Well, it's been nearly 5 months since my last update! It seems like it was only recently that I posted the last one, but looking back I realize a lot's gone by! Hmm, where to start..
Well, before my last update I'd had some problems with my hair drying too slow, and I said I would tell you how my progress went on my next update. Well, I forgot to tell you about my progress in that update, but I haven't forgotten this time! I've also had longer to experiment, so you'll be happy to know I've found a solution. Right now I use Aveda Sap Moss shampoo almost exclusively, with Occitane Olive Paste which works very well with my hair. My mother is an SAP contractor and has been working for Aveda for the last few months (this is entirely coincidental, her working there hasn't influenced my choice!) and I was surprised to know she got bottles of any Aveda product for 1$ each at the Aveda employee store. That's pretty convenient.
In addition to that good news, I've noticed an influx of posts recently (okay, not so recently anymore) about all of the negative comments and reactions people have been getting from family, friends, and folks in their community. Thought I'd be one of the first to say that I've not actually had even one negative comment in my 29 months of growing! Not from strangers, friends, or family (okay okay, maybe once my dad sighed when I told him I was going to let my hair grow to the floor.) Maybe Minnesota is the longhair place to be, eh? eh?!? Actually, on top of all of that, I've managed to directly-but-indirectly influence other people around me to grow their hair. My mother's told me she doesn't plan on cutting it anymore, my ex-girlfriend (who I've parted amicably with - some conflicts with ambitions!) is growing to terminal, and my current girlfriend has also hopped on the bandwagon! You'd almost think I was using some dark magic to get control over their minds, but no! The conversation with my current girlfriend was something like this -
Her: My hair's getting a little long.
Me: I've noticed! Seems you're a little behind schedule with the cuts.
Her: I've decided I don't want to!
Me: Oh? Elaborate.
Her: Well, you're growing to terminal. I thought you'd like this too?
And, I do!!! She's actually got very fine, and very blonde hair. My hairtype is very coarse, very dark, and very thick. Almost complete opposites there, I think it's a bit funny. I like to brag that I'm likely to have a longer terminal length, hehe. (Sorry, haven't managed to convert any males as of yet. I almost had one snagged, but he went for a full beard instead of the longhair, he doesn't want to spend his active college years stuck in an awkward stage. I can't blame him.)
So, the end. Oh wait, pictures!!
These first series of pictures are all on day 12 of my wash cycle. Yes, I'm happy to say that in the winter I can go 12-15 days without needing a wash. Smells clean, feels clean, looks better, even after two weeks. Only thing I'm disappointed about with this update is that..my hair hasn't been growing as fast! I reported earlier in the winter that my hair was actually growing faster than it was in the summer. Well, that turned itself around. Could be that I've been sick with something for the past month or so. Not sure what it is, but I haven't been eating nearly as much as I usually do.
Front view-
If you've noticed, I'm growing a very thin-looking goatee! Normally this would stop me from trying it right now, but I've got a small mandible and I find it works very well for filling the slant in and making my face look more angled, which I'm enjoying! As demonstrated in the..Side view-
After showing that to a close friend, he likened me to Captain Henry Morgan. It made me smile, because in addition to being compared fondly to the greatest privateer in Pirate history..I'm actually related to him!
(You can also see one of the drones to my Uilleann Bagpipes in the corner of the picture!)
Mandatory stretched-lock picture-
And here it is from the back-
Now, people've told me my hair looks relatively thin to what it used to be. It's because it's the 12th day of the wash cycle, geeze! It's that reason that I opted to take those pictures yesterday, because I was planning on washing my hair afterwards. So, here's my hair on only day 2 of the wash cycle, in its restored thickness.
Front-
And tied back-
And that concludes my 29 month update. Before clicking the submit button, I'd like to update anyone who's cared about aforementioned ambitions - I'm going to be studying in Iceland starting next September (with my (aspiring)longhaired counterpart - whose hair actually has mine beat in length at the moment.)
Amazing, something for me to aspire to, i hope my hair looks as good as yours when it grows out :)
Your hair is looking great! That is awesome that no one is being negative toward your hair. The only people that were negative to me was my Mom, Sisters, a close friend, and ex. girl friend. One reason she is my ex. now. Never had any issues at work.
I am worried again that my family is going to bring up my hair again as my sister is getting married.
That sure is convenient you get your hair products for cheap, but from how good they make your hair look and since you use them so infrequently they would be worth it at full price :)
Damn, you sure have fantastic hair! I can't see how you can go so long without washing it. I can't go a second day without washing it or it looks stringy and dirty. But it is incredible, I wish I had such hair dude.
