The coolest gig I ever had is coming to an end. I started in October of 2003. I was a core developer on a network security product that was, in some respects, ahead of its time. A variety of circumstances conspired to cause that lead to be squandered, and as a result of that our financial backers are pulling the plug on March 15. Unless somebody wants to actually continue developing on our platform, as opposed to just buying our copyrights and patents, I'm out of work on that date.
I've been growing a beard, not to see how long it will get, but because I have taken to growing one in Winter. I'm pretty much at maximum beardage now. I'll try to post a pic before I shave it. I'm planning to get a passport soon so I can cross the Canadian or Mexican border without having to worry. I plan to have my passport photo taken sans beard, since that's how I am most of the time.
I'm burning vacation days this week, all next week, and a few couple days in the week leading up to the shutdown. I really needed the time off; although of course this isn't the way I wanted it. I think I need a real reset before I do anything as serious as what I've been doing these years. The kind of intense stuff I was doing--BSD kernel programming, it takes some time to recharge the mental batteries.
So Steve, now that you'll be free of your job you can move west and join our long haired commune here! :-D

It's annoying when something like that happens- but also a bit of a relief, isn't it? And it's nice to be able to look back and say "I had a *really* cool job!".
Best of luck! Your next stop may be even better!
And, as always: fantastic hair!
Steve,
My friend is working for a good IT company in Tysons Corner.
They are looking for a strong developer under Unix right now.
If you'd like to learn more, please let me know (armycut@hotmail.com).
Thanks,
Alex
Sorry guys, I didn't mean to be asking for jobs on MLHH. I was just letting people know what's going on in my life. However, I did send him a reply.
