Hi, I am new here. My hair is currently about 12 inches long, and my problem is it never seems to look the way I want. For instance if I don't do anything to it after taking a shower, it will end up quite wavy and curly which I like, except that after it's completely dry it ends up very tangled as well, and looks & feels like a bird's nest. If I detangle my hair it feels smoother but it straightens out a lot except the ends flip way out and look ridiculous. If I comb or brush it or anything when it's dry it just ends up getting very puffy and thick. I have heard that it's best to leave hair alone when it is wet to prevent damage. Basically I'm looking for a way to allow my hair to be curly but without the tangling. Any suggestions would be helpful, I'm sure some of you here might have a similar hair type?
Easy. After you wash and condition your hair, while it's still wet, GENTLY comb it with a wide tooth comb. If you take your time, you won't even break a single hair. Taking your time is the key here, no damage will occur unless you get in a hurry. I do this all the time. Then, take some leave-in conditioner in your hands and run it over the top layer of your hair and gather your hair like your about to make a tail of it, and run your hands down it. Then, shake your head all around, and the curls will retract back up as they dry. That's it. Don't ever brush dry for curls. As you've found, dry brushing is a cruel joke for curly hair. You can however separate out individual locks to add volume when dry.