I have not had any negative comments since I started either, though mine isn't so long yet. Its great you are influencing friends and family to grow out, your hair is a great inspiration all around.
That is very cool that you play the Uileann pipes, I don't play any instruments but I love Celtic music and the Uileann pipes in particular, I even have a few CDs of Uileann pipe music :). They have a great sound, my girlfriend detests the Scottish Highland pipes. That seems to be too common a malady in people, I love them but being mostly Irish I admit to a bias :) Well she actually enjoys the Uileann pipes for their subtler tone. SOmetime you should take a pic when playing the pipes, that would look awesome.
Great pictures!
Thank you very much for the comment! It was actually your last update that inspired me to try the goatee for a while. I thought it made you look very young and powerful - not so much in the traditional sense, but it almost looked tribal! Very cool.
My girlfriend is the same way with her hair - she struggles to go more than two days without washing it too. If you've not had any negative comments yet, then I'm guessing you're safe for a while. Things have only gotten better with time on my end, and they were never bad to start with! Glad things are also relatively settled on your side.
Regarding the Uilleann Pipes - I'm surprised you listen to Uilleann pipe music!! The reason I chose to play the Uilleann's over the GHB's is the same - I'm part Irish, so I've got a bias. My mother also hates GHB's for that reason, hahaha (My mother's the full-blooded Irish one, she's got a very strong bias towards Irish instruments!) I have a picture that's a couple months old of myself playing the Uilleann pipes (which should be attached) - it was at an Irish session I was having at my house with a few friends. The picture was taken with a cell phone camera and I'm not actually playing them when it was taken, but it's the closest I can do for you now since it would be nearly impossible to have them all setup by the time a camera timer went off. The set's a Ray Sloan half-set in D. (After looking at it again, I'm not even sure what I AM doing! I think I was adjusting the tightness on the bellows or something.)
Wow, I was surprised that I could inspire anyone with the sparse goatee I have! I couldn't grow a proper beard to save my life :) It does look good on you, yours is also thicker too. I am still undecided on whether or how long I will keep mine.
Three of my grandparents came over from Ireland and the forth was a mixture, some Dutch I believe. I know very little of the technical side of Irish music (I just know what I like) so I am assuming that the 'Ray Sloan set' reference was to the maker of the pipes and not what 'set' of music you were playing. My mother is full Irish but loves the Highland pipes too. Do you play in a group? Anyway I think it is very cool to see people who play untypical instruments here.
Long hair and Irish music do go well together!
That picture looked like you were cleaning a M-16...
Wow - nice length! Looks good.
That looks great for less than 3 years.
Hi Gylfi,
No WONDER you never have any negative comments! You have been BLESSED, my man! Are you serious that you are posting a 29 month update (not a 39 month update)? (have you ever actually measured your growth rate, it must be at least an inch per month!) What else haven't I said other than what an awesome, thick, FAST GROWING, mane you have, and the ponytail is IMMENSE. I assume you are growing to terminal, and you may actually reach floor length. (Danny Cecati, eat your heart out!)
The goatee looks great as well.
I did notice you said you haven't been feeling as well lately, hope it's nothing serious.
All the best, keep it growing!
David
Hah! I don't think I'll actually manage floor length, but I'd definitely let it get that long if it could. I'm not sure what my growth rate is anymore since it's constantly changing, but my last update in October gave me a number like 9.7 inches a month since I'd started growing.
I appreciate the concern! I doubt it's anything serious, I just haven't had a lot of energy this last month and because of that I've only been eating half as much as normal. Today was actually a change from all of that, so maybe I'm better now.
All the best to you too, David!
Awesome mane!!! Very impressive ... you seem to be blessed with great hair.
Keep it growing as it can only get better as it gets longer.
Karsten
Dude, your hair is amazing.
Amazing hair mate, just amazing. If I can get anything near that I´ll be a happy camper.
Awesome!
Jeffrey.
Looks good. the washing cycle certainly seems to work for you.
Hey Gylfi!
By far the best hair I've ever seen for only 29 months! It's also great to hear the wonderful support you're receiving from your girlfriend. Best of luck to you in Iceland, as well! =)
-James
Hey man - It's guys like you with hair like that that give me the inspiration to keep it growing. Awesome, thick ponytail...defineately a 10 on the hair'o'meter! Bruce'ster
Its guys like him that make me want to pack up and go home!!!
Thank You for sharing your progress......just beautiful !
Keep us posted on your adventures in Iceland, that sounds exciting to me......studying what??
