Hello I want to know 2 things . About how long on average was everyones awkward stage and what age did everyone start growing their hair out? I am 40 and hope it isnt too late to start
Hey Rich, it is not too late. I was 39 years old when I started growing my hair out from a rat tail. I am 54 years old now and have hair almost reaching my knees. I can't remember how long the awkward stage was for me, but probably lasted well over a year.

cool I have about 5 months left mof the awkward stage . I had the best hairday the other day but since its stunk
Hi Rich,
I think the awkward stage is a state of mind. For me the only awkwardness was the period of time that I had to endore negitive comments. They stopped after my family realized I was not giving in. Btw I started 2nd time @ 50 yrs, 1st time @ 42 yrs

Hey Rich:
I'm about 11 months into the growing process and it's been awkward since about month 4. I figure it will last about another 12 months or so...about the time I can get a decent low ponytail. I started at age 46-3/4. It's a long process but I think it will be well worth it. Every time someone says something negative I tell them that I'm letting it grow another inch. That usually shuts them up. LOL
cheers,
Max
I have had many during my life......sometimes living in that stage which I found enjoyable. A different look every day. To get out of all of it takes 3 years as there are really two Awkward Stages. The 1st ones bothers most guys. (about 1 to 1-1/2 years.) The 2nd is a piece of cake.
around 9 years old for myself.
NEVER too late to start! :-)
I know the first part . What is the second stage of the awkward stage? How do I differentiate between the 2 stages?
Rich
The 2nd stage, (and here I am talking about men with fairly straight hair) occurs after the two year mark. Suddenly you "think" all of your hair (because of length) is laying downward fine which it is. But suddenly the ends start flipping-up and won't settle down. Seems to make no sense, but it does happen. After a while this all simmers down and the flips NEVER appears again.
Hope this helps.

I've been through the awkward stage twice, because I had 2 completely separate growing-out experiences: the first time was when I finally seriously grew my hair long, starting in the early '90s, when I was in my late 30s (with my first full ponytail happening on my 40th birthday); the 2nd time happened after regrettably cutting my hair short in Y2K (when I turned 47 that summer).
The awkward stage has approximately a "beginning" (mildly awkward), a "middle" (when it peaks, and is indeed extremely awkward), and a gradually fading "end" (once you can first get it into a rather unimpressive ponytail, it's just a matter of time before it gradually gets longer and better-looking (as well as holds the hair back better). The whole process in my mind takes roughly 2 - 3 years. By the 3rd year, it's far easier to wake up happy in the morning about it!
... And, as far as how old you have to be before it's "too late" to grow your hair out... In my mind, it's NEVER too late!!!

I've been growing mine since roughly august 2005, and I'd say my awkward phase is dying out rather fast. I can tie mine back in a low tail and only the bangs don't tie, and it's about 4" below my shoulders so it's growing fast. As for age I'm 16.
I hope you do not get slack for growing it out
Welcome to our Old Farts Club! I started again last in Dec 05 at the age of 52; first time since college days. I am almost to the point where all of my hair will go into a tail; probably another 4-6 months; then I will consider myself to be out of the awkward stage.
Thank you fort your responses and I realized I have about another year to grow it out
I think your real question is the thing you typed last - No, it's not too late. I'm barely considering myself adult but I have the opinion that hair is not reserved for people of a certain age. Better yet; I admire seeing older people (no offence ;)) with long hair because it seems an age-taboo sometimes. Long hair is always beautiful, no matter what age you are.
As for your other questions: I started growing out on when I was 16 and I can't answer the awkward-phase question - I never measured my hair. But it's just before you can tie it into a ponytail, I guess.
Hello!
This little page has some good information about the awkward stage:

Scroll down to "The Bad Hair Phase"
And no it is never too late to start.
I am closing in to the end of mine, and I've been growing for almost 2 years..
Hope this helped, keep it growing!

I started growing my hair the day after High School graduation, in 1990. Before that, I'd worn a crew cut all my life. My awkward stage lasted just a little over a year. I haven't worn it short, since.
It's never too late to start growing your hair.
Good luck.
Hi Rich,
It's never too late! I started (re) growing my hair in early 2004, at the ripe old age of 50 1/2. Even though my hair is neither as thick or fast growing as it was when I was young, that is not going to stop me grwoing it, even at my age. I saw your earlier hair pictures, and you have the perfect hair type to grow really long, thick and fairly straight. You are not that far from being able to tuck your hair behind the ears, which should make the awkward phase much easier.
All the best,
David
I'm still in the awkward stage.I think everyone's definition of the awkward stage varies, for me it starts when your hair is long enough to get in the eyes and face, and ends when all your hair stays in the tail.
Well I wish I could be more help as I grew my hair out after high school and now I'm 44 so I can't even remember how I dealt with that awkward stage.Seems like a distant memory.LOL. Anyway like the others said its never too late to grow your hair so better late than never as the saying goes.Mark
Hello...I think my hair was about 4 inches long when "awkward" started. The awkward stage didn't bother me much if any at all. And I decided to start growing my hair long last September. Decided to start growing it long then. Gonna be 50 this April...never too late to start.
GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mike
