A long time has passed now, and I'm not getting anywhere. I think it looks too thin at the ends when you look at it from behind, but it looks fine from the front.
I'm wondering if I should cut it a bit shorter, cause it seemed more full when it was shorter.
Any thoughts?
Yeah, when your mane gets so sparse at the ends that you can easily see through it, you've probably reached terminal length. You may get a few more inches beyond what is there, but it will be very scraggly. (Been there, done that.)
Although most men can easily grow enough hair to look longhaired, a lot of us just don't have the genetics to reach the waist. We can take comfort in realizing that to most people, "size doesn't matter much" when it comes to manes. If you've got one, you'll get all the mistreatment that every longhair gets. ;-)
The hair you've grown looks great, by the way! Whether you want to chop it off to have a thicker even bottom, or just let it tail off in a thinning fade, is a matter of personal preference. I've just gone for the fade. (no trimming)
Bill
Hi there, Stefan
I have to say I feel your frustation with apparent slow growth, my third year is coming up and I know I am behind some guys with considerably less time on the growing clock, including some with less than two years.
Your hair does look great from the front, it has lots of shine, and is naturally curly on the ends. You appear to have very fine hair, and to be honest, the ends in back are a little thin, but overall your hair has lots of shine and looks good. Just a thought, have you tried a volumizing shampoo and conditioner, they can do wonders in making fine hair look thicker. Otherwise, Bill has given you excellent advice, I would certainly listen to him, especially since you have similar hair type to Bill in its degree of curliness.
Hope this helps and all the best,
David
Ken is over here and we were talking about this thread. One thing we feel we should mention is that trimming off a mane that is not super-long may contribute to its being more messy just because it will have less weight. In Ken's words, "Poofiness comes back." Trimming may make the bottom behind your back look better, but it may not make what is higher up and seen from the front look better. You may want to consider that before trimming.
Bill
Hey David! Thanks for the comments! I think I'll look for some voluminizing shampoo and see what happens :)
Thanks for the comments Bill :D
I'll put off the trim for a while, and try out some other options first :)
If it is terminal, then it's at least better than having short hair! :D
It looks a little like my hair did last autumn before i made that huge trim, my ends were rather thin so i decided to cut off a bit, and now i have completely short hair again but will grow it out again when the time comes.
Otherwise your hair's lookin great!
Simon
Thanks!
It maybe that you would be best trimming the last couple of inches at the bottom - no more. these look like the longest hairs before you started growing out which will inevitably be ahead of the rest. This way the bulk will catch up. Do you have a friend who could do - or even do it yourself - I did so for the first time about 4 weeks ago and it was a big success in appearance.
I can trust my father to do it! I don't want to try myself.
We'll see!
Hello there friend =)
Look, I am really sorry that you're not happy with your hair... Really =( I as well honestly think it looks really thin BUT, I do think it looked there was much more hair on your previous pictures (which I saw at your page)...
My guess if that you check if you are doing a proper detangling... I don't know, but you might be breaking your hair if you're not too carefull... Also, knowing you are a huge metal fan, I wonder if you headbang, and if you do, I would suggest stoping it as well, as it can damage hair heavuly as well...
Your hair has a lot of shine to it, which may cause me to sound ridiculous, suggesting you are breaking your hair off, but that may be happening. I at least take 5 to 10 minutes every time I brush my hair, and a half an hour when I wash it. You must be very gentle to have the best of your hair...
I do hope that you forgive me if I'm wrong... I only want to help =) If you really come down to the conclusion that your hair doesn't really grow longer because you've reached terminal then there's no problem at all =) Just listen to Bill's wise words, and if you want my opinion, I would keep your faerytale ends =)
I wish you the best luck... You've come a long way and I definitly think you should keep your hair as is... It's one big achievement =) Cobgratulatuions so far... =) =) =)
I really hope I did cheer you up =P Your hair is gorgeous... keep it long =)
I never knew that headbanging damages hair. Could you clarify, please? (I am a metal fan too and headbang pretty often, and when I go to concerts I notice tangles due to the sweat and headbanging, but not when I do it at home or anything like that)
Thanks for the clarification, your hair is definitely an inspiration!
-Mihnea
ok, if you headbang don't be so scared that it's all going to fall out and look super thin...So it'll be tangled, just untangle it.
Nah I know man, untangling isn't a problem, it's easy with conditioner, I just want to know how regular (non sweaty, non tangly due to concert) headbanging is bad for the hair. I can't imagine how it could be.
-Mihnea
Well, I don't headbang, but I do dance a lot (and the hairtie always falls out) so I know how hair reacts. I myself should braid my hair and protect it better before dancing, but I definitly notice a LOT of tangles when I do it. Tangles are never good, wheter they are easy to take out after or not. Detangling puts stress on hair, that can lead to breakage and so forth... Also, you should always keep your hair away from sweat, because it contains salt that can dry out the hair as well... Tough I heard a theory of a lady who thinks seat is good for hair and scalp (tough for my experience, I don't like it a bit =P ).
Now, I think it's very important not to quit the things you like because of your hair, as long as you don't notice any negative effect (and I see you don't, relatively to headbanging). I myself didn't stopped dancing with my hair loose (I love the sensation of it), so if you want to headbang, just do it =)
Besides, hair should make us happy right?? One of the good things of long hair, in my opinion, is it's motion, and that's related to headbang definitly as well...
By the way, I just stated headbanging to Measmerized in a nother way, like trying to figure out why is hair is thinning at the ends... It doesn't mean everyone has to stop headbanging lol Believe me tough, that I think everyone has to make little efforts to keep healthy hair... Even if only psycologycal (my war against my parents stupid toughts about long hair on men and long hair in general...)
