I am a heavy rock Bass Guitarist who currently works for a Pro. Audio shop as both a Bass teacher and an installation tech. assistant. I think that it's funny that my boss doesn't care wheather my LH is in a pony or not when we go to set up/install PA gear at a church or other more conservative venue, such as a stockholders' meeting. I ask him to give me a "heads up" on such jobs so I can "pony-up" for the day. I guess I can respect the views of a white collar-type of client who I might want to get some free financial advice or a stock tip from. My hair is thick and naturaly curly and looks like an expensive spiral perm when loose. This is why I let it down when barhopping or just teaching at the store all day. The thing is, the boss wants me to wear a golf shirt with the company logo and I hate golf shirts more than being passed over for a job 'cause I won't get a h/c. I like T-shirts or the kind that button from the tail to collar. Mainly because I like to display a pewter Thor's Hammer against a black T-shirt, not have it drop down a golf collar, I guess. Are there other musicians out there who also work in Home Theater or Pro Audio production? Have most people gotten used to the fact that Long Hair is the norm in the Music/Production field?
I would suggest ignoring financial advice/stock tip from these white
collar types. When it comes to financial investing/stock investing your best bet is to go with mutual funds that are well rated by an
unbiased source like htt://www.morningstar.com. I would strongly suggest ignoring the free advice from these clients. Many of them
have vested interests. If you going to invest your money learn the
companies you are investing in from top to bottom or got with some
mutual funds who will do the same thing. Next time you are watching
TV watch the ads for Janus mutual funds. Ultimately you should
protect your financial interests.
As far as wearing a shirt, go with what your boss wants. Be thankful your boss is not asking you to cut your hair.
Oh, that's not an issue; He's got LH too. He started as a club musician and is an enginering contractor. This Pro Audio thing is a francise he bought into.
And be doubly thankful that your boss isn't asking you to wear a TIE!!
Have most people gotten used to the fact that Long Hair is the norm in the Music/Production field?
It's the same thing with graphic arts. I think if you're in a "creative" job, people might actually prefer longhair--because you fit the stereotype better. Go figure.
Bet it's the same for motorcycles :)
You sound very much like myself. I work for a company that supplies equipment to TV stations, video production houses, recording studios, churches, live venues, and just about any place sight and sound are appreciated. We are just getting into the video confrencing industry, which is really flourishing right now. It is much cheaper to buy a $20,000 video confrencing system, than to fly 10 executives out for a meeting on-site.
I am a service technician who actually repairs equipment like LCD projectors, plasma & regular TV's and monitors, camcorders, video editing decks, mixing boards, amps, etc. This really takes me into an unusually wide variety of businesses. Today, I was at a bar tweaking a sound system in what we call "Shockoe Bottom" here. Old, rough looking buildings, fun place to hang out and listen to live music, very longhair-friendly. They don't care how bad you look, just so you do a good job.
I then Hopped in my van, and cruised up to the central business district to Wheat-First Union, a stockbroker to work on the video confrencing system there. I was wearing a sport coat, khaki slacks, and a golf shirt ( I hate these too!, especially cuz they don't work good with sport coats!). One of the techs there I correspond with frequently said to me "I don't really care how you look, but around this place, it's not necessiarly how good a job you do but if you make it look like you're doing something impressive, and wear fancy clothes, you'll go far here. You could do a terrible job, but if you make your work look impressive, and you look good doing it, they'll like you!" The person who told me this, has very much the same attitiudes about dress as I.
On the way out, I looked closely at the others around. Men with short hair so perfect, even the wind would not budge it, designer suits all around...even make up on some men to cover up facial blemishes! Even though I'm hardly gay, I couldn't help but notice that all the men wear undershirts, and have absloutley no indication of "equipment" below the waste! Most of the women had their hair up as well, hardly a straight-haired female in sight. Most of the women were wearing dresses and clothing that looked like they came from a set of masterpiece theater or something!
My dilemma is not only the different environments I work in on a daily basis, but the fact that I enjoy dressing nice a little bit...but within the bounds of confort, and how to keep nice clothing looking nice when you are fooling around with dusty dirty equipment. I carry ladders and a large tool case around with me. I frequently hafta use power tools when the job involves modifying something within the building.
hey, i'm a musician too, i play guitar, when i tell poeple i play guitar they think i'll play heavy metal or somethign cause i have long hair, when i say i play blues, they say 'oh strange, i suspected with the long hair, you were a hardrocker or something', i think that's a strange way to think, cause most of the white bluesguitarists have or had long hair too!
Funny! The Hard Rock bands these days aren't doing long hair. Godsmack Linkin' Park and Disturbed all have short hair or shaved heads. The new Look-alike trend is the Shaved Head+Goatee+Both ears piecred thing.
I like blues, too; don't get me wrong. If it weren't for the Blues, the early Hard Rock wouldn't have happened. Beck, Page, Clapton wouldn't have a foothold w/o the blues. Look at Robert Plant's singing...no white dude did much of that b4 him. J.L. Lewis maybe. Richie Blackmore was more Classical than Blues, but he was the exception to the rule.
Linkin Park.. Bah, a disgrace to call it hard rock. They really suck :-)
Hey guys, I'm leather jacket and jeans kinda guy myself and play a pretty mean bass. Have you ever considered investing in a few really nice button up shirts? Black, of course. I do phone work on manhattan's upper east side, and if a crisp black button-up and clean jeans works there, they should work anywhere. Don't limit yourselves.
Plus, there's nuthin' cooler than wearing a tailored(not neccessarily expensive) suit, stingray boots, and letting my hair down over a $400 italian overcoat(full, not 3/4) on a date with a woman who's only seen me wearing my work/rock/hangin' clothes. Shit like that really messes with folks minds! You don't want to give up yer neck thingy? Get another one and put it on a bola tie for the collared shirt. Just my 2 cents. There is no spoon.
"there is no spoon"?-from "The Matrix"?
Apok's hair in the Matrix sequences of The Matrix (when they are all styled up, ready to kick some Agent ass) looks cool. It didn't look like a ponytail or a braid, so I wonder what was done to get his hair to look like that.
