my hair is just below the ears now and my last cut was about 6 months ago. then ends do look pretty bad, i dunno if they are spilt or just not even. do you think its wise to get a very very small trim? if i do im thinking bout saying to the hairdresser "ok this is what i want, this is how its gunna go" and telling her very detailed that i only want the slightest bit cut off possible. what do you think? and how did you tell your dresser to trim? and did they take off to much anyway?
Unless you "know" you have split-ends at this point, stay as far away as possible from Barbers and Salons and DON'T get any trims. Just let the hair grow-out all by itself for at least 2 years. It will even-itself up all by itself on its own. When washing, be sure to use plenty of conditioner.
"Amen" to conditioner, --- I couldn't live without it!!!
Justin, your comment above reminds me of a guy I met right after I cut all my hair off in Y2K. After I complimented him on his long ponytail (as well as lamented over cutting mine off), he simply gave me this one unforgetable statement of advise: "Stay away from scissors, just STAY AWAY FROM SCISSORS!" (Lol!!)
scissors?what are scissors? (lol!!)
Scissors... hmmmm... scissors....
Oh, YES! Now I remember... Aren't they those thinga-ma-bobs that primitive man used to use to hurt their hair way back in the 19th, 20th, and 21st century?
what are these scissors you speak of!!
Last time I messed with scissors I split my trousers and severely damaged my prospects!!
Strange. I never heard of those either...........nor do I want to! LOL
Thank you Ken ever so much for the kind words.......but then again you are always just that kind of person. Always thoughtful.
Yes, I am very happy with the beard. (Haven't had one since in my 20's.)
Here's another photo a bit larger than the avatar taken at the 2 week mark last week. OMG...........it grows so fast that I gave it its 1st trim today. Looks much better now.
As always, my best to you.
Justin~
Hey Justin,
Do you smoke a peace pipe as well?
Cheers,
John.B
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha! Sure, and I also communicate with tribal smoke signals from my cone shaped tent. Trouble is, nobody understands them. LOL
Cheers!
Justin~
Hi, Justin, that is an AWESOME new avatar, looking superb all the way!
All the best,
David
There may be some here who will disagree with what I'm about to say; but, here goes, anyway...
You have 2 main choices before you. Those who tend to recommend MLHH's most popular advise, Choice #1, will tell you definitely NOT to trim at all at such an early stage of growth as you describe you are in right now. "Just leave it alone, and it will all even out later", --- or other similar statements like that --- is the general philosophy behind those who most adamantly recommend no trims.
Choice #2, which isn't vocalized on this board as loudly or as often, would be to go ahead and get a trim, --- especially if it would make you feel happy, and make your life feel a little easier on you while trying to endure the infamous "awkward stages".
To make the wisest choice, though, --- especially the choice that will best suit YOU --- you'll need to fully understand the advantages / disadvantages of each, as well as major differences (and consequences) of chosing one over the other...
#1 will get you loooooooooooooooooong hair faster. Period. It may or may not look fabulous. That will depend on a lot of factors; but most importantly on how well you take care of your hair (which may include some trimming, especially if you have split ends by then).
#2 will get you more nods of approval from the "fashion police". (Not all members of the fashion police are evil dictators, BTW, --- but do beware of those that suddenly want to take over your life... especially your hair!) Unless you accidentally choose a horrific nightmare of a hair stylist, in most cases where you've gone to someone who's been highly recommended (especially if you find a stylist that specializes in long hair)... chances are that you'll be happy with the trim, --- and if so, pay the higher $$ price for it, and include a big fat tip, too!!!!
The negative that can happen with too quickly and/or too frequently choosing #2, though, is that it may take you fore-e-e-e-e-ever for your hair to ever get truly looooooooooooooooooong (if that's what you're ultimately hoping for)...
But there's also a negative possibility with following the advise in #1 as well: if you HATE the way your hair looks right now, but FORCE yourself to not trim it at all... then everyday you'll wake up hating to look in the mirror at your hair... which may result in one day simply "throwing in the towel"...
I've just written you a lot of words that can be summed up real easily in this way: when faced with having to choose between the lesser of 2 "evils", if you don't know which choice might turn out to be the worst... just pick the one that you think you'll feel the most comfortable with for now. When faced with the very same choice again in the future (whether it be a month from now, a year, or 10...), you can always pick the opposite choice, then!
- Ken in San Francisco (who, in real-life experience, has tried out both of the methods just described... and then some!)
Ryan,
I Agre with Ken. Tough it out. Use gel to lay down the chaotic bits if you need to, but cutting it will just delay the agony.
I mistakenly permitted a hairdresser to give me highlights, for he assured me that it would enhance my gray. But in reality it bleached my hair and I have been through two years of trims to get rid of the artifical color. If I were 30 - 40 years old I would go completely blond to match the color of my youth, but as I have grown older my hair has grown darker, and stangely it does not turn gray -- just darker with a few strands of gray, and my beard and moustache are white.!!!
But I have been through a period of regrowth, and it has not been fun for at times I have simply had to plaster down the shorter hair. Now my hair is long enough to tie back, AND I WILL NEVER, NO NEVER, CUT IT SHORT AGAIN.
If you want it long, and in my experience, long means happy, do not ever trim, until your hair is long enough to die back, if you want to tie it back. Just use gel to plaster down the part that flies away.
