Hi all,
I'm a 17 year old student from France, and I just discovered this forum which it just what I've been looking for for quite a long time :) I'm very happy to join you !
My hair has been growing freely (more or less :) for over a year and a half now, so I can just have a proper pony tail now. My father used to have long hair when he was my age, but he very quickly (in his twenties) started getting bald.
My mother's father experienced the same problem, though he started getting bald a bit later.
I've read a few posts in the forum which talk about baldness and how to "cure" it, but I haven't found anything about the links between genetics and baldness.
Should I worry ? Is there anything I can do ?
cheers,
ElVirolo.
From what I understand there is no conclusive way to predict if you will have MPB or not. Anyway this site has a lot of interesting stuff relating to baldness and genetics:

It's quite involved though.
Thanks for directing us to this information. A bit complex yes, but, informative.
Jeffrey.
The best advice I can give right now is not to worry about it! It's true that genetics can play a role in MPB, probably a bit more so on your mother's side than your father's, however, there is NO guarantee that you will develop MPB at all. The best thing you can do is grow your hair as long as you wish, enjoy your long hair for now and hopefully many years to come, and above all, don't worry!
All the best,
David
Baldness is usually passed down the on mother's side of the family. If your mother's father causes blindness from the glare when entering a room, guess what!
Baldness is kinda hit-or-miss in my family, but I've made it 43 years with all my hair, so I'm keepnig my fingers crossed. My brother's not so lucky.
They are making advances in science, so good luck to us all!
Salut,
Je suis aussi Français et j'ai aussi 17 ans ^^

Cool, merci pour l'accueil, je suis très heureux d'être parmi vous :) !
Hello there.
At this point I would recommend that you do nothing other than make an occasional self examination. There is no cure for male pattern hairloss. There are medications such as finasteride and dutasteride that usually slow down the balding process greatly, however, you may not need such medications. Saw Palmetto may also slow the hairloss process, however, there is no medical research to substantiate this. Saw Palmetto is an herb and is available without a prescription.
Keep in mind that stress is a key triggering mechanism regarding hairloss, so, try not to worry much about something that may never occur and enjoy your hair.
Best wishes.
Jeffrey.
