enable the pictures to show.
Hope this helps, and WELCOME!
David
The only negative comments I have ever received regarding my hair were from my mom many years ago when I first started growing it. I never got a negative comment from anyone besides her. And now my parents don't mention it and I've had my hair past shoulder length for about 7 years now. I've received a lot of positive comments though through the years. I guess I've been lucky or something.
