On p.6 of the Index of the March 2007 issue of SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, we see the profiles of two research colleagues at Microsoft. TheN on page 37, they are side by side, face forward, and his hair disappears. Don't tell me that long hair gets in the way of good jobs -- some of course, but the employers aare the losers.

It just so happens that there is a guy (College Student)that works in the local McDonalds here in town who wears his hair like this while at work. It is really amazing when he tears-out of there and you see what appeared to be very little hair suddenly 3/4th of the way down his back!
A great illusion I think for any long haired guy to try when looking for or working at a job where long hair might mean no job.
I typically keep my hair bunned at work (but not always), and I love the feeling of pulling the hairstick out and having it fall loose when I get off work!
What is a hairstick? I keep my hair in a bun at work using one hair tie, and I am reaching the limits of what 1 hairtie can hold in. Options?
I'm pretty bad with describing buns, and what I do is not a classic bun (plus it requires very long hair), so I'll just answer your first question.
A hairstick is a more or less chopstick shaped thing, slightly pointed at one end, with a smooth finish, so it can pierce the bun and sort of go through the scalp hair behind the bun to stabilize it. Often used in pairs. Hair forks are similar, only joined at the top, blunt end.
