Hi everyone, i cant believe how often i keep looking at this site. I am only in the early stages of growing my hair, but i feel like i am obssessed with reading about it. I keep looking at jasons growth pictures and comparing his monthly growth with mine, etc,.Having had short hair all my life , and now at 45 doing something i have always wanted to do, its like a new hobby and a new community is here.
Well a few questions, do you guys think caps, and slicking back hair are a good idea when entering the big hair and messy look, also i have some grey hair, keep it or dye it? thanks.

but the splendor of old men is their gray hair.

At 53, I just used a tail when possible and clips behind the ears to catch the floaters; or sometimes mousse (sp?). I also like the distinguished look; I kept my racing stripes.

Hi Jonny,
I'm a 53 year old geezer myself. I prefer the natural look myself, I don't have a lot of gray anyway, and the bits of gray add some character in my opinion. I say it's best to avoid dye, it can cause damage if you're not careful, and for maximum length, you really want undamaged hair.
For control, in the early stages, caps are fine, as the hair gets longer, you can tuck it behind the ears. Some guys use mousse or gel in the early stages, but it's better to go easy on these as they can dry out your hair. After a year to a year and a half, you should be able to achieve a ponytail, a great milestone!
All the best on your new journey to long hair!
David
Hey brother - Well, I wouldn't exactly call myself an old Geezer like David said (lol) but at 51 I've got plenty of grey hair (if not all) If I dyed my hair, I would have to dye my chest, and if I did that I'd have to dye....well, you get the picture!!! Like I said in an earlier post - we are all unique people with unique hair so be glad for what you've got and embrace your uniqueness. That's the only way to be truly happy IMHO. On a lighter note, I'm not a cap guy, never have been but they do help keep the hair under control. Gels do the trick too. I met a guy the other day who had long hair (kind of Steven Segal'ish) in a pony tail and slicked from forehead to tail. It actually looked pretty good though I prefer the soft look and feel myself. Glad you're so INTO the process and the MLHH community. Bruce'ster
Welcome, Jonny--Yes, this a great community to be a part of. As to your questions, I never have been much into caps so I can't offer much advice there. L'oreal Melting Gel is excellent during the awkward stage. Gives good hold and rinses out very easily.
As to the gray hair, it depends on how much you have and how you feel about it. If you feel that it makes you look old or less attractive, then by all means dye it. But do it for yourself, and not for anyone else.
Yes, I dye my hair (because my natural white on top, black in the back looks extremely bizarre). If you do decide to dye it, I can offer some expertise--feel free to e-mail me. And happy growing!!

I know what you mean. I wonder now why I didn't start this journey earlier.
Some survived by the cap and/or slick back with gel/hairspray, though others just don'y let the messsy look bother them. I have curls and it is not so hard to style my hair that would, if straight not look nearly as neat. I did have to get over the fact that my hair will look bigger. But, as far as hair goes, bigger is longer.
My first post here was a request for help because I decided to use a men's only grey cover-up formula. I don't have that many whites, but I have enough that, if I don't start dying the hair now regularly, then when I do dye it it wil be very noticeable. I didn't want that. Suffice it to say that I was less than satisfied with the results: my brown hair that has reddish highlights in the light was transformed into a dull, one-toned chestnut brown. Now that the dye has faded out and the highlights are again visible, I much prefer the natural look, even with the whites.
I hope this helps,
Shawn (Mr. Crow)
Congratulations on your decision to let your hair grow. It will be a great adventure.
BIG TIP: NEVER compare your hair with Jason's.....that can be really depressing ! HA!
Hats are a great help during the awkward stage (and after)and by all means keep your natural colour.....gray, white, salt & pepper long hair looks fantastic (You wouldn't want just all one beautiful colour like Jason's, would you ! HA!)
(Note to Jason....Please KNOW these comments are meant to be fun and flattering...)