Oh well... =) ;)
Haha true, thanks for clarifying buddy.
Keep it growing
-Mihnea
Cheers friend :)
I'm mostly happy about my hair, it was mainly seeing how thin the ends were that made me unhappy. It seems to have gotten a lot thinner lately, for some reason.
I don't really headbang all that often, there aren't too many concerts here. I'm willing to take whatever damage that causes though, cause I like my hair, but I also like to go crazy once in a while :)
My hair should be an enjoyment, not cause me to not enjoy other stuff.
I am (trying at least) gentle with my hair, but I never take that long, mainly because after maybe five minutes I can't find any more tangles. Whenever I find a knot on a single hair, I cut it off just before.
I'm at least intending to keep having long hair.
Thanks man :)
Yeah, it's always encouraging to read comments here!
Hey, your hair looks really cool. I like the piercings and the goatee, how long did it take you to grow it? Keep it growing, it all looks great!
-Mihnea
Thanks man!
I've been growing the beard for around 1 year and some months. But I've trimmed it a bit a couple of times, cause one side grows faster.
Don't cut - I think it looks great - and I love the chin beard ... the whole look is very good for you.
Karsten
Oh I have no intention of cutting it short. If I did get it cut, it would be maybe just a trim or maybe up to 5cm at most in the back. But I haven't decided anything.
But thanks, I like the look as well :)
Hopefully my beard will grow longer than my hair, hehe.
Hejhej Stefan,
Hvordan har du det?
Hvad tænker jeg?
Well, I think your hair looks great just as it is. The beard goes well with your hair. As fas as the ends, while they do look a little thin, they do not look bad at all, not a bit. Your hair looks very healthy and shiny, and I hope mine turns out as well. We two have a very similar hair type in terms of color, texture, and density. My hair is very fine and curly too.
Since you did ask, here are a few volume (thickening) suggestions. My hair, obviously, is shorter than yours, but I do some things to make my hair appear thicker than it really is. Now, I dont try to fool anyone, but I just am making the best of what I have ;-)>
Whenever I wash, condition, and comb my hair, being extra-careful not to break or snag any strands with a wide tooth comb, I let it air-dry, but while it is drying, I shake it around, flip and lift it up to make sure that the locks dont lock-up to much hair in each one, creating a sparse appearance. If I were to not do this, I would end up with about five or six coils and that would be it. Also, I comb the roots up until the point where the curls begin to separate out the hair near the scalp so it doesnt look flat against the head after it has dried or the next day or whatever. To get all volumed back up in the morning after sleeping on it, I take some leave-in conditioner with wet hands and run it down the length of my hair as if I am making a tail even when Im not, then wet my hands again and do the same thing being sure to unfurl all the curls that have tightened up during the night. Then I shake it back and forth, like I REALLY mean NO!, and am sure to flip upside down too. This sounds crazy but works! Then run your wet hands over the top to smooth down the frizz, and thats it. About a five minute job at the most.
Also, I think you answered your own question after a fashion. You said that it looks fine from the front. If you think it looks fine, then I certainly wouldnt worry about it much. You just see the front yourself! I doubt anyone else thinks your hair looks anything other than great besides yourself.
Now, as for trimming, I would only consider trimming a tiny bit off the back at the most. This would probably just make the curls tighter there and make your hair appear to be nearly the same length as the front in the back, although the back would still have more length actually; the effective length would be shorter.
Either way, its a close call, if there are no split ends, I would be tempted to leave well-enough alone. Just because your hair doesnt appear to be getting longer does not make it less pleasing to look at and have.
Good luck and vi ses senare, Bragi
Thanks for the comments, I'll try some of your suggestions about the hair, and see what comes of it!
I think that you are making progress. I would suggest that you visit a good salon and tell them your goals and then use the best hair care products that you can afford. I think that a lot of your volume is locked up in your curls, which BTW look great!
Jeffrey.
Thanks for the comment! I'm not sure I want to entrust my hair to a salon... Last I went, they butchered it.
If I do get anything cut, it'll be a trim again, nothing really drastic I think.
I may have to look at new products.
I notice your hair looks a little frizzy, did you use any color treatments or cone shampoos?
Now that you mention it, my deep conditioner is for coloured hair. I bought it by mistake (hadn't noticed it was for coloured hair.
But it doesn't really bother me.
Hey Stefan, your hair looks good juat the way it is. I see you have very fine and curly hair. Hair of your type tends to be very fragile and will break easily. Have you ever checked the diameter of your hair strands. They may be as fine as 50 or 60 microns.
Now for a quick analysis to try to solve your problem.
Are most of your shed strands complete with a little bulb at the end or are they broken hairs? If the majority of them are broken, then you are not reaching maximum length due to breakage. If most of them are complete, then you have a short growth cycle.
Absalom
Thanks!
I've never check the diameter, and have no idea how to do it, but it is *very* fine.
Most of them have the bulb... I'm thinking, might it be thin at the end cause when I got it trimmed my hair was wet, and so each hair curls up differently?
Very fine hair is usually in the 50 micron range. The best method is to use a microscope with a measuring reticle. This is the method that I use.
This is very likely, since you said some of the hairs will curl up more than others. Even so, your hair looks good just like it is. It would probably be best just to let the other hairs that were over trimmed catch up. In due time, they should catch up.
Absalom
Hi
Mesmerized
Outstanding hair in fantastic condition what else can i say :-)
Thanks a lot :)
I have to admit, when i opened this thread i did think you had a trim, it has seemed longer and fuller in months gone by.
However, it does look great and if it were me I would not cut it if it is healthy.
Regards, Dave
I did have a trim in january I think it was...
Alright, thanks for the comment, I have something to think about :)
