Hi all!
I was reading DavidN's post about his anniversary on MLHH and thought it would be cool to start a thread about your first ever post on MLHH. What brought you to this site? What sort of questions did you ask? etc etc.
Well, here is an account of my first time with MLHH...!
I used to have a shaved head, but one day I saw a movie, Escape from New York, and remember thinking that Kurt Russell had great hair. I decided I wanted hair like that so I googled "men's long hair" as I had no idea the best way to grow it out. I found MLHH and my first post was this pic of Kurt, and a question asking advice on growing to that length, whether I should get trims along the way, and how long should it take. It was Justin who replied saying that it shouldnt take longer than 6 months or so, and not to get any trims.
Well, 6 months came and went, but by then, thanks to MLHH, I was addicted to growing my hair and had decided I wanted more! My next goal is mid-back, then after that who knows! I always like to think in small steps.

I remember about a month ago making my first post here and being welcomed by everyone. David N went above and beyond to reach out to me and I owe him a great thanks for that. I received many great tips and realize everyone here is very friendly and still accept people like simpa who had a major setback and had to cut his hair. I wish you the best of luck simpa to regrow your hair. . I feel like I have a new extended family who can help me every step of the way to get my hair long. I sometimes think I am stuck in this awkward stage forever but I know I will get past it.
Rich
Thanks for the kind words, yeah i will regrow my hair again, but the only question is when i'm gonna start, maybe sometime after summer or maybe even later, but we'll see, i will report to you guys as soon as i've decided to start my journey:)
I at least want to get out this hairdye completely from my whole hair before i'm growing it out again.
Simon
Thanks ever so much, Rich, for your kind words. I guess I find this such a wonderful community that I love to welcome new people to the MLHH, there can never be too many members here!
All the best,
David
(I'm really looking forward to seeing you in 2009 or sooner! If you do make it to Nova Scotia before that, be sure to email me so I can meet up with you)
Hi Pablo,
Thanks for starting a great thread! I remember my first post very well, probably 2 or 3 days after I found the hyperboard on September 14, 2006. Before discovering the board, I had abused my hair badly by straightening it almost daily for 1 1/2 years. That is another reason I wished I had discovered the MLHH sooner, I could have saved myself a lot of grief if I had known how much damage I was causing. My first post was to seek advice and tips about what to do about hair damage. I even remember the first guy who replied! It was Neil, who himself was fairly new to the board at that time.
David
I should have mentioned that the first update I remember seeing was Justin's 4 year update last September. He had reached waist length in 4 years from a buzzcut and I was totally awestruck. I thought at the time that if I could ever grow a mane like that, I would be the happiest guy in the world (I still would be!) Unfortunately, I was too new and a little shy at the time so I did not comment when I saw the update back then.
David
I had been dreaming about geting long hair for several years. I listen to and play heavy metal so that´s a given inspiration. I also love the look of long hair. Anyways, I gave it some thought and initially I actually decided not to grow my hair out for a few really silly reasons. I thought I´d look like a girl and that I had the wrong hairtype etc. However, after watching videos of heavy metal bands and stumbling onto this messageboard I finally decided to go for it. And I´m really happy that I did!
My first post here was related to problems with my scalp (all good now though) and if my hairtype was right for long hair. The sites in the links-section really helped me out too.
I found this place while trying to find a picture/pictures of men's ponytails, and I wanted to know the "best" length for a man to wear a tail. Needless to say I found nothing good but this site was at the top, or near the top of every google search I tried.
And voila, the MLHH is in my favourites list and my toolbar ^_^
My first post was in october. I introduced myself with a picture. I had already started to let my hair grow but wasn't sure how to care for it. I googled "Long Haired Men" and came across this awesome website. I started lurking for about a week reading posts and looking through the Users Directory.
I wanted an idea of how wavy hair would look once long. I came across users: "Oren" and "Mesmerized" and was amazed how great long wavy hair looks. I then decided to let it grow for sure and become a full-time member. By the way , This guy inspired me to grow my hair. I want it longer but he still inspired me nonetheless. Antonio Banderas
Desperado is actually one of the movies that inspired me to grow out my hair long, Antonio looked so cool with that ponytail, and many other longhairs in that movie too:)
Simon
Yes, Antonio Banderos certainly had great hair in Desperado, sadly, he wears it much shorter now.
