What's the best way to detangle wet hair, should i wait until it's dry and then comb with a wide tooth comb or just keep on detangling the whole time until it's totally dry, also can i use the wide tooth comb in the shower to distribute the conditioner or is that damaging for the hair?
Sometimes it seems like my hair gets curlier if i don't detangle when it's wet.
I'll be happy to hear some tips from you:)

Hi Simon,
Actually, I gently remove the excess water with a towel so the hair is not dripping wet, then apply a small amount of leave in conditioner. (I currently use Garner Fructis Smoothing milk). After working this through my hair, I gently comb with a wide tooth comb to remove any tangles, and let air dry the rest of the way (around 2 hours), trying not to disturb too much until thoroughly dry. I then finish by checking for any more tangles with fingers (finger combing), and finally combing with a wide tooth comb to smooth things out. I do my routine in the evening due to insufficient time in the morning. Hope this helps.

It really depends on your hair. I can't detangle wet...it just doesn't work. So I wrap it in a microfiber towel for a bit which sucks most of the water out, then let it air dry. Once it is dry, I will finger detangle and then finish with a fine toothed comb.
I also do a full detangle and comb prior to washing, so I do very little shedding in the shower.
My hair isn't long yet, but I like to comb it in the shower when it's coated in conditioner. Seems to make it much easier to work with once I'm out of the shower (where I comb it again while wet).

thats what I do, only I use my hands instead of a comb.
If the tangle isn't serious I would use my finger to gently work them out, otherwise use conditioner or a oil of some kind. To avoid tangles in the future brush or comb your hair frequently... I comb it right after shampoo to help the hair stay streamlined and avoid tangles.
Just think about it. Putting a wide tooth comb through your hair is as damaging as putting your hands through it. I.e not damaging.
My experience with curly hair tells me that my hair can only be detangled while it is wet. However, I have heard that it is easier and better to wait until straight hair is dry before combing or brushing. I asked a girl once with straight, waist-length hair if this was true. She said that she only combed or brushed her hair after it had dried.
As for combing in the shower to distribute conditioner, I tried this once, and the results were negligible -- no greater amount of conditioner was spread than if I had done it by hand.
I am surprised that no one mentioned that it is important to start at the bottom of your hair when detangling.....otherwise, you can tighten tangles into knots.
I have fine hair which is curly when wet. I find using conditioner, then detangling with either fingers or a wide tooth comb (very gently) works well for me.
Good Question

It seems to depend on the person and their hair-type. Some guys that post here detangle and comb when wet with apparently no trouble despite the fact that hair when wet is more apt to suffer damage. And yet, they do not claim this.
For myself, unless my hair is dry it will be demolished when trying to comb wet. Everyone is different.
At the length my hair is now, (Just a little below waist) I "Finger-Comb" only when dry and leave it at that........and it actually looks as if a real comb has done the work! EdG who has the longest hair of all who posts to the Hyperboard does the same. In fact, I learned this tip from him.
Just try and experiment and after a while you will know what works best for you.
Good luck.
I agree with Trolleypup,Simon.you should always detangle BEFORE you hop in the shower.less breakage that way!
I used to comb my hair when it is wet because I was obsessed with having straight hair; I think that has done some damage to my hair and it usually gets really frizzy once it dries. Nowadays combing my hair is not even a part of my routine. I let my hair air dry after a shower and it seems to detangle on its own; I haven't touched a comb in weeks and my hair looks and feels much better than before.
Combing when wet isn't a problem for me, as there are no tangles whatsoever. Guess I'm just lucky.
If I don't comb my hair after i wash it my hair will go fizzy
I always comb my hair before washing and then, after drying. I'm sure that the conditioner or a kind of shampoo including that, is definitely worth a try. I just have tried something like this and I even could skip combing few times. To be honest, my method of detangling usually looks like fight and the result is something between big afro and a witch hair style. If your routine is similar, you should always listen some good music to distract your attention :)