WWT
Your hair is AMAZING! And it looks like very good growth for 29 months! Your routine is obviously working, because your hair looks Ace. Keep it growing, you are an inspiration!
-Mihnea
Definitely hair to be proud of. Looks fantastic on you!
I would like to see what your hair looked like then, if you could please post it thanks :)
I don't have any pictures from March 2006, but here's one from early May 2006 that can't be more than a couple of inches off of my March 2006 length.
Thank you very much =) this really helped alot
Your hair looks great, and only 29 months? How long was it when you decided to grow to the floor? Also are you part American Indian? Just curious, I am part Indian.. Blackfoot and Cherokee.
I've got no idea how long it was when I decided that. My whole life I'd used a consistent haircutting cycle - buzz it off in the summer while it's hot and let it grow longer in the winter! Sometime after the last time I thought to myself that I'll just not bother with buzzing it off in the summer, hehe. When I first joined the MLHH in August I didn't even understand simple concepts like terminal length, so I'm sure the MLHH had a lot to do with my ambitions of growing it to the floor! (So that makes the answer to the original question sometime around August 2006.)
I'm not American Indian - I'm 50% Swedish and 50% Irish exactly. I'd actually guessed you might have some AI heritage just by seeing your hair in that avatar a while ago! They've certainly got good genes for hair growing.
Yes! Go Sweden! :P
Thanks, but what is AI heritage? That's something I have never heard of. I am mostly Irish also.
Oh sorry, just abbreviated American Indian! Unless you've got a background in robotics too.
Hi Gylfi. What a creative post! OK, whoa, I'm in shock...if my hair looks half as good as yours does in 19 more months, I'll be the happiest guy this side of Minnesota.
Myabe it is! "Eh!" - I always thought that was part of what linguists call Canadian raising.
Ahh, yes dark magic! There is certainly a place for it at times, I wish it could make hair grow.
The goatee looks nice. It does give your face some more angle.
OK, not every can really claim that they actually do have "a little Captain in 'em"!!!
And this picture is some ridiculous volume, I am in awe.
That's great too. You will love in Iceland no doubt. I've only seen pictures, but can imagine how stark and austere and bewitching the landscapes must be in person. Have fun, and study hard.
Bragi
Well, I'll be anxiously awaiting that update from you!
Yeah, but folks on the West coast liken Minnesotan accents to Canadian accents, so they've obviously got some similarities! I always considered Minnesotans eh-sayers too.
Hahaha, I forgot that motto went with Captain Morgan. I'm going to save that one.
Thanks Bragi! I've been to Iceland a few times now and I can confirm that it's precisely how you imagine. It's utopia! Studying hard is part of the conditions of going there :( It's fun though, mostly language stuff right now.
This must be one of the most fantastic combination update write-ups I have ever seen on the Hyperboard as long as I have been here.
Gylfi, your long hair is superb!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you ever so much for sharing what you have with all of us.
Inspiration devine!
you are giving me a serious case of hair envy right now...grrrr!! :)
Too many replies to answer tonight! I've answered the ones with questions etc. for now, I'll try and address the rest tomorrow. So don't think I've ignored you :(
Incredible!!!!
I love your hair man, It looks awesome. It has a really natural look with great color :)
an absolutely fantastic mane. It is getting really long, just superb. Keep growing it for sure. I know you are very tall, so waist length (if you decide to grow it that long) will take considerable time and patience to achieve. Waist length or longer looks awesome on anyone, but especially on someone who is really tall. Keep it growing and flowing and thanks for the update, the difference is amazing.
Absalom
nice looks very thick
and your ponytail PERFECT
My hair too looks thinner a couple of days after i have washed it, but restore its thickness when i wash it
a.
Gylfi,
that mane of yours is exemplitive of why I've always wanted long hair. I am glad I've finally gotten on the path to attain it.
You hair is simply luxurious.
good for you, Capt'N!

Oh My God, your hair is FANTASTIC!!!! Its is some of the best looking locks I have ever seen!! Woe.
And the facial hair is superb with it, congratulations!!!
OMFG! Wow, you really have amazing hair, it's INCREDIBLY thick and long! I especially envy you about the fact that you wash it once every 12-13 days?! :P Mine gets oily and dirty in 12 hours :(
Still, it will get even better if you really reach floor length =}
Congratulations, this is really outstanding progress!
I can see why your so persuasive to get others to grow it long!
Congratulations,
Arnold
You have stunning hair, Gylfi, and from the photos it looks like you are completely at ease with your mane. It's a part of you.