And Chris, it's cool that you joined in October! I got listed in the directory at the same time, after a month of lurking. You and I must have joined at about the same time, lol!
David
I had attempted to start growing my hair in October 2005. I think it was around late February 2006 that I first searched for "men's long hair" and came across this board. Unfortunately, I got my hair cut again on March 3, 2006, even with this site to reference. And then I went back to the barber on May 12, 2006. It was within the day that I came back to this site and set my mind to growing. I didn't officially join the site until this past October.
I don't remember much in terms of specific posts, however, as I obviously didn't know anyone on here. Nevertheless, this site is awesome and I am so glad to be a welcome part of it. =)
-James
Hi James,
I guess last October was a great month for all of us, it's cool that Chris H, you, and me all joined then. However, I only discovered the board in September, you knew about it a year ago February. Hope you plan to grow your hair for the long haul this time!
David
Great topic:
Either four or five years ago, I had allowed my hair to get shaggy and sort of liked it, but honestly felt a little silly at my age. I Googled "men with long hair" and up popped all you guys. I watched for a while, then posted my first question along the lines of whether is was absurd for a older man to let his hair grow. Several answered, but the one I remember was from a fellow calling himself "Baldy the Eagle", who said "Go for it". Thanks Baldy !! Over the years this forum has become important to me watching guys grow not only their hair, but their strength of character. The overwhelming positiveness is so refreshing in a world that seems to have gone crazy. The amount of work that so many have put into this over the years is staggering, but richly rewarded.
Thanks to all for being here to share my morning coffee and evening tea.....wish I could chat and visit with everyone....
Cheers
Walter White Tail
I have always remembered Baldie the Eagle was the first person to reply to me. Just that simple subject line post he wrote made me laugh and feel welcome here back in late August 2003. Looking back I see a lot of names once seen regularly on the board. The archives are a fun trip back in time and I'm glad they are able to be seen again.
Elizabeth
My first memory
If any of you want to use the archives, there is now a link at the top of the main page to access it.
Bill
Thanks for adding that link, Bill! I now have a chance to see what I have been missing all those years before I found the hyperboard.
David
My pleasure! Getting the archive up and running was the final project in moving MLHH to mlhh.org, an endeavor which began in June. It was greatly satisfying to finally see it on line.
Some people may not use the archive much, while others may enjoy it a lot. Topics on the board do seem to repeat, so the archive may seem repetitive to some. On the other hand, it's a great way to bring all the comments in seldom-discussed topics all together. An example would be what men have said about a certain hair product over the years.
We have about a twenty-month gap over our ten year history. Victor put many hours into maintaining the archive, and that is why we have it today. His work situation for the gap period had to take priority in his life, though, and that is why the gap. He has some records during that period, however, and he will be adding them back in as time permits.
I have written software that completely automates archiving for future posts so it won't take up anyone's time. This will assure that we have a complete archive from here on out, and it will assure that the archive always contains our recent material. When posts are removed from the board, they are now instantly dropped into the archive.
Bill
Thanks AGAIN, Bill!
I just found my first ever post, September 20, 2006. WAY cool! The first guy who replied WAS Neil, I guess I do have a good memory, lol! (I did a search on "damage" and "straightening")
David
...you are fast approaching your 10th Anniversary here!
No doubt when it comes to posts on this site you have "seen it all"!
Hello Everyone,
10 years ago, I came across this board and Victor's Samson of the Month, which I found was very invigorating to see, as the 90's ponytailed look was transitioning to the "chic" shaved heads a la Thx-1138 styles.
10 years ago, I was transitioning from a mc-job to a "real job" which I really like: I am a computer tech, at a montreal University, and really love my milieu.
