I'm a newbie, I won't deny this. 19 years old headed to twenty. Well, I've decided that I am going to grow my hair out. I've decided on this several months ago. After just reading the longhair FAQ minutes before I had written this post, I've realised that my decision was because of explanation no.2. It's because I want my hair long for myself, not for any other reason. I was partly inspired by Japanese anime to have my hair grown out, particularly the character "Ashraum" from Record of Lodoss War. I just thought, "you know, long hair like that might just look good on me" and I made my decision to hang tough and grow it until my hair reaches the lowest part of my lower back. My hair is a very dark brown, and it grows straight and thick. Right now, it's about a couple of inches away from my shoulders. I must say, after reading the FAQ, my resolve to have my hair grown out has strengthened considerably, along with the appealing notion that "more women will hit you since most women do like men with long hair!" Besides that, I've had short hair before and, to tell you the truth, I always thought that I looked like a moron when I had short hair. I felt like a buffon being short haired, despite the fact that others say that it looks "sharp". Like I said before, and this is not a troll post, I am very serious about growing my hair out because I think that I would look and feel great with it. I would like to thank the writer of the longhair FAQ for helping to strengthen my confidence in my decision. Thank you! - Reinhart
Welcome and Good Luck. Its good that you're starting at age 19; imagine how long it'll be in 10 years with proper care :-)
I don't think I'll grow it that long, but definitely long enough to reach my lower back. Again, thank you for your welcome and wishes of luck. - Reinhart
P.S. Several people have commented that I would look cool with long hair. One girl has commented that I'd look sexy, even! The only people who's had negative reactions are my grandparents. But, of course, it's my hair. - Reinhart
Who cares what they think anyway? Four months ago, I was given a "haircut" by my sister, and never forgave her for that, and have grown it back to the point where it only needs about another inch to be where it was before she hacked me up. Of course, this time around, I'm going to add about 8 inches to what I had before. :)

Hey, hope your hair grows to be that long! As for what other people think, I agree. It's not their problem, so why should they be concerned? They're probably just acting like @$$es or being conformists. - Reinhart
Thanks... Or, they're being bigoted.

I've been growing my black, curly hair out for nine months. Mine looks like a big black afro (I am Caucasian though) and, no, it's not shoulder length. I've learned to accept it's 'froness, and even to deal with the possibility that it may grow WIDER instead of LONGER. I've never seen my hair longer than it's present 7 & 1/4 inches, so I don't know what to expect, though I really hope it falls down instead of becoming one of those wide ones.
Having this afro, however, has taught me lessons in identity. As I am an urban sixteen year old, I do get comments from other people who feel the urge to say something. Usually along the lines of "Yo BRILLO HEAD!" "DAYMN!" "Get a haircut!". There's also the innocent three year olds who look and yell and point at my hair, making adults who'd otherwise not give a shit say "Yes, that's a big afro. You better not make your mommy mad and grow things like that." "Yes son, he needs a haircut."
Thing is, after a while, I don't give a fuck anymore. If I have to live with my afro, the rest of the world will have to also. I used to...while not be shy...have somewhat of an inferiority complex when it came to my appearance. Growing hair and living as a longhair (albiet not the LONG hair, but the WIDE hair) has taught me a lesson in self confidence I'd of otherwise never known. Being a sixteen year old, my afro doesn't do much for the female population either. I use my afro as a 'screening' with respect to that: any girl who wouldn't give me a chance cause of my hair is probably just a superficial jerk anyway.
Thing is, my confidence is already built now. I've learned how to not give a shit about what other people think. I'd like my payback now: for my hair to grow DOWN, not OUT. I hope that with the summer my hair will grow to the point where it's own weight pulls it down.

It will get better... Just will have to wait.
I usually just tell them to shut up.
It should start doing that. Hopefully by the end of the summer, it should be hanging down instead of sticking out everywhere.
Reinhart,
Glad you've came to this noble decision. I like your outlook on the whole situation. I too am asian. Filipino to be exact and my hair is jet black and straight. Even though your hair is longer than mine I too have decided to grow my hair out recently and I am 22 so I envy you on making such a decision at 19. I've also always said that I want to grow my hair long but always got tempted to cut it. Now, there is no turning back! I've gotten this far (beginning the awkward stage) and it can only get better from here. Unless I cut it. YEAH RIGHT! Anyway, I am also a big fan of Anime. Have you seen Ninja Scroll? I really love Jubei's hair. I want to grow my hair about mid-back no more no less. It will take time, but like I said in another post: you cannot rush beauty...
Anyway, just thought I'd tell you that along with alot of other people on the board, you are inspiring to me in growing my hair long...
Welcome to the board and HAPPY GROWING! and VIVA LA LONGHAIRS!!!

Thank you.
Thanks again!
I'm half-Korean and half-Caucasion.
Can't stop saying thanks!
Continue to hang tough!
Yes. The violence in that movie makes "Heavy Metal" look like a Disneyland exhibit! As for your hairstyle choice, that sounds good! I'm planning on getting my hair to look like Ashraum's. If you've seen the "Record of Lodoss War" series, then you know what I mean.
An inspiration? Me? I'm very flattered, and also inspired even further by your words to continue growing my hair out. Thank you for your real friendly welcome. I do look forward to the day where my hair is as long as I want it. For now, what stuff will help to speed things up? For now, keep'em growing!! - Reinhart
For now,
What stuff will make hair grow faster?
I am taking Biotin and Fo-Ti. These are supplements that you can get at your local GNC for a couple of bucks depending on where you reside. I've discovered these two supplements here on the hyperboard, did some research, and then went out and got some. I must say that I am noticing rapid hair growth. You can read previous posts on these two and see where everyone else is at. I've got a bottle of BIOTIN (GNC brand) at the 600 mcg dose. I pop two in the morning before work and then two at night with dinner so that is a total of 2400 mcg's a day. Along with that, I take one Fo-Ti (also GNC brand, fingerprint) with each two pills of BIOTIN. Of course how much you'll want to take is up to you, but I don't think you can overdose on these since they are natural and your body will just urinate what it doesn't use, then you'll be wasting it instead. I've been on these two close to three weeks now. My hair definitely is growing. FASTER? I've read on the web that you can do nothing to make your hair grow faster, but you can take supplements to ENSURE that you are getting OPTIMUM hair growth. Hence BIOTIN and Fo-Ti. There are also a number of other vitamins that you can take you can find them here somewhere on the board. I do have to cut my nails more frequently so that is one sign that it is working since hair and nails are made of the same components. My hair is starting to itch my neck and get annoying but I LOVE IT! This way I know I am getting somewhere... Hope this helps.

My hair sometimes gets in my eyes, but it's no problem. I do feel a lot of my back hairs on my lower neck. - Reinhart
