Seems like almost everybody else here already has or is working on some sort of facial hair. Makes me want to play too! I have never seen so many posts about men working on their beards, goatees, and moustaches as there have been recently. Keep it up guys, you are all looking amazing!
Elizabeth
You're welcome to grow one, but don't be surprised if pics of your efforts are met with "vomit" emoticons.
;)
Nyghtfall,
Reactions I can handle, getting the beard started seems to be the problem. :-P I'm happy for you and your wife on finding your goatee look that works for both of you. It certainly does look good on you.
Elizabeth
Thanks, Elizabeth, from all of us starting the beard journey!
I'm a total newbie myself, it is only through the inspiration of guys on this wonderful community like Bill, Ken, Absalom, Bragi, and SO many "beard veterans" that I would have even DREAMED about growing a beard. In 53 1/2 years I had no desire for one, it is only after discovering the MLHH that I took the plunge!
All the best, and a heartfelt THANK YOU from ALL of us!
David
I think that's one of the things I love about this site, there is encouragement beyond scalp hair. You are growing in lots of ways David and it isn't just physical.
Elizabeth
Please, Elizabeth, no facial hair! Perfection can not be improved upon.
TLH
Dear Texas Long Hair, my grandiose ego tells me I'd just be a different style of perfect with visible facial hair but I appreciate the compliment. I won't be back in DC to thank you in person during your visit but I hope to see pictures from the event.
Elizabeth
I can't grow facial hair because they grow unevenly, very thin and grows very slowly.
Maybe it starts to grow thicker when you get older, how old are you right now?
I am 25 now... I shave once a week and still only get peach fuzz...
Hang in there, Tai Fu and Simon! Your time WILL come for growing a really nice beard, it just comes from putting a few more years on the old clock that's called age! I have a few more years on the clock than I know what to do with right now, lol!
David
Look on the bright side. You've never had to shave your ears, or up your nose, or trim your eyebrows. I was hoping all of that would at least wait until I was 40, but NOoooOO.
I'd still say to grow it if you want to Tai Fu. Facial hair isn't just about looks but what it does for you. Even sparse hair is still lovely to touch be it you or someone else holding your cheek.
Elizabeth
I wish i could grow some facial hair too, i tried growing out a moustache once but i didn't look any good, it was so thin, and now i always shave my stache and the small little beard strands that grow out. But hopefully when i get older i'll be able to grow a relatively thick beard.
Elizabeth,
I hope you don't mind? I just couldn't help myself.
I am always a joker... :)
I think it looks great. I guess the testosterone injections are really kicking in.
Keep growing and best wishes.
Jeffrey :):):)
lol Whatever
Uhh, Break an axel????
I don't mind one bit, Chris. I laughed out loud and thought I quite like that devlish look. Thank you for such a gift!
Elizabeth
Your a good sport Elizabeth. :) But on my second look at it, I guess it does look devilish. But I assure you, that was not my intentions. I guess that being in a hurry to draw a stash and goatee... It just didn't come out the way I intended.... :)
LOL! You know, sometimes it WOULD be nice to have something else to experiment with...then again, I'll never have to worry about getting razor burn on my face ;-)
I've thought about using some facial hair from a costume shop as part of my Ren. Fair garb sometime. Of course, at 5'2" tall I doubt I'd make a very convincing "man."
Keep growing, triming, shaping, and exploring the world of facial hair, guys. You look great!
Mouse
Actually height is not so much of a problem surprisingly. A friend of mine doesn't even reac five feet tall and she can pull it off. Best advice I've seen is "Tips on Passing" on Leanne Franson's comics website "Liliane, Bi-Dyke" (I'd link but the ads aren't reliably up to the standards of this site) and she points out fake facial hair can come off as drag kingish rather than realistic anyway. For the fun of a ren fair I'd say go for it though. Nobody is worried about convincing at a place aiming to be historical that sells cheescake on a stick.
I am reminded of the time I went to one of the renaissance festivals out here in California and a man selling small paper flowers had many on display in his beard. Asked if I wanted to buy some I replied I wished I had a beard to wear them in. He pointed out I probably already do. Now I regret not purchasing from him, the entertainment of his answer alone was worth the price.
Elizabeth
Then I shall keep my eyes open for some appropriate fake hair sometime. I love to be creative.
Mouse
I'm sorry that you & Mouse are unable to join us in us guys' beard growth journeys; but, hey, since I've actually met you in-person last August, I feel I can say this: quite frankly, you look way too gorgeous just the way you are (BEARDLESS)... So, please please please DON'T try too hard to grow one, --- I especially think your Bill won't like that idea too much (lol)!!
- Ken
Was it really August? Rick is right, we are overdue especially since I can't wait to meet Even.
Elizabeth
Well, it's not impossible. See the link. Of course, unless you are one of the very few women born with this condition you should consult a physician immediately if you start growing a bear. It would mean you had suddenly developed a hormonal imbalance, signaling something wrong. It's not necessarily unhealthy though--I've heard that a very small percentage of women have this with nothing considered pathological about it. As you might have surmised, most of them undergo electrolyis as soon as possible. I can't recall her name, but there was a well known South American artist, early 20th century I think, who had a unibrow and a slight moustache, which she refused to remove.
Wikipedia, Jennifer Miller
Wow. I really ought to read these things more carefully before hitting the button. If you suddenly start growing a bear, you've got much bigger problems.
And to think Bill is always teasing me about bears!
Steve, thanks to that link I also saw the bearded lady article which led me to a very interesting research paper. Thank you for such interesting reading.
Elizabeth
lol!!If it makes ya feel any better, some of the guys here (including myself) can't grow a decent beard.mine is uneven, very thin, and grows very SLOOOWLY.the only thing I'm letting grow now is a soul patch!! :P
"Grow what you can" will have to be good enough for me too. Ah well.
Elizabeth
Very Chic !!
.
This look works on Blais but not for me. Thanks for the laugh, Clipper!
Elizabeth
Well, chic, it's not.
And chick, it's definitely not. [g]
Hey, there ARE a lot of longhaired freaks on here, but in the hippie sense of the word, not the circus sense of it. [wink]
Bill
Believe me Elizabeth and Mouse, beards on ladies isn't good!!
It is probably worse for guys that can't grow facial hair, as its more common for them to be able to. Now that ust be annoying.
Keep it smooth ladies!!
I know it is all in fun but I see a lot of parallels to men who choose to have long hair and the struggle they face. Good is what is good for the person, not the viewer. I'm fascinated by the women who can grow facial hair and choose to. In fact, their experiences sound nearly identical to what I have seen men write about obstacles in their hair growth.
Debra Beechy wrote a thesis paper (linked bleow) on women with facial hair and here is part of what she wrote.
"Hiding makes others comfortable but it makes me sad. Being proud with what I have been given makes me comfortable and others uncomfortable at times. Inner peace feels better than any external conformity any day of the week."
Swap the gender and page seven of her work looks just like a hyperboard post- getting called sir and double takes for being in the wrong restroom, giving up social acceptance, the stares. Very interesting stuff and I haven't even gotten to any of the experiences of her interviewed subjects yet.

Interesting indeed, that does put a different perspective on it, and your right, why should people need to conform.