Having Asperger's Syndrome, I sometimes panic when trends change, like when the shaved heads came into fashion, I was wondering, if I had to eventually shave mine too... Thanks to this board, I learned to defend myself against eventual pressures from others. By the way, I consider myself lucky because in a university milieu, it is not "politically correct" to pressure people to conform. People my age (I was 38 back then) were less pressured to conform than the teens or twentysomethings. But I saw beautiful manes dissappear as the shaved head fad creeped in anyways, but mine was not on the chopping block.
The board did give me a bit of self-assurance, sometimes the creeps when someone posted about his workplace installing a new policy where men's hair cannot touch the collar, while women can keep their hair long. That makes my blood boil, when changes like that are forced on people.
I like the good times like meeting fellow board members, by chance as they pass through Montreal.
My hair is long since 1979 and hasn't changed much.
I am posting a picture taken in 1998... not quite 10 years ago, but close. As I love to tell people: "I used to have long hair"
I remember that when I first found out this forum I didn't pay much attention to it itself but rather looked at the link section. Then I discovered through reading that it's incredibly inspirational, diverse and shows that every hair journey is unique for everyone =} I found it in the summer through Google, I think around June or July and was drawn to it after that. I joined as an official member this winter I suppose... I love it
Five or six years ago (before I had started growing long hair, when I thought I would never get the chance) I remember seeing Victor's site (http://the-light.com/longhair) and reading Bill's "On Being a Longhair". I probably browsed this board at the time, but I don't remember doing so.
I finally started growing in Aug. 2004 (after a butchering of eight months' growth), but I found this board in Jan. 2005 after looking for a way to make my frizzy hair settle down. Within twenty minutes, I had learned not to do some things I did, including showering with hot water and using a combined shampoo and conditioner (now I wonder why I never questioned the ability of that combination to do two jobs at once). After lurking for a year, I decided it was time to join the directory.

I've always admired long hair on men since my teenage years, which was around the late sixties and earkly seventies, so having acquired Internet access, I searched around on "long haired men," "longhair," "longhaires" and so on and besides finding sites with pictures of long haired men, I found this site which was a fairly serious discussion list on issues affecting or relating to men with long hair.
Back then, which was the late 90s, the MLHH had less postigs of pictures by people wanting to proudly show others their long hair but fine.
I've had some arguments with other members here on how to go about defending our rights as long hairs, to the point that we never communicated again.
Well John, if you are still here, let's agree to disagree and put all that behind us as it was political, rather than personal.
While I don't regular visit or post on the MLHH, I do enjoy the occassional visit to see what's going on.
Congrats to Victor Engel and the moderation board for keeping this forum as one of the world's best, if not the best discussion lists on issues concerning men with long hair.
It was either late 2003 or early 2004 when I first found Victor's site showing a number of pictures of men with long hair. I had thought about letting my hair grow out, but was too caught up in the world of "the business look" to seriously consider it.
Two events have had a big impact on me and my attitudes towards how I now approach life. In December of 2004 I had a heart attack. At the time I was extremely active; full court basketball, racquetball, running with my kids while coaching soccer, etc. My outlook on what was important to me changed quite a bit after this event. Then, in August of 2005 Katrina hit my beloved South Louisiana, followed not long after by Rita, and I witnessed firsthand the destruction of this life changing event. Events such as these clarified how fragile and precious life really is, and that it is too short to be bound by artificial limitations that are really self-imposed.
I lurked here for a while before joining actively sometimes early in 2006 and have been thrilled to be a part of this board since that time. Being conservative and in business for myself does not lend towards many everyday associations with other longhaired individuals, and that is why this board has been so instrumental in helping me keep the path.
So my sincere thanks to all here.
Big George
Mine was back when i was growing my hair out, I met a guy on another forum (who i don't believe comes here anymore) who mentioned this forum. I had very dry and unhealthy hair back then, I literally did *everything* wrong! I really just remember reading the FAQs and hair guides and saying "Really?!" (Like Kyle, in that South Park episode "The mystery of the urinal deuce") After starting to use the advice on here, my hair slowly improved (even though my mother couldn't stand to see my hair NOT frizzled and dried to a crisp) until it became almost unrecognizable! Much healthier, wavier, soft, and I generally love(d) it.
